Hows everyone's kids getting on with their exams / studying?

DDs first Higher exam is D&M I think. She's been busy working on past papers but feels fairly confident. She is least confident about Chemistry.

I have 2 doing them this year, lucky me.

Eldest is in s6 (so just finished school technically) and has 2 crash highers and 2 advanced highers. However he’s sitting with 5 uni offers, mainly unconditional as he got 5 As last year and the one that’s conditional only needs a B in one of the AH which he should get easily. First one is physics on Thursday.

Youngest is a different kettle of fish he has ASD and is doing 6 Nat 5s. He could either pass them all or get 6 no awards :/ first one is also physics on Thursday.

good luck everyone

Is the conditional from Glasgow uni?
My ds also has 1 conditional from them and the others are unconditional offers.

Glasgow also gave a conditional to dd asking for a B in a subject she wasn't even sitting! (AH maths)

GetDownkeith · 22/04/2024 07:51

Ds is 6th year first exam is music on Wednesday that was a crash higher.
He has photography next week on his 18th birthday. He has informed us we can sing happy birthday and do cake on the day but apart from that he doesn't want to hear about it. He's got some more important (to him) exams after this 2. He needs 1 B this year to get into his first choice uni/course. I am definitely way more stressed than him this year.

Yes it is. It’s for an MSci and the blurb on their website says offers are usually made at 6 As after s6 and a B at AH counts as an A. He should get it easily so I’m not worried, not that he’s even decided whether he’s accepting that one. Seems to be a bit of a Glasgow Uni thing, presumably so they actually do some work!

I'm sure schools have drilled this into candidates already but a few things we were told in the invigilators' meeting which catch them out each year....

Blue or black pen ONLY, not pencil, not gel pens, no fancy colours.

The date they write on the script is their DOB not the date of the exam.

They need to know their SQA number and write it on any extra bits of paper, including any leading zeros.

Good luck to all candidates. I have my first shift for Nat 5 physics on Thursday afternoon.

Higher PE today. I'm terrified

Good luck to whoever is sitting it.
My understanding is that Higher is a fair jump up from Nat 5, especially with there not being an exam for Nat 5.

Higher PE here today but it seems to be the one he’s most relaxed about. I think going in with fairly solid one-off performance grades makes it a bit more comfortable. Physics on Thursday will be more worrying here😬

Thanks, though that didn't help!! 😂

Sorry, I read it back and now see it doesn't sound great! In some cases though, a bigger challenge can actually lead to more success? Maybe I am digging. Sorry. Hope all goes ok.

Cluelessaf · 22/04/2024 13:11

No worries! I'm kind of resigned to him failing, although at least there is the performance element too.

OwlMother · 22/04/2024 13:24

Ds has AH French in Friday. Probably the least secure of his three but he seems comfortable with it. His uni offer is conditional but still should be manageable even if he has a bit of a wobble. Just need to hope there isn't a total collapse.

Glasgowgin · 22/04/2024 16:12

Hope PE went ok. Mine thought it was a bit of an odd paper!

LadyDanburysHat · 22/04/2024 16:14

Mine thought his PE paper was okay, although the last question threw him a bit. He told me that his PE teachers said the average mark in the Higher PE across Scotland is 7/50. Having seen past papers I can see why. They are the strangest questions.

DD is doing Higher Geography today. We had our annual pre exam melt down last night so hopefully now she has got it out of her system today will go well. Her uni place isn't conditional on exam results thankfully but she doesn't want to fail it

I don't suppose you know what equipment they are supposed to take, do you? I saw another school post that they need a pen, pencil, ruler and rubber but my child's school said only a pen! She is now panicking! Though will take the ruler and pencil just in case.

Hapagirl48 · 23/04/2024 08:09

Good luck geographers! DD’s first exam today (Nat 5). She’s been so ill but she’s worked really hard so hopefully missing last week won’t make much difference. She’s worried about distracting others with her coughing 😢

Misthios · 23/04/2024 08:20

The invigilators' pack says for Nat 5 geography "candidates should have access to a ruler".

Pencil and rubber not needed as they are not allowed to write in pencil has to be pen. For ADv H geography they are allowed "a magnifying glass, string and reusable adhesive"?

Thanks - my child is doing Higher. On the school post I saw it said the pencil is for writing on the OS Map.

Misthios · 23/04/2024 08:32

Yes I can see the logic in that - the maps can then be reused by school!! Pen only on answer sheets, they are reminded about this before every exam.

motheronthedancefloor · 23/04/2024 17:40

DDs BF was pleased with the H Geography paper so that's good news as they have had teacher changes this year.

Anyone got DC doing higher Music this morning. My DS is pretty chilled about it, the teacher spends a lot of time on past papers and he is consistently getting enough for an A in papers. Not so confident on his composing, but playing went well.

YouBelongWithMe · 24/04/2024 19:56

H physics tomorrow!! He's done enough work so we just have to see how it goes. He's consistently getting Bs in past papers, which he'd be delighted with.

Glasgowgin · 24/04/2024 20:35

H physics here tomorrow too. Be super glad when this one's over, then a bit of a break until English. Best of luck to everyone tomorrow!

Threeboysadogacatandakitten · 25/04/2024 02:33

Ds3 did his advanced Higher music today.he said it was all multiple choice and he hasn’t got a clue how he got on!
