Hows everyone's kids getting on with their exams / studying?

DDs first Higher exam is D&M I think. She's been busy working on past papers but feels fairly confident. She is least confident about Chemistry.

I've seen the paper, it looks pretty fair. Think the Men Should Weep 10m was a toughie but the first 10m were decent.

A couple of good Q's for Gatsby 👍

My son did Othello and answered on persuasion instead of betrayal 😬😬😬 oh well, it's done now

RUAE was a really fair paper. No trick questions, nothing that should spook or trip them up.

if DD’s school had done men should weep she would have done great. Her uncle was in it at the local theatre !

I don't think Granny had featured at all in their studies of Men Should Weep!

It also makes me laugh that one of the SQA set texts is the Cone Gatherers, which I did for H English in 1989. Also two of the poems (Burns, can't remember the other one) were not in English but in "scots", strikes me that one one hand the SNP are trying to position Scots as a whole different and separate language, just like Gaelic or French, yet lumping in the Scots texts with the English exams. Surely if it's that different, it should be a whole other exam?

Yes, it was Tam O’Shanter. My son said it was really tough. English is his strongest subject too. In his school, each set does different poems, so some of his year group found their poem ok, but many in his class were leaving feeling very deflated.

Higher RMPS tomorrow, then its Higher History and Higher Chemistry

does anyone know if the English papers are online yet anywhere?

I recognised Tam O'Shanter, I wouldn't have a clue about analysing it or writing an essay on it though!! It was the bit where Tam is watching the witches and warlocks in the church and ends with "Weel done Cutty Sark and in an instant all was dark" or something like that.

I was talking about the paper to DS who did Nat 5 English, and some of the texts in the Higher paper - one about Mrs Tilsher's class - he did for Nat 5. I wonder if it might make a reappearance next year in Higher.

YouBelongWithMe · 09/05/2024 20:41

It's unlikely they'll repeat the same poem set for N5 the year later at H, for exactly the reason you've mentioned. It'll be one of the other five. (I was surprised it was In Mrs Tilscher's Class, I would have thought Valentine or War Photographer.

motheronthedancefloor · 10/05/2024 16:39

DD felt the sikism part of Higher RMPS was hard today.

How's everyone feeling about Maths on Monday?

My son is doing a few hours a day. Maths feels quite comfortable - he's hoping for a solid B but I think there's a glimmer of hope he'll pull an A out the bag. He says he's leaving vectors until Sunday because regardless of how much he goes over them, they only stay in his head for 24h 🤣 he's working tomorrow but I made him take Sunday off so he can revise.

Threeboysadogacatandakitten · 11/05/2024 02:20

Ds feels he has struggled a bit with maths this year. He was revising at a friend’s house last night and in Costa today. Apparently revising in your bedroom, on your own, is not the way to do it. I suppose it worked for him last year so I’m keeping out of it completely.

Igneococcus · 11/05/2024 07:33

Math is the one subject ds is struggling with somewhat. I'll be waiting anxiously for updates on Monday. I just hope the exam doesn't have some weird questions like last year's Nat5 grandfather clock one.

Last year's Nat 5 Maths was a bit odd indeed! I'm kind of glad DS does not need H Maths tbh! Good luck to everyone sitting it!

My son is doing AH maths on Monday and also struggling with vectors as it’s only just been brought back into the curriculum since Covid.

My youngest is doing N5 apps and seems to be quite confident

Good luck to them both!

We've a nice break now as next one is Higher History on Tues 21st - DD giving herself a break for the weekend. Sending best of luck to all the Maths peeps for next week!

weebarra · 11/05/2024 10:03

That's a nice break!
DS1 has Human Biology and Politics on consecutive days next week, his worst subjects, before History.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 11/05/2024 10:30

DC has had fairly well spaced out exams (hopefully only spaced out in terms of dates and in no other way spaced out!), but in some ways that's a challenge keeping up motivation too. It is quite hard when you have two (or more) challenging ones near each other too, of course! So glad my exam days are over!

theferry · 11/05/2024 10:47

Thankfully we’ve had/will have 5 days between each exam. Really worried about History on 21st. DD has not done enough revision and there’s so much to cover. She’s lucky that I’m a historian 😀

Sturmundcalm · 11/05/2024 11:20

English and RMPS for DS now done. He found English papers ok but think that was partly because he could do children of men rather than having to swap to do the crucible, and he seemed to find the poetry ok too. RMPS paper 2 he was happy with but he ended up not answering (🫣) one of the 10 mark questions in paper 1 as he just didn't get it...

Maths on Monday. Fingers crossed, it's never been his strongest subject but he has always done ok.

Oof, tough to have your hardest subjects on consecutive days - sending hope that it goes better than feared.

Misthios · 11/05/2024 14:42

I'm invigilating H Maths on Monday, no hope of even knowing whether the paper is fair, middling or tricky as maths is most definitely not my thing! Ditto H Biology on Wednesday.

Vettrianofan · 12/05/2024 07:05

We agreed with DS before study leave began that he can have one study free day each week to meet a friend/game with friends on the PC for his emotionalwellbeing. This is his day off today but back to studying tomorrow and Tuesday before Biology exam on Wednesday. He spent most of yesterday afternoon revising. He says he feels okay about the approaching exam. He was in for supported study on Friday and got some revision papers marked. Mostly correct and knew where he went wrong with the questions he got a bit lost with.

Good luck for others next week. We are almost there!

I am sure your DD will do great with your input, hope it all goes brilliantly for her next week💪
