And I'm quite glad. My mental health was shot to pieces by the first one.

@Venetiaparties

That's just simply not true. No matter how many cutesy little smilies you put.

Also at no point did I peddle rejoining the EU. I simply stated it was a material difference to the lies that were being peddled at time of referendum. It is now a moot point as scotland is no longer a member of the EU thanks to English racists.

We were at the time of the Scottish referendum.

Are you blind as to what is happening to the current and future generations in the Uk or are you just so keen to gloss over this with your passion for the union flag?

Hardship, poverty, racism, cronyism, tax loopholes, foodbanks, hatred of immigration and refugees, laughing stock on world stage, liars in power & more abuse of power to come. The UK is two steps away from a fascist regime.
And with a Tory donor as chief of the BBC. One of those steps hangs in the balance.

Bloody terrifying for anyone decent & progressive and passionate about democracy.

All that and more you wave away with your staunch support for the union flag.
Vile.

Laughing stock is winding people up on FaceBook rather than going with a well-considered legal ruling. And actually governing well without deflection as only course of action.

Anyone outraged at the GRA is ignorant of what feminism is.

It's that simple. Utter stupidity at its most glaringly obvious.

We must all be stupid then! Oh, to be as enlightened as you are beachcitygirl!

The more you call us stupid, the more you say we’re wrong, the more we know we’re right.

dementedma · 23/11/2022 13:50

And what will you do for Defence when/if you are independent? Do you think an army, navy and airforce will just spring up overnight? Scotland will be wide open to anyone who would like a handy base in the North Sea. And you call other people stupid???

JoonT · 23/11/2022 13:52

The Scottish nationalists will be secretly pleased. They can present this as the horrible, arrogant English denying them their freedom. The SNP thrive on hatred. I know their supporters deny it, but it’s true. The more hatred they can stir up towards the English, the more support they win. This will be a gift.

Venetiaparties · 23/11/2022 13:54

What worries me more than people screaming bile like beach is the capacity for the English to continue to put up with this.

At some point, given the strain of this and the endless racism directed at us - people are going to snap and say they have really had enough.

It is galling enough that Scotland have so many benefits and perks that we don't have - but pay for - and indeed the sheer costs involved. There comes a point when goodwill will finally run out for this campaign of hate and division.

England tend to still champion the Scottish, think well of them and support staying together despite it mostly being one way these days. But for how much longer with people, potentially a great number of people like Beach whom are consumed with so much hate? Who would ever put up with such abuse indefinitely?
Scotland is becoming so toxic and it is the last thing anyone wants to see.

Riapia · 23/11/2022 13:56

Poor little Nikki you’re all being very mean.
‘She’s standing in the playground.
Her elastic has snapped.
Her knickers are round her ankles and you’re all mocking her.
Show a little empathy, bless her.
😂😂

Sure like the BNP thrive on hate. But I still think it’s a blow for them.

I would feel deflated if it was a yes, I’m glad it’s a no. If it had been a yes they’d be celebrating. Instead it’s riling people up as the alternative.

Venetiaparties · 23/11/2022 14:00

I hope the SNP will soon be exposed clearly to the world for the racists they are, along the lines of the BNP they will be consigned to political wilderness. The SNP is packed full of disruptive racists, feeding on hate and division - it is fast becoming a one dimensional hate party. I wish people could see them for what they are.
They are achieving precisely nothing but more of the same.

username8888 · 23/11/2022 14:05

I've a few Scottish friends who are all madly pro independence. So I daren't ask them.

SNP is the Independence Party and they are voted in on this ticket with big majorities. So how come in the last referendum and now so many other Scots vote against independence?. Seems a bit counter intuitive.

how would you feel about a parliament made up of 50% men and 50% transwomen? Is that equality for women? Do you feel that the 51% of the population who have the body type that gestates and gives birth to the children of our species would have their needs adequately represented in such a situation?

I starting to wonder if beachcitygirl is Karen Adam or Maggie Chapman...😂certainly gives the impression of being the same type of zealot.

Scottishskifun · 23/11/2022 14:28

@beachcitygirl you go on about racism from the ruk however see no irony in that given some of the views of a percentage of the independent movement. The ones who have held rallies with SNP ministers present calling for english people to be driven out.
On more then one occasion I have been subject to abuse simply because of where I am from despite living in Scotland for more then a decade.

Last council elections I ended up calling the local SNP office because I was told to go home back across the border by one of their members (not the person running).

It's farcical to think that independent Scotland is any better certainly not the experiences I have witnessed my area doesn't even like people from the central belt buying a house here!

That is utterly disgusting and I'm so so sorry that happened to you. Vile. There are horrible people everywhere.
No excuse for that type of behaviour. I have zero tolerance for that. Flowers

TalbotAMan · 23/11/2022 14:39

TartanGirl1 · 23/11/2022 11:31

So not a union of equals then... gotcha!

As England, Wales and Northern Ireland haven't been allowed even one referendum on whether they wish to remain in a union with Scotland, no it isn't.

Some animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.

Steve8686 · 23/11/2022 14:46

The UK has never been a union of equals or a union of unequals.. It's a single country, not a federation.

As stated in the Acts of Union - "United into One Kingdom by the Name of Great Britain"

And yet here is an example of exactly that sentiment just in the last page from you beachcitygirl

"Scotland were dragged out of the EU by knuckle grazing engerland Britnat racists, certain and fascist freaks like Farage and his supporters.

Wales, Ireland & Scotland subjected to the shit of England's bigger land size and huge colonial ego continually. Again & Again & Again"

None of this is okay
It is hate speech

However you feel, you could just take the contempt and hate out of it as a starting point.

caroleanboneparte · 23/11/2022 11:18

I've never understood why there's a level of vitriol on nationalist/ unionist threads that I never ever see on any other topic on Mumsnet.

There are other political debates (Tory/Labour, Brexit, immigration, anti semitism, abortion, euthanasia etc) that people feel just as strongly about but there's never the derogatory language used against the opposing side that you get in these debates.

Why?

To be fair, Mumsnet is very pro union, and most of the posts on this thread seem to be people saying they are relieved at the ruling and in favour of the union. So the vitriol is mostly coming from that direction rather than the independence supporters (though not solely). You can state otherwise all you want, but it's very obvious.

I'm pro independence, but can admit there are some awful people in the independence movement. They don't speak for me and I'm ashamed that they're associated with things I support. It looks like unionists cannot recognise this from their own side and it astounds me. Do you really think that unionists are innocent in all of this? That they never stir up hatred? That they never play nasty, divisive games?

I hate to quote people on this stuff, but I'm genuinely interested to know if you disagree with me.

People saying they are relieved re ruling is not vitriol. Although I get the need to downplay the hate from pro SNP as the same.

goldenshoe · 23/11/2022 15:19

@MarshaBradyo
I'm not saying that if you're posting about feeling relieved at the result of the ruling it's vitriolic, that's completely fair. But there is plenty of vitriol on this thread as a whole.

goldenshoe · 23/11/2022 15:23

I also realise that the post I quoted in my original post wasn't necessarily pointing fingers at anyone either, and I apologise for the misunderstanding @caroleanboneparte I totally agree with what you said!

I find the vitriol for anyone not unionist is so strong on Mumsnet. Worse than even the cesspool that is Twitter.

Scottishskifun · 23/11/2022 15:32

@goldenshoe there is definitely it in the union side as well but the concept that only with a independent Scotland would this go really got my goat as its not been my experience with a minority of independence supporters I have unfortunately had vitriol from. I also now always report it to the local SNP office if they are wearing a SNP badge as they should be investigating and removing members for it if they have membership.
