I'm in the car reading a few threads where folks are fed up with the misery and fighting so thought I'd start a new thread. Not for politics or covid or fighting , just general stuff 🙂

I've had a nice day, off work on hols so we took a wee drive down to Peebles and had lunch, bought a few pies from lovely butcher and now heading home.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 23/11/2021 19:14

I have peace. The boys are playing FIFA and DD is getting to an age where she'd rather stick pins in her eyes than sit with me all evening (I thought 11 was too early for that but apparently not 😕)

Scottishskifun · 23/11/2021 19:38

I'm getting ready for bake off final.... Learnt my lesson and saved pud for when it's on so I don't then get annoyed I don't have cake or biscuits 😂

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 23/11/2021 20:06

I totally can't call it! I like Chrystelle but suspect Giuseppe will do it.

ElephantOfRisk · 23/11/2021 20:26

I forgot about bake off. Might wait until it's finished and watch on catch up. I ended up both cooking AND clearing up - Mr usually clears up but I thought I'd treat him since it was his birthday. Duck was lovely, cake still intact, Fizzy wine downed and he now has even more whisky, but he's not opened any of it yet. He won't now as he's driving tomorrow.

I've just started watching Strike. The casting of Strike and Robin is perfect.

ssd · 23/11/2021 21:13

I was watching saving lives at sea, I'm never going near it again Shock too unpredictable...

Scottishskifun · 23/11/2021 21:21

@ssd I would always encourage everyone to be able to read the waves and know what a rip looks like from the beach! I've actually lost count of the number of times I stopped families or 10+ aged children swimming straight into one off a beach because they thought that looked like the calm bit when I have been surfing or paddle boarding.

We have quite a few friends in the RNLI some of which have appeared on the show they are brilliant at what they do for free week in week out!

GrouchyKiwi · 23/11/2021 21:24

Definitely, Scottishskifun. It's a regular informational campaign in NZ because it's so important.

GrouchyKiwi · 23/11/2021 21:26

Also: Old Speckled Hen might be my favourite beer, though Fraoch is pretty wonderful too.

(When did I become such a lightweight that one bottle of beer makes me feel a bit tipsy? Yet another thing to thank the children for.)

ssd · 23/11/2021 21:26

We bought a kayak this year and i read about rip tides on mn. Scary things!!!

ssd · 23/11/2021 21:29

You watching celebrity @WouldBeGood

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 23/11/2021 21:46

We live next to the sea and so many people I know have bought paddle boards and kayaks in the last 18 months, but I don't think I'd ever feel comfortable or knowledgeable enough to keep us all properly safe.

prettybird · 23/11/2021 22:07

I remember learning about rip tides in the two years I lived in NZ as a teenager in the 70s. We were in New Plymouth and the beaches there were notorious for them. In fact my db got caught in one but still insists he wasn't Wink and was brought back in by the lifeguards.

The main bit I remember is not to fight the riptide if you get caught in it: to let it take you out until it "releases" eventually

Scottishskifun · 23/11/2021 22:11

@BlameItOnTheBlackStar I would always recommend going out with a professional to start with then looking at a course especially on how to read conditions and how to self rescue.

Some of it is basics like having the correct safety equipment and a phone in a waterproof pouch but you will be amazed at how few people do even the basics!

DH and I are comfortable with water safety to take DS out in calm conditions but we have years of experience and many water safety courses done.

ssd · 23/11/2021 22:18

I didn't know you could do water safety courses @Scottishskifun. Is that through the RNLI? I'd definitely do this.

Scottishskifun · 23/11/2021 22:25

Not through the RNLI generally through private instructors or via the particular sport charity/national body Web page who often advertise courses. Best advice would be find a local group for the particular activity and build from there they often organise courses internally too 😊
ssd · 23/11/2021 22:49

I'll look this out, thanks

WouldBeGood · 24/11/2021 03:27

@ssd no celeb for me: I was in bed unaccustomedly early, just knackered! But now awake 🙄

ssd · 24/11/2021 09:53

Oh no, what a pain!! Hope you got back to sleep. I'm up twice a night for the loo, murder getting old

WouldBeGood · 24/11/2021 16:28

Thanks @ssd. I’ve been to gym and dog walk - beautiful day here. Still tired, but so are DD and DS. Guess it might be the time of year. Off for my booster soon.

Scottishskifun · 24/11/2021 16:54

Urghhh we have yet another nursery cold feel so rubbish (tests negative) think I'm going to have to cancel the dentist as a result which has taken 5 months to get a appointment sorted 😬

WouldBeGood · 24/11/2021 17:25

They’re just jagging everyone in full public view, no curtains or screens 😱

On the plus side there are soldiers

This was our local vaccination centre throughout with one private bit set up incase people fainted
GrouchyKiwi · 24/11/2021 17:33

Oh no. Feel better soon Scottishskifun.

I am trying to find a good 6ft Christmas tree (we're going for fake because we keep ruining real ones), and the thickest, fluffiest gold tinsel not-much money can buy. Any suggestions?

My sister sent me a care package from NZ that arrived today. Some of the packets of special crisps had burst open so I had to eat them right away. What a trial. She also sent some Birds of NZ-themed Christmas decorations, which I love beyond all things.
