@ssd

I'll tell him again🤞
After what he's paid out, tell him it's just about getting his money worth. That might appeal to him.
MrsRockAndRoll · 15/09/2021 06:07

@sartorius

It just doesn't make any sense. My DC1 has moved into halls of residence. They're having a full freshers social programme there, in and out each other's flats, nightclubs, pubs. The only restriction in halls is masks in public places. She's having great time so far but next week she will go into university with social distancing. And 2/3 of her week will be online from her bedroom 🤷🏼‍♀️
@sartorius it makes zero sense
ssd · 15/09/2021 08:44

@ElephantOfRisk, good idea

WouldBeGood · 15/09/2021 11:57

Humza Useless now warning people to think carefully before calling ambulances.

With him and Swinney you could just rail 24/7

Which will only affect the wrong people as people that care won't call ambulances anyway, and people that don't care don't listen to public health messages anyway!

WouldBeGood · 15/09/2021 12:19

Good point @mapleleavesreturn. What a bloody awful health Secretary he is

Does anyone know if you can get antibody tests for teenagers?

Precisely - I really don't think that the people who call ambulances at the drop of a hat will think "hmmm - better not do that, then" whereas anyone who DOES actually need an ambulance could be put off, thinking they don't want to make a fuss/ add to the backlog. Which may stop them getting the help they need quickly enough. If people need an ambulance they need an ambulance . It's not their fault there aren't enough ambulances and the service has to prioritise who they send them out to urgently, and who "can" wait.

What a tosser.

mapleleavesreturn · 15/09/2021 12:58

So much of the recent public health messaging has been poorly targeted, constantly checked by people that worry and follow rules and not reaching other core groups.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 15/09/2021 13:07

Nice of Humza to take time from persecuting small business owners and address the massive pressure on the SNHS, but yes, all this latest intervention will do is put off people who need help and this cause more unavoidable deaths. Ironically in that same interview I think he talks about people putting off getting help and thus presenting at a more advanced stage being one of the causes of the current pressures!

I agree the communications strategy looks like it comes from inside a bubble where everyone is scared of COVID and wants ‘caution’. How else do you explain the nonsense that is University policy, unless it is to appear cautious? They always seem really shocked to hear that maybe lots of people are happy to accept the risks and want to get on with life!

Having a little rail today that the UK’s plan B, to be used only as an absolute last resort over the winter if hospitals become overwhelmed and vaccines don’t contain everything, is everyday life right now in Scotland.

ssd · 15/09/2021 13:13

@WouldBeGood, i looked online, bupa do them for 65 quid, theres probably more choices, worth a look.

mibbelucieachwell · 15/09/2021 13:20

Government ministers should be deeply ashamed of the ambulance situation. Isn't the job of government to protect its citizens? This is the government that makes its healthcare professionals do diversity training where they're told which words to use. Chestfeeding anyone? How nasty to try to make people feel guilty about using our health service.

A few years ago a GP I know fell on ice on a pavement. She waited more than 2 hours on the ice for an ambulance. The ambulance service was crazy busy responding to lots of falls on the ice, which hadn't been gritted. Nothing to do with covid HY.

ElephantOfRisk · 15/09/2021 13:24

It's also a result of the ambulance service having been subject to constant cuts and poor management. For years it's been run with staff doing more or less constant overtime. Now there is no way to add in overtime to help as staff are already working over their hours. It's not covid, but huge staff absences now as well for injuries and stress due to overwork. Putting more stress on the rest who then get injuries and/or can't cope anymore.

Staff with blue light training pulled in to support even if they passed that years ago and haven't ever used it/had it refreshed.

Red Cross now at QE hospital in Glasgow to help feed and water patients, relatives and staff stuck waiting in ambulances or corridors. It's like a third world country.

ResilienceWanker · 15/09/2021 13:41

Indeed. It sounds like once again the "blame" is being put on all of us for not thinking properly, and inconveniently getting ill or wanting routine care, when in reality the problem is years of mismanagement and costcutting. Of the SAS and whole NHS of course (if one of the issues is there aren't beds to "offload" patients to in hospital - or staff to do it). Same as the whole "do you really need a GP appointment? there's a pandemic on you know", "don't go to hospital with covid unless you're blue" and "dentist? you don't need to see a dentist unless your head is exploding with toothache" messaging.

ElephantOfRisk · 15/09/2021 13:47

My GP website now you can apply for a Fit/sick note online. Although i'm now back at work, i'd neglected to consider that on my phased return, i only get paid for the hours I'm working so I still need a note to cover that period so I can get sick pay to cover the other hours. So, I went on to the website and filled in the info on friday but i noted that it doesn't actually say what happens after filling it in. No idea how long it takes, do they call to say it's ready, email maybe? or is it just posted out? I added a bit at the end of the box you complete to ask them to let me know but still haven't heard. No doubt HR will start getting a bit upset shortly but I'm trying to avoid calling since I presume that's why they have a form, to cut down on calls....

titsintiers · 15/09/2021 13:49

How are you getting on back at work @ElephantOfRisk?

ElephantOfRisk · 15/09/2021 13:55

Thanks for asking @titsintiers. I've been doing 3 hours a day since last Thursday. I've actually had access to systems on my laptop for about 2 hours out of all that time. I've spent more time waiting to get through to IT, speaking to IT, waiting on IT to call back than anything else so far. So not really done any work yet and haven't been able to progress getting my access on all the other stuff I need yet until I can get logged on.

Bit of a nightmare.

Otherwise I'm okay, sleep regressed a bit and having an upset stomach again every morning but not been overly anxious otherwise. upping hours to 20 next week. I might start using holidays to work shorter weeks after that.

titsintiers · 15/09/2021 14:44

You should definitely use the holidays to help when needed.

I hope the sleep and stomach issues get better over the next few weeks, I'm sure they will.

Calmdown14 · 15/09/2021 18:06

Government guidance for unis has stuck them in an absolute no win situation.
If they ignore social distancing unions will be up in arms but really staff aren't happy either way because delivering things multiple times and doing online versions massively adds to their workload.
And students aren't happy because it makes no sense that they can go to nightclubs etc.
Always thought the English timing of opening nightclubs was an attempt to protect unis by getting most of them jabbed and infected during the summer

Groovee · 15/09/2021 18:46

Ds was due to be physically in college tomorrow. We were up in Dundee today dropping dd's stuff off to her. We had nipped to Tesco and he got an email saying they are now online. No explanation why.

However it was good to pop up to Dundee and go out for food etc.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 15/09/2021 19:21

Where did you go for food @Groovee ?

ResilienceWanker · 15/09/2021 20:24

I'm glad you're doing OK elephant, despite IT issues. Though, yes, as tits suggests, take care and use whatever means you have to not overdo it! Hope the sleep and tummy sort themselves out. And the fit note, of course...

That is really weird groovee. I wonder if it is a consequence of NSs thing yesterday, meaning they're having to change procedures last minute or something. What a palaver.

calmdown - totally! Though to be honest, it does seem the union is out on the limb a bit on this. It seems many, if not most staff are keen to get back to f2f - if just to calm down their workload a bit! But ucu is still going on about everyone being at risk, and needing to have as much as possible online when a couple of years ago they were outraged at the concept of recording lectures and said no staff should be made to do them if they didn't want to. DH is super-unionised, always up for a good picket line with a placard and megaphone (well, not really, but he does like some Socialist chanting), but even he's really going off them and their stance.

rookiemere · 15/09/2021 20:37

@ElephantOfRisk glad to hear you're back at work and surviving.

ElephantOfRisk · 15/09/2021 21:13

thank you for the good wishes folks, I'm hoping to return to being a fully functioning member of society soon. I'm definitely going to take it as easy as possible, I can't go back to where I was. With any luck i'll get made redundant or be able to retire a bit early in a couple of years and maybe pick up some less stressful work if required. I've been working full time for over 38 years with less than a year in total off for maternity leave. This period of sick leave is as long as my longest mat leave (5 and a half months) and yet I still have 12 years before state pension kicks in. If I work until that it will be 50 years!
