Ds's uni mostly online again. Same as last year. I dont mind, dont want him bringing covid back, am trying to avoid it as long as possible. Other ds did a masters last yr, over 6k to do it in his room

WouldBeGood · 13/09/2021 12:18

@KingsleyShacklebolt that’s truly shite

The Johnson government has stepped away from this self ID stuff. So it’s better there, in that regard.

I think, in general, there has been more f2f contact in English Unis throughout though nothing anywhere near normal. DSs haven't had any at all since March 2020.

DS1 (Strathclyde) has an on-line induction to his 4th year today also. He might have a bit of an idea how much contact he is getting. Normally he'd have lectures, tutorials and labs. I think the expectation is that the latter two should be face to face but I'm sure we'll find out soon. He got another commendation for last year so that's 3 in a row so I guess it's not affecting his academics but he needs to get out the house!

DS2 Aberdeen is expecting turorials f2f and lectures on-line but has nothing confirmed yet (as far as I know). His GF did have an hour a week face to face last year which is a lot better than some.

ssd · 13/09/2021 12:28

Congrats to your ds1 @ElephantOfRisk, fantastic

ElephantOfRisk · 13/09/2021 12:48

Thank you @ssd, he didn't think to mention it...

It sounds like a lot of our DC have managed to get on with things despite the restrictions they've faced. It's not really what they should be doing though and I hope they get a bit better Uni experience this year. Doing a masters with no time spent in Uni must have been so hard (and expensive!). I hope he gets the benefit with increased work opportunities.

user1487194234 · 13/09/2021 13:10

If the students are in Uni accommodation at least they get part of the uni experience get to meet people etc.Its much worse for the students who are at home

ElephantOfRisk · 13/09/2021 13:15

Agree, DS1 is at home and DS2 is living away but after leaving early in March 2020 and coming home for 6 months, he went back and was sharing with his girlfriend in halls, just the two of them in a 3 bed flat and now in a private flat for this year but at least they can get out and about. They've had some big tests on their relationship. Not being able to see each other for months during first lock down and then seeing no-one but each other for months!

Big dilemma for parents of young boys though

runningpink · 13/09/2021 14:48

I don’t have any kids, so I’m glad I don’t have this decision to make.

Thanks so much! That's really useful. It totally makes sense that even though a GRC isn't essential for lots of self ID related things, if it's easier and cheaper to get, more people will apply for one, and it will become impossible to distinguish genuine from malicious. And if a birth certificate alone isn't a "true" record of sex - how can service providers tell if someone is eligible for an exemption or not?! Aaaaargh.

ResilienceWanker · 13/09/2021 14:55

As well as the jabs for 12-15s apparently
The prime minister is also about to announce plans to get rid of coronavirus powers the government no longer needs - including the legal authority to shut down schools and some businesses.
Except for viewers in Scotland, where the SG is still trying to get the power to retain these indefinitely...

Explosivefarts · 13/09/2021 14:57

@ssd

Big dilemma for parents of young boys though
We won’t be getting it for our sons . I’ve been doing research snd it’s not worth the risk for us .
Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 13/09/2021 15:00

I understand the vaccinating kids thing was very marginal, but I’m not entirely comfortable with it going ahead ‘to minimise disruption to their education’. The disruption that is in place mainly because of societal restrictions rather than children actually being ill in any significant way. Drop the restrictions and the problem pretty much goes away! Since when do we recommend vaccines to solve non-medical problems?? Maybe I’m going mad, but it feels like some serious political pressure has been applied here.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 13/09/2021 15:01

This isn't the first thing I've read or seen that suggests the vaccine passports isn't really cut and dried in England.

Agree @Y0uCann0tBeSer10us plus an 8 week roll out takes us through to end oct by which time surely it's been all round school.

What kind of improvement in transmission is going to come from one jab? They'll have to be clearer about the benefits.

Explosivefarts · 13/09/2021 15:49

All along this pandemic we have heard how they are only following advice from the JCVI until now . They decide to overrule as they don’t like what they had to day

listentomydeclaration · 13/09/2021 16:20

The benefits are definitely to education - no more masks in class, no more disruption from self isolating, no more crappy remote learning, no more missed exams and so on.

Personally I don't see how any parent can object (unless their child was medically exempt from the vaccine).

listentomydeclaration · 13/09/2021 16:22

ha! Gregor whatshisname was clearly telt to put a saltire on the screen beside him Hmm
