Starting this thread for those of us who are done. I don’t want to just rail or fight about it with those who still believe that government messaging is in our best interest. Enough is enough.

Hi everyone, am in England at the moment and it feels surprisingly normal. People slowly ditching the masks and no one making a fuss about it. Not been asked to use sanitiser once. It has been really good for my mental health to be away from the crazy restrictions .... DS is having a ball as he doesn't have to wear one at all here. We are all enjoying the comparative freedom

RaraRachael · 17/07/2021 13:13

I'm going to England in a couple of weeks so really looking forward to a bit of freedom. Masks make me feel I'll and continual hand sanitising affects my skin.

Meanwhile in Scotland we can look forward to masks and distancing until at least Christmas Angry

NotSoLongGoodbye · 17/07/2021 13:46

@RaraRachael
enjoy! I hadn't realised until I got here how much all the doom and gloom had all been getting me down. I accidentally pulled my mask down in Sainsburys before i exited the shop and no one batted an eye or shouted or veered away from me.

WouldBeGood · 17/07/2021 13:53

I might risk England then, after my shite Scottish holidays.

NotSoLongGoodbye · 17/07/2021 17:10

@WouldBeGood
Sorry to hear your holidays were rubbish.

WouldBeGood · 18/07/2021 12:51

Hope everyone is preordering Devi’s book on the pandemic, as promoted by NS!!

Scottishskifun · 18/07/2021 15:25

We are on our way back from one of our trips to England. Had a absolute blast it definitely feels more normal in people don't make a fuss or stare about masks or making ridiculously large walking sweeps it just felt a lot more chilled.

Our friends had a few concerns but then said they would do what they felt comfortable with which I completely agree with!

Definitely recommend a trip if wanting to escape dictatorship!

ResilienceWanker · 18/07/2021 17:34

I confess I have been googling hotels for a night in Newcastle or Carlisle before the end of the holidays... Blush Just for a taste of being able to browse in shops or potter round a gallery or something and actually enjoying it. I could take Devis book to read in a coffee shop while there...

WouldBeGood · 18/07/2021 17:46

@ResilienceWanker 🤣

I might take the book to read on the hairdresser mask free

Bumping the thread in honour of our friends and family south of Berwick, who can take back a bit of control/responsibility for themselves today. Lovely weather for it too.

I definitely felt better holidaying there, but returning to Scotland with its ‘holier than thou’ approach to lifting restrictions is impacting my mental health more than ever.
Popped along for a coffee today/freedom day, after drop off (hurrah for the holidays clubs on for our children- sent DC under 12 without a mask) and pretended, as ever, to do track and trace (I was sitting outside ffs, with nobody next to me on other tables, no I won’t isolate for that due to Mrs Miggins sitting inside and voluntarily testing this week).

Walked from toilet in cafe at weekend, back out to my car, sans mask- anyone sitting inside who wants to judge me on that, have a word with yourself as you sit inside for an hour without your mask.

Thank goodness it’s nice weather at the moment, I may just tip over otherwise.

No change, enough is enough.

"Bumping the thread in honour of our friends and family south of Berwick, who can take back a bit of control/responsibility for themselves today."

This is the key for me. From the hysterics on social media and from certain politicians you'd be forgiven for thinking that masks in England were now banned rather than 'encouraged in certain situations but no longer legally mandatory.' I suspect that most people will continue to use them in the higher risk situations (and indeed lots of travel operators and shops will continue to ask for them), but removing the legal mandate allows that gradual shift back towards people being responsible for their own safety and decisions. It's so important for mental recovery and for moving forward that people are trusted to make their own decisions again, and unless actively symptomatic the masks most of us wear don't make that huge a difference anyway.

So jealous of my family in England who are being treated like adults rather than naughty school children, and who have taken a huge step towards normality today.

Indeed! I am in Englandshire & will still wear mine most of the time at the moment as it doesn't really bother me that much. Although it depends where I am - popping in to Tesco ok. All day - perhaps not!

But it doesn't make me nervous that some people won't. And from what I've seen on my Social Media is that many will still wear them. I wouldn't be surprised if more do now than ever! I will still keep my distance from most, but that's because I like my space Grin

riverrunning · 19/07/2021 13:28

Yes my mask behaviour wouldn't vary much wherever I was in the UK, on Twitter people taking extreme stances on very little as usual.

Bytheloch · 19/07/2021 13:57

I’ve deleted the Twitter app and logged out, at least for the summer anyway, I might return in the Autumn -or if any further political scandals break/they find the missing money as there’s not so many hysterical folk and virtue signalling IRL. If they’re judging you, it tends to be internalisedGrin.

Anyone actually remember what it stands forHmm

WouldBeGood · 19/07/2021 17:57

@latissimusdorsi I don’t think anyone has ever known 😂

ResilienceWanker · 19/07/2021 18:12

The least memorable mnemonic in the history of mnemonics.

riverrunning · 19/07/2021 18:16

I joined Twitter to follow school updates but on the whole you might be right bytheloch it's upset me many more times than it's been useful.

😂 What's a bet it becomes a exam question next year?!

Glad to see they have dropped it as actually it doesn't mean much given ventilation is the biggest risk not touching a gate outside!

Bytheloch · 19/07/2021 18:43

Please don’t give them any ideas re the exam questions🤣

Hands, face, space is a much easier one for me. Although, I’m also old enough to remember 2019/early 2020 when we washed our hands without being told to by the government. Let’s hope people are as keen to continue hand washing as they are to keep germy, unwashed masks on🤷‍♀️

a "please remember to wear a mask" might be slightly more welcoming Shock

PaulaPetunia · 19/07/2021 18:48

Harsh tone in that ad.Hmm
