Scotland- Enough is enough

Starting this thread for those of us who are done. I don’t want to just rail or fight about it with those who still believe that government messaging is in our best interest. Enough is enough.

@GoldenOmber
And everyone on the original mumsnet Tiers threads have "sadly died"
They never did catch Covid as they were kept safe but managed to somehow get counted as Covid death statistic

AlphabetAerobics · 15/07/2021 11:16

I might die of sweating today - I'm not genetically cut out for such weather.

GoldenOmber · 15/07/2021 12:30

Where did the CovidSwinneyBot say that about masks today?

He was on Radio Scotland yesterday and was asked if he could still see masks being required at Christmas and said it was ‘perfectly conceivable’. Not really very committal either way.

I got a YouGov survey about restrictions on Scotland yesterday and it was a bit odd. Asked how happy I’d be to take LFTs twice a week ‘for the next 3 months’ (and then when I said er probably not that frequently, had 3 pages of ‘why not?’ options that didn’t include ‘because it’s uncomfortable to take’ which I would have thought was a big one!)

WouldBeGood · 15/07/2021 12:34

I’m not taking tests because I am not ill!!

Haudyourwheesht · 15/07/2021 13:03

I hope there was an option regarding the huge amount of feckin single use plastic being used. That's my biggest issue with them.

RaraRachael · 15/07/2021 13:33

Me neither. I'm meant to do them for work but I never have. We were each given 2 boxes to do over the summer holidays. Oops I accidentally on purpose left them at school Grin
AlphabetAerobics · 15/07/2021 13:39

I ordered some (first test ever!) and just about hurled when I had to scrape my tonsils - so have probably done that wrong - but I wanted to know how the whole set-up works in case I need to show them for travel next week.

It says we're supposed to inform Nicola of our result - but I'll be damned if I'm encouraging her.

Was also MORE than a little Hmm to notice the box had "made in China" stamped on the side...

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 15/07/2021 13:41

I confess I don't do the lateral flows regularly because I'm double vaccinated, working from home and asymptomatic so very unlikely to be transmitting COVID, and we've already had two 10-day long periods of quarantine for very spurious reasons and I don't think I could stand another one. I also don't think it's particularly helpful at this stage to be counting 'positive cases' who are increasingly unlikely to be seriously ill, and I do try to look after the environment so don't like all the plastic wastage either.

Ooof. Yes, me too. I'm not an ecowarrior by any means, and I'm not adverse to a bit of single use plastic for convenience, but the whole zero-waste/ low plastic society thing seems to have totally gone to pot over the past 18 months. So you still get your useless paper straws served in your drink (which are a waste of resources I'm sure, because they can't be used beyond the first 13 seconds before they disintegrate) but you also get a little plastic sanitiser wipe in a plastic wrapper, served by a waiter in a disposable mask and latex gloves and a plastic apron... Oh, and you can't have takeaway coffee in reusable cups cos covid, but you have to take 2 LFTs a week, times however many people in your house (and then dispose of them in double wrapped plastic) for the good of society. It's just gone crazy.

I confess, of all the judging judginess I've done over the past year, I judge people in disposable masks the most (not people in work/ hospital etc where they have to wear them, but random punters in the street). And triply judge those who actually dispose them (rather than trying to rinse them out and reuse Grin. Or just reuse. Because they find the paper ones more comfortable). Especially without benefit of a bin. Angry But they are so CARING making sure their germs don't stay in their handbag or pocket but get spread onto a single use bit of plastic-covered paper and thrown in the street. Because they couldn't cope with airing or washing some cloth at home, which is soooo unhygienic...

latissimusdorsi · 15/07/2021 14:11

Glad I'm not the only one @ResilienceWanker judging disposable mask wearers Grin

ResilienceWanker · 15/07/2021 14:18

Grin I was speaking to a kind-of-relative the other week who works in a bar, and she is supposed to have a new mask every shift (which presumably is disgusting for true believers, as you should really dispose them when they get a bit soggy). She has been using her current mask on rotation with another two for 4 months now... She takes them home and irons them and they look good as new! I admire her rebellion.

forfucksakenett · 15/07/2021 14:43

Enough may be enough but that's a pretty disgusting form of rebellion 🤢

Scottishskifun · 15/07/2021 15:32

😂 I mean I admire her commitment to rebel but she is in all likelihood increasing her chances of getting something!

ResilienceWanker · 15/07/2021 15:41

Grin Well, she and her family had covid in January when she was on furlough and not leaving the house, so I think she gave up at that point and kind of stopped worrying. She's just not keen on all the waste. She may have been exaggerating slightly, I don't know, as she had a fabric mask when we met, that looked perfectly laundered...

ResilienceWanker · 15/07/2021 15:56

I'm quite amused by the SG tying themselves in knots to get the 18-29 cohort to come forward for the vaccine. On one hand saying "you'll need it to travel abroad on holiday without quarantining on return". But on the other hand saying "you shouldn't be going abroad on holiday, and if you do we're going to impose complicated and expensive testing requirements on you, whether jagged or not".

riverrunning · 15/07/2021 16:38

I shouldn't admit this but a couple of disposable face masks made it through the washing machine fine, accidentally...

CatherineAragon · 15/07/2021 16:45

I have washed the disposable ones multiple times so I wouldn’t worry. I only throw them away if they break.

GoldenOmber · 15/07/2021 16:45

I suppose ironing them would be a good way to sterilise them anyway?

(I am a slattern who never irons anything, though!)

WouldBeGood · 15/07/2021 16:56

I’m selling my masks to China for the next biological warfare

I'm sure I read that ironing sanitises them.

If only I could find my iron. Blush

True- especially on the steam setting! 🤣

Grin If you make them into little bat-sized masks you could be onto something.

Yes, ironing is basically domestic autoclaving. Can't get much more sanitary than a freshly ironed mask. Possibly.

So Norovirus is doing the rounds (not just on Twitter news, we have relatives impacted in south London too, all three kids and one parent down in 12 hours of each other- school class all off).

This happened to us way back in the good old days of Nov 19- school managed it all well, without government interference and we dealt with the illness and following severe dehydration that can make small children and all ages with underlying illnesses in particular, very poorly.

We deal with these (bacterial) virus breakouts as grown ups. We don’t visit elderly relatives, we tend not to leave the house bathroom or vicinity of a washing machine go strolling round the shops with it, etc, etc. Sound familiar? Yet, here we are with all these well and healthy people masked up/pinged by an app, or being told to isolate/test for showing no symptoms whatsoever, controlled by a government as though we’re not responsible enough to get through life🤷‍♀️

I personally can’t wait to see NS and Jason on the TV with instructions on how to deal with a vomit-covered bedsheet at 3am
Good luck with wearing masks to protect from norovirus😉

Shock oh long hair capturing the vomit, nightmare. horrific memories of the bugs, which always seem to appear between 2am-4am. ‘We’re not giving in’ even though all the bedding and towels have been used up Truly, no government can prepare you for that🤣
