Can’t believe it’s needed….

@Icannever

£20 million of funding has been provided for this apparently
Has it been actually spent?

They could open up pools properly for a start.

Haudyourwheesht · 07/07/2021 14:48

I'm wondering if there'll be toddler groups again after the holidays? I keep hearing rumours of them but they're either in the wilds of Lanarkshire or with massive waiting lists. I'm just looking for a wee drop in Bookbug or similar.

Bookbug is back running in our area but you have to prebook and its outside.....
Icannever · 07/07/2021 14:56

@ElephantOfRisk opening pools properly would be amazing although my kids have become acclimatised to swimming in the north sea now so I guess that’s a good thing. Really miss an afternoon in Dundee pool though.

I just think we’re going to end up with even more overweight kids by the end of the holidays as they have done nothing. I will make sure mine get exercise but not everyone can do that so easily

ElephantOfRisk · 07/07/2021 15:03

Again, pools don't really impact me anymore but it's such a good option for Scotland in the summer when the weather isn't too good. Still exercise and is indoors. We are still level 2 in Stirling despite the fact that we are well below the Scottish average rates so I think that still means no softplay here? seen some photos on FB of families going to trampoline parks in other council areas though so it's good if you have transport.

Swimming was always a good cost effective activity though and I'm not really seeing an increased covid risk of using a slide in a pool as opposed to using one at the playpark.

Lots of kids out playing in my street which is good but i'm gritting my teeth about the noise of the bouncing balls all day when there are plenty of play areas/playgrounds nearby.

ElephantOfRisk · 07/07/2021 15:05

Oh, and according to twitter, Humza was on a family trip to London and took in the Harry Potter experience etc.

I've no problem with anyone having a holiday but if they were all away at once - even if easily contactable - that's not really how it should be done and wouldn't be the case in private industry.

WouldBeGood · 07/07/2021 15:33

Is this why my estate is overrun by feral children this summer?!

OP posts:
ElephantOfRisk · 07/07/2021 16:00

Again, obviously it's good children being out playing, but i don't understand why parents of DC that are about 9/10 and over and who want to play tennis/cricket/football don't send them round to the school playground or big field nearby. That's what i did when mine were too big for garden games or too old for me to be hanging out front supervising.

Instead, they end up hitting balls that hit houses and cars and whilst there is rarely any damage, it's annoying. Then they get told off and game is over, whereas they could be in the bigger areas and playing for ages without ending up being told off.

I guess I'm from the generation that played outside all the time, but we rarely ever played just in the street.

riverrunning · 07/07/2021 16:01

Hardly worth taking them to indoor places here - the national museum has all child related interactive things taped off.

I'm glad at least some paid holiday clubs are running - would love to see a breakdown on what the £20m was spent on...

ElephantOfRisk · 07/07/2021 16:08

Very rough calculations make that about £25 a head for the age 16 and below population?

£20Mm sounds a lot and obviously you get economies of scale, but unless my calculations are way out, it doesn't sound like a bumper summer of enjoyment. If you exclude babies then it's maybe a little more per head.

forfucksakenett · 07/07/2021 16:17

@Haudyourwheesht

I really don't think cancelling exams is a good idea though. The countries who do well academically tend to do exams. If unis are planning on doing their own exams for medicine, etc this year, as they don't trust the system, that's what's going keep happening in the future, meaning Scottish pupils will be further disadvantaged.
No but I remember when I was at uni, many years ago, the notion of continuous assessment was very much on the agenda and the uni was working towards scrapping summative assessment.

I'm torn tbh. I don't want an end to summative assessment from a personal point of view (this year was truly horrific professionally) but I do see many problems with summative assessment carried out on such a formal way. I don't think it's very future proof.

randomsabreuse · 07/07/2021 16:19

I've found a fair few sports clubs running - Bearsden Ski Club has a load of kids' courses from 4 up (2 hours), all the Tennis clubs have stuff and the local athletics club is running free sessions for P1-P7 although these are only 1 hour so no good for childcare. Lots of stressed parents juggling drop offs and pick ups with work...

WouldBeGood · 07/07/2021 16:50

Exactly, @ElephantOfRisk; these kids are around twelve and perfectly able to gather and play at the local park.

Then there are tiny ones on tiny bikes flying out in front of cars. Scary. I hadn’t realised so few kids leisure/holiday stuff was available.

OP posts:
randomsabreuse · 07/07/2021 16:58

However all the courses are at least £100/week for a short half day and most of what I've found has been in Bearsden...

Can't get on a swimming waiting list though...

Ladylunchalot · 07/07/2021 18:09

Lots of activities for kids here in North Lanarkshire organised by the council. Loads of info about them on Facebook and even emails too. We also have free swimming again for kids Mon to Fri during the holidays.

Railing big style now as she’s saying lockdown end “not set in stone” 🤬

Well if we don't come out of lockdown now..then when??

When the schools are back??..nop she's gonna say we need to prioritise the schools

Then it will be autumn and she will say NHS might be overwhelmed ..

Before we know it ..it will be spring 2022..

Meanwhile in England parties , weddings nightclubs etc

And what is she going to do about furlough...the UK govt won't pay if England Is open I wouldn't think

I am honestly scunnered with her

WouldBeGood · 07/07/2021 21:38

Me too @frasersmummy. This is just too much now.

I can’t see how she can carry on if she does this while all the other vaccinated countries open up. It shows the mishandling.

OP posts:
Icannever · 07/07/2021 22:24

I can’t see any point in us being cautious about unlocking of England isn’t. Whatever happens needs a U.K. approach or there’s no point surely? So Scottish government would just be penalising business etc for no reason is she keeps us
Locked down. And surely it wouldn’t be fair for kids in English schools to be able to be in school without isolating and our kids not. People would be mad surely?
It feels like there’s no logic anymore.

Btw Fife does not have lots of clubs running. As far as I can see the council are running nothing at all apart from some vague drop in and play sessions once a week 25 miles away from me. And swimming pool has £1 kids but you can’t take your kids or even watch them, they have to go in their own and as they haven’t had swimming lessons since the start of covid and one kids has dyspraxia I’m not that comfortable with that.

Arewethereyet21 · 07/07/2021 22:51

My rail this evening is that I have always been one of the ‘anyone but England’ supporters in sport. However, I am so pissed off with the Scottish Government’s anti English hatred agenda that I just found myself supporting England in the Euros. Strange times.

Scottishskifun · 07/07/2021 23:16

😂 I'm English and I didn't watch the football mostly because I hate football full stop!

I did hear booing from the pub though at the second goal and England win. I really hate booing other teams don't care who people support but booing is completely not sporting at all!

WouldBeGood · 07/07/2021 23:21

I love football and am supporting England as my ds is half English and supports them. So, good result! Also I’m hopeful it will keep the impetus to lift restrictions in England, and pile the pressure on here 😃

I'm railing against Denmark as I had them in the family sweepie. I have lost my chance at the coveted Fudge Doughnut of Victory.

WouldBeGood · 07/07/2021 23:57

That is well worth a rail @SoMuchForSummerLove!

Really sorry to hear that so many posters have covid or are isolating (or both obviously).

My rail is a football one (again).

DS final degree performance in London was rescheduled for Mon 12th after some of the students got covid. A small audience is allowed. DH, DD and I have rail tickets for travel down on Sunday and back on Monday. I'm guessing the train will be full of fans from Carlisle onwards Angry I'm not frightened of heating covid per se - am double jabbed but if I do get covid from a football fan or have to self isolate because a football fan has tested positive I'll be so angry at the way football fans spoil it for other people with their entitled behaviour.

I'm pleased for the English team I suppose. Finally their colossal spending on some of the best players is getting results and that makes fans happy, but spreading covid around and generally behaving badly cos football/history blah blah is annoying.
