So irresponsible. Here we go again. Will Glasgow ever be out of lockdown?

@charliebrown59

I don't know, it's a fine line, will there be hate speech at the pro-Palestinian marches?

Personally think they should be looking for and prosecuting those crimes if happening on marches rather than the right to march itself.

Very good point . If the march is there to intimate and spread hate it shouldn’t happen regardless. I can’t think of a single reason why orange or republican walks should go ahead.
Haudyourwheesht · 20/05/2021 19:26

I've lived in Glasgow for 23 years and have not yet seen one of these oft- mentioned Hibs marches. I've seen dozens, if not hundreds, of Orange walks.

@awaynboilyurheid

Why do we stilll have Catholic schools and non catholic or non denominational as they are called? Why cant ALL children go to their local school, then have seperate RE lessons when needed ? I am from a mixed religious family, the half on my fathers side are Roman catholic and my mothers side Protestant, I dont get Glasgows religious divide in schooling. I believe it breeds religious bigotry, and then encourages the division into Celtic and Rangers, no amount of telling me otherwise will convince me, we are making children from a very early age think that religion divides and seperates us all.
What a load of tosh

And me. They're always cited in discussions about orange walls

I've never witnessed one in my life either

More whataboutery

Seeingadistance · 20/05/2021 19:48

I've never seen a Hibs walk either, and when I worked for a Local Authority in Ayrshire I dealt with the permissions for public processions - loads of Orange Walks, not one Hibs Walk.

UmpteenthTime · 20/05/2021 19:56

I never witnessed a Hibs walk either, avoided Orange walks like the plague but I heard plenty of IRA supporting songs from Celtic fans and then there’s the Palestinian flag waving.
Naive view, but how about both sides just enjoy watching some fairly mediocre football without the need to drag religion or politics into it.

AddisonMontgomeryShepherd · 20/05/2021 20:02

I have witnessed a hibs walk shopping in Glasgow before so amazed people who live their haven't! I didn't realise what it was though until dp told me.

I work in Glasgow and have witnessed many. Infact looking on Glasgow city council will show there was 30 of the in 2019. Very small compared to the 130 orange walks but to deny their existence is laughable .
Honeycombskl · 20/05/2021 20:08

Another one who spent most of my life in Glasgow (for about 30 years before moving up north) who has never seen a hibs walk. To be honest I've barely even heard them mentioned unless it's when people are debating if orange walks should be cancelled.

Honeycombskl · 20/05/2021 20:10

To be honest though I don't think it matters how prevalent they are, if they allow the kind of sectarian songs and attitude that the orange walks do I'd be happy for them to be cancelled along with the orange walks.

Boomisshiss · 20/05/2021 20:13

From what I’ve seen they are tiny compared to orange walks. With only a few hundred people attending . Definitely not as much violence as I’ve seen at orange walks but pro IRA banners that sort of thing .
Haudyourwheesht · 20/05/2021 20:15

So my lived experience is laughable? Confused. I never denied that 'Hibs' walks happen. I said I haven't seen one. I do not process walk applications for the council so haven't seen the paperwork for one either.

Selkiesarereal · 20/05/2021 20:23

I’ve seen a few hibs marches but far more orange walks. This is another thing I don’t understand as to why in this day and age they are still allowed.

Quincie · 20/05/2021 20:49

Does the history actually justify this aggro continuing for centuries.
Most history is not straightforward
We have a few Covenanters monuments round here ( Dumfries) - erected in the late 1800s. Certainly there was some very cruel treatments and deaths of Covenanters.
Not sure how much this contributes to present day attitudes. Or if it all stems from Irish/ NI history.

LimeMint · 20/05/2021 20:56

There are Catholic schools in every single corner of the globe. Something like 60 million children and young people are educated in them. Absolutely laughable to suggest that grown men can brawl in the street because of the existence of Catholic schools.

On the Hibs march note, I have seen one and it was in a very Catholic area of the city. I think it went from one church to another.

Selkiesarereal · 20/05/2021 21:04

I should add that all the orange and gin matches were in the city centre. I’m an income to the city and now out in the burbs but was shocked at seeing these as it just didn’t exist in the part of Scotland I’m from which is why I still raise my eyebrow at all of this and the views posted on this thread as it really does show a lot of bitterness on both sides— something I never experienced in my childhood, it almost seems normalised.

Selkiesarereal · 20/05/2021 21:08

Oops gin marches now they sound far more fun than the hibs marches I was meaning Grin

Orange and hibs marches should both be banned IMO but a gin March is something I could get on board with Grin
Boomisshiss · 20/05/2021 21:21

Gin march now that’s something I could get behind literally
