Running, I know it's not a permanent solution, but when you map a route on Google maps, you can select a route that will avoid highways. Whilst it might take much longer, you can generally get anywhere by local roads. You can sort of treat that as part of your holiday. I've been driving for over 30 years and still get anxious about slip roads and I won't drive into Glasgow.

Lidlfix · 11/06/2021 11:14

Totally agree with Redacted, been driving a long time too but lack confidence on unfamiliar, complex routes. Downloading alternatives and being able to visualise the tricky parts using street view helps me to work out landmarks etc to help me navigate.

ElephantOfRisk · 11/06/2021 11:58

Also with the bypass, it's sometimes easiest to go when it's at its most busy as it's at a standstill and you just crawl along and merge.

It's a testament to my love for my children that despite the anxiety and nausea from needing to go on the motorway from the slip road, I did it every week day for nearly 7 years to collect them from school. Occasionally I would manage to wangle leaving early and as a treat to myself I would go the long way round which took more than twice as long Grin

latissimusdorsi · 11/06/2021 12:37

@runningpink when I was a kid Captains Rd, Frogston Rd and Oxgangs Rd was the ring road round Edinburgh before they built the Bypass. Could you go that way round? Be easier to take it at your own pace

Groovee · 11/06/2021 13:24

@runningpink where are you based? I'm confident on the bypass and would be happy once school finishes to maybe give you that moral support?

Groovee · 11/06/2021 15:46

Was meant to meet a friend for coffee but Mr G has a leaking wound so she's coming here and we'll use the summer house.

shouldistop · 11/06/2021 22:37

Another ridiculously hot air bnb tonight Sad give me my draughty pre-war bungalow any day.

Window wide open. Hopefully ds2 wakes for a night feed whilst it's still dark so I can close it over or he'll think it's party time as it will be too light. Had to put a cold cloth on ds1s head so he could fall asleep (in the scud)

WouldBeGood · 12/06/2021 06:13

@Groovee oh lord, hope he’s ok and that you had a nice coffee with your friend.

@shouldistop hope you and yours got some sleep!

Thanks for all the driving advice, I will have a look at where I might like to go and look at route options.

@Groovee that’s such a kind offer. Thank you! I’m pretty sure a friend will sit with me but I will keep your offer in mind.

I hope Mr G is ok. I hope things get easier for you soon

Groovee · 12/06/2021 08:28

We have the nurse coming to sort Mr G's wound.

My friend and I had a fab catch.

Lockdownbear · 12/06/2021 08:43

Runningpink, just thinking if you'd be more comfortable with a driving instructor it might still be worth contacting a couple to see if they could fit you in.

There's a difference between taking someone out a couple of times to build confidence and having a client starting from scratch who'll want lessons for months.
They might be able to fit you in when a regular can't make it because of holidays etc

Lidlfix · 12/06/2021 08:50

Railing for DD1 a teacher in her early 20s. Received her vaccination text - 24th . She'll have one day in the classroom vaccinated in area where cases are ripping through schools. Not much of second dose before she starts back in August either Angry.

ssd · 12/06/2021 09:22

So unfair how teachers have been treated. Also policemen and women. Not being made a priority for the vaccine. All wrong.

Lidl, when I was getting my 2nd last week, the lady doing my jag was saying that they were trying to prioritise young teachers and other public facing young people and they could register with the centre to get a call for spare slots. I'm not sure how they do that and if your person is forth valley too but worth trying to find out?
Lidlfix · 12/06/2021 10:03

Thank Redacted. She's on a register for this and for the (creds to poster who penned the expression) "bin list". But so are thousands of others. It's a matter of days really but frustrating nonetheless.

She's accepted a post in a local authority that goes back earlier than here too. So that second dose is really important too. She's as fit as a proverbial and a former elite sportswoman so not worried about being ill just the pain in the arse of being off and potentially causing others to isolate.

We are Forth Valley and I was fast tracked for second dose as a 40+ teacher, it looks like some measures are working.

Everyone in schools are just trying to dodge the spending the first 10 days of the holidays in isolation bullet Sad

Coquohvan · 12/06/2021 12:48

From this week France will let us in, just need proof off vaccine status to enter, they also offer a free test to get home to the UK. Fingers crossed the UK will move France to green or it’s test and isolate when home.
They are having less cases than us now 🤷‍♀️
Anyone else contemplating a holiday overseas this summer?

You can ask for a paper copy to be sent out below, says allow up to 21 days to come, ordered ours Tuesday came this am.

mondaywine · 12/06/2021 13:05

Glad to hear that some teachers are being prioritised finally. However I have to admit that I am frustrated that it’s not been a universal priority. It’s been a postcode lottery. I am a 46yr old teacher who is only 2 weeks post vaccine 1. They weren’t hopeful I’d have the second dose before going back in August. Cases got so bad here that we were closed for two weeks to get it under control recently.

Icannever · 12/06/2021 13:44

@Coquohvan do you know what France says about children under 12 who obviously can’t have vaccination yet. Would they be allowed in if their parents are vaccinated? Do you need to test before you go if you’ve been vaccinated?

Coquohvan · 12/06/2021 16:45

@Icannever yes ATM children under 18 travelling with parents/adults do not need any vaccination and are allowed to travel with them.
Yes you need a test before entry into France ATM. We will arranged one via Eurotunnel, search around as some are ridiculous prices.
You will also ATM require to download and complete a “Statement of Honor” stating you’ve not kissed hugged or licked anyone with Covid. Link in English below.

For return if tests still required we’re going to use this company

Coquohvan · 12/06/2021 17:10

Here @Icannever is a map of where you can book a free test on your return to uk.

Scottishskifun · 12/06/2021 17:22

It's frustrating to read that some areas didn't prioritise teachers. Our HB did for excess think it went police, fire service, teachers then front line council workers etc. They then had the additional bin list as well for if there was a dose left in the vial which is how I got mine earlier.

Our health authority has told people to avoid unnecessary travel which is so frustrating! We have completely ignored it and in the West Coast North but my god its windy!

Lockdownbear · 13/06/2021 08:39

I know it's cheating slightly but I wouldn't have criticised any teacher or nursery staff who claimed 'unpaid carer' status especially when they didn't ask who or what you were caring for.

Lanarkshire are down to doing the younger age groups now so hopefully all other areas will be the same.

WouldBeGood · 13/06/2021 11:02

Second jag day today.

They’d better free me after this 😃

OP posts:
ssd · 13/06/2021 11:23

Thats good.
I dont understand not feeling free. I feel free, theres still restrictions like masks and social distancing but i just get in with it. No one at work likes wearing masks in a hot shop but we do it. If i want to meet pals i do, or go somewhere with dh. Cinemas are open, restaurants pubs all open. Its not as spontaneous as before but that doesn't trouble me..
Im not desperate for all restrictions to be removed, sure if i was wfm and went out once in a blue moon I'd be shouting for their removal as it doesn't particularly affect me....day to day on public transport and busy shop I'm quite glad there's still some restrictions in place as customers are right in my face .

ssd · 13/06/2021 11:26

I dont agree with a lot of the mixed messages from the government and it must be awful if you're a business owner
