@forfucksakenett

I think perhaps you're generalising a bit. Maybe just focusing on where you live? Wherever I've been when travelling across Scotland there's always been outdoor space for eating and drinking in even the smallest rural areas. Maybe I've just gotten lucky.
Not really it's a completely different outdoor eating culture. We travel quite a lot with our campervan around Scotland. You may get a pub or cafe which has a few tables or picnic benches outside but it's not the same thing. It's the weather it's less of a cultural summer past time.

Most villages in England have at least one pub with a large beer garden, which is often grassed, has a children's climbing frame and between 30-100 tables.

There has been a increase due to the pandemic of setting up outside seating but it's definitely not as wide spread as it is in English towns and villages.

forfucksakenett · 03/05/2021 13:00

Ah so it's about the number of covers and climbing frames then? Very strange to me as I have so many memories of a lifetime of eating outdoors all around Scotland. Genuinely didn't know England had a completely different outdoor eating culture. Every day is a school day. 100 tables is a lot.

It's several things the setting, tables etc its very common to spend a good few hours outdoor dining/in a beer garden in English towns and villages as its better set up and they have better weather for it 🤷‍♂️

Scotland it's a lot less common in fact councils last year working with businesses to try and improve it often shutting off streets to vehicles to allow more outdoor dining/pubs and covers as not that many had it in the first place!

Not sure why its contencious to you for me to state that the outdoor eating culture in England is different to Scotland and easier to find places for a pp going to England for a trip.

Many thanks. I called and got his date which is next week. The lady on the phone was brilliant. It was quick and easy.

forfucksakenett · 03/05/2021 13:58

It's not that it's contentious it's just that it doesn't square with my experience. I have travelled fairly widely across the UK and it's not how I would remember things. That being said I haven't, of course, been everywhere so will absolutely take your word for it.

I hope everyone’s enjoying their drinks outdoors in liberal Scotland. Who cares about the Gale force winds, icy rain, and 4degree temperature?!

WouldBeGood · 03/05/2021 14:25

It’s pretty obvious that outdoor drinking and dining is more part of the culture where the weather is better 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well at least we can go inside for something to eat! The poor English don't have that option.
rookiemere · 03/05/2021 14:34

@WouldBeGood luckily we got our walk in this morning before the worst of the weather set in, I must admit the thought of schlepping across town to use the outdoor pool is currently not appealing Grin.

WouldBeGood · 03/05/2021 14:35

We are indeed blessed compared to those poor English souls.

WouldBeGood · 03/05/2021 14:38

@rookiemere that was lucky: it’s mental out now.

Went to PT this morning and then was going to collect some items but the weather is too bad and the M8 riddled with traffic jams so I just came home.

Would be a perfect day for a cinema outing with my boy..

RedactedTaeFeck · 03/05/2021 16:26

It will be a while before cinemas get back to normal I suppose. I mean have any decent films been made that will be released? Or will it just be socially distanced popcorn eating watching older movies?

WouldBeGood · 03/05/2021 16:31

We went after the summer lockdown snd it was fine.

Looking forward to Black Widow, but tbh we will watch any old shoot em up rubbish for a nice mother and son day out and a hot dog

Tomorrowisanewday · 03/05/2021 17:27

I went a couple of times when they were allowed to open after the first lockdown, and it was fine.

James Bond is now being scheduled for release in October - apparently they're spending £10million on the red carpet events!! But there are a number of films that have been screened online that are rumoured to be released in cinemas going forward.

Scottishskifun · 03/05/2021 19:11

Watching the one show with the tests being done on attending festivals etc so glad to see some normality all be it in a test scenario!
Haven't seen anything like this for Scotland apparently it's just football which is allowed to have tests 🙄

Icannever · 03/05/2021 20:32

Couldn’t agree more @Scottishskifun. Beer gardens in England are half the reason we go on holiday there so often 😀.
We’ve just booked a holiday house in Alton in the peak district, very rural very small village (although next to Alton towers) with two pubs which have beer gardens going right down to the river and a couple more pubs/restaurants with nice outdoor courtyards. Much prefer sitting with the kids in a beer garden than inside (if it’s not raining 😊)

Icannever · 03/05/2021 20:36

In contrast we live in Fife and only one good beer garden I can think of near us before lockdown. Now lots of pop up things but often on roads or pavements or just slightly larger versions of the smoking areas that were there before.
On a totally different note, we went to Edinburgh yesterday for the first time in a over a year. Is it just that it’s been a long time since I’ve been there and I’ve forgotten or has it got much dirtier, more graffiti everywhere, just generally more run down feeling than I remember? Maybe I’ve got too used to being out in the sticks 😳

Icannever · 03/05/2021 22:11

Not meaning to be rude about Edinburgh at all btw just felt different to what I’d thought 😊

That's what Glasgow town centre was like last time I was there. Very grim. I'm hoping it'll improve now people are allowed out again.
