Just in case railing remains required.

@TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong

An exam by any other name....

From my S4 son's POV he's hard at it studying for these timed, supervised, SQA moderated papers... may as well be the actual Nat5s as far as we can tell 🤷‍♀️

I work in the junior school (TA, not teacher) and am hearing how senior school staff are going to be working flat out to mark exams, moderate in house (and I think somebody said with other school for some subjects?), select best pieces of work etc to submit varying pieces of evidence ( depending on subjects) to support their assessment of grades deserved by each and every pupil. I understand SQA will randomly pick samples to moderate themselves.

All of which would've been much easier, obviously, if they could have had kids back in for face to face teaching sooner!

To me that sounds like the SQA outsourcing the exams and just piling a load of extra work on teachers after an already very trying year...

But education is a priority of course 😠

But it's ok, as they're 'gifting' us £400 (pro- rata) as a sign of their gratitude.
forfucksakenett · 07/04/2021 21:37

@Haudyourwheesht yes that's what we are doing as well but it's so unfair on the kids. A full exam but split into three. Assessment after assessment after assessment knowing that it's their final grade and all this after weeks of online learning. It's bloody horrible.

Mistressinthetulips · 07/04/2021 21:43

They've been suggesting we used the SQA papers as they've been pre moderated but said we could do them however we wish.
I'm wondering about this - with lots of schools using the newest paper, and with young people sitting the exams assessments on different days, how long before the questions are all shared on social media? Not by staff obviously! But students

One of my Higher students made that exact point. And this is a nice boy, hard working, teacher pleaser.

Mistressinthetulips · 07/04/2021 21:49

Even in the same subject in the same school they might not be able to hold the assessment on the same day for each class. No way they won't talk to their own pals about it.

Lockdownbear · 07/04/2021 22:03

And what stops the teachers saying for Monday you need to know xyz, Tuesday you need to know abc.

I'd be more surpr if teachers didn't give loaded hints than if they did.

littlbrowndog · 07/04/2021 22:08

Sorry wax to hear stuff has been horrid

I have been having friends and family round into my house for a while now

I felt like I might hurt my children. Too much for me after a year of this

So that’s what I did.

Mistressinthetulips · 07/04/2021 22:23

That sounds really hard, littlebrowndog

WouldBeGood · 08/04/2021 00:05

@littlbrowndog I’m with you 💐

@littlbrowndog Thanks hope things are feeling better now.

riverrunning · 08/04/2021 07:36

How is a piece of work done in a moderated environment. not an exam? Some verbal trickery on display there!

Are we nearly there yet? Dragged the kids food shopping yesterday, they wanted to eat lunch in the park but so cold and windy they begged to go home after 5 minutes.

anon444877 · 08/04/2021 08:08

wax, littll, ski and running so sorry to hear about the bad times, hoping for weather improvement and opening up of our lives soon.

@littlbrowndog I've had a friend and kids in too - i cracked - she's not vulnerable, we aren't, so many vaccinated. Afraid I was so excited to have someone round I opened a second bottle and paid for that the next day!

DeepfriedPizza · 08/04/2021 08:21

Sorry to hear about those who are struggling.

My snotty nose developed into a cough last night so I’m being a good wee soldier and booked myself for a test at 9am. I hope I get the results before the weekend.
Does anyone know how long results are taking?

Scottishskifun · 08/04/2021 08:33

@DeepfriedPizza we were 13 hours a few weeks ago, friends who had to test this week were the same.

titsintiers · 08/04/2021 08:39

Fingers crossed it's just a sniffle @DeepfriedPizza, I had a test at 9.30am last week and had the results at 8pm the same night.

shouldistop · 08/04/2021 08:46

We've only had one test when ds1 spiked a temperature on Christmas Eve. Had the test that afternoon and results Christmas morning.

Icannever · 08/04/2021 09:23

Less than 24 hours for any test we’ve had.

Icannever · 08/04/2021 09:25

I’d just like to rail at the weather please. I’m fed up of being frozen, forced to stand around outside while kids play with their friends. This is not spring!

shouldistop · 08/04/2021 09:28

@Icannever it's shit isn't it. I was meant to be taking ds1 to his friends garden to play after nursery today but we've had to take a rain check literally. Maybe we'll try the barbers again ...

WouldBeGood · 08/04/2021 09:32

Hope you feel better soon @DeepfriedPizza.

@Icannever I’ll join you in weather railing. It’s bloody freezing, and no sign of any change. Miserable.

Yesterday I went for a wander round some actual nice fancy homeware shops. It felt weird! I did resist buying anything, amazingly.

Today is click and collect grocery pick up and maybe a takeaway soup from a garden centre... the excitement!

I really feel they need to free us. People are too down. DP utterly fed up, as is everyone I know.

LookAChicken · 08/04/2021 09:56

We went for it with the garden, planting bulbs and new plants in autimn but I'm really not getting the benefit as huddled indoors! So yes to railing against the weather.

I had my first vaccine jab this week which actually cheered me up, despite the panic inducing news coverage.

I'll have to reintroduce myself slowly to stuff like fancy shops and well, humankind!

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 08/04/2021 10:02

Have lurked on this thread, just joining for a moan.

Re the exams which aren't exams - do you think they will be marked blind? Otherwise I would be worried about bias with marking? Even if marked blind, teachers might recognise the student's work - am not implying teachers would be anything less than professional, but unconscious bias might creep in.

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 08/04/2021 10:03

I would like to rail about how fucking hard it's been to buy a bloody cooker. Mine on the blink and my god what a faff to try and get a Jew one. Of course none of these shops open to actually speak to anyone.

I seen something today that apparently we reach herd immunity on Monday? Does anyone know if this is true? It was Twitter so can sometimes be dodgy

Icannever · 08/04/2021 10:07

@IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 it’s in the independent as well as Twitter but it’s just a guess I think. UCL has a model showing it but everyone else seems to disagree

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 08/04/2021 10:08

That is annoying. Can't see why homeward shops can open, but not places selling appliances. And don't get me started on shoes - not sure why shoes aren't considered essential, but buying plants is?
