Rangers fans celebrating in a pandemic

No social distancing at all, few masks in sight. Apparently at least 1000 outside ibrox , hundreds in George square.

Total superspreader events, even outside. The new viruses are much easier to catch.

Bloody great.

People will deny sectarianism exists.

🤷🏼‍♀️apparently, that's just 'banter'

Just like when rangers won against Celtic a few months ago and I was at a wedding in a Catholic church - incidentally allowed max 20 people- and a car went by when we were taking photos outside blasting the famine song and shouting 'F* the pope'

But,it's just 'banter'

I hope the whole of Scottish football is plunged into suspension now. Wont hold my breath...

WeAllHaveWings · 07/03/2021 22:58

Lets lay the blame firmly where it sits and that is on the rangers fans at ibrox or any other gatherings.

Plenty of loyal fans celebrated at home
The SG is not to blame the fans know the law and further advice was given
The police are not to blame, holding back is the correct action and is the best way to prevent an aggressive response

The SFA and the club could have given stronger messages
The football commentary on clyde 1 was almost encouraging it saying fans will go because they need to celebrate.

PoloMintPatty · 07/03/2021 22:59

@dementedpixie

Larkhall also having people in the streets (I know people there). My brother lives near Glasgow Town centre and can hear the noise from his flat
Saw these pics on Facebook earlier too. Quite a few on the streets.

I'm sure it was the same in some other places across Ayrshire and Lanarkshire Angry

I agree 100%
Scottishskifun · 07/03/2021 23:08

I think it's was entirely predictable.

I disagree whole heartily with fans doing this and aware of the consequences it causes.
If they wanted to prevent it they could have by strong message from the club, SG in advance and using police as last resort.

Will wait 2 weeks and watch Glasgow/Lanarkshire numbers to see the real effect.
It's the rest of the central belt I feel sorry for!

areyoumeop · 07/03/2021 23:35

it s amazing that some gatherings are okay and others are condemned. social media and representatives of the SG full of condemnation for the scenes at a particular football ground, but nothing mentioned after the Cup Final the previous week or even the BLM protests. Also pretty certain that a lot of the people condemning the scenes would have attended similar across the city if results had been different. Also dont think there will be a rise in case numbers as similar to the BLM protests which also didn't cause a spike, people were outside, a fair number were wearing masks and they weren't sharing facilities, just gathered together.

Snowrabbit · 08/03/2021 00:14

I don't condone in any way what happened BUT... I doubt very much there will be a significant uptick in cases from these outside gatherings. And it's naive to think that anyone going to a house party tonight isn't doing these sorts of thing anyway. Part of the problem is people have been caged in for SO long and there is no way to keep a lid on human nature indefinitely. Banning the leagues would have been insane in a life so deprived of normal pleasure for so many people (i'm not a football fan by the way!) Have there been outbreaks linked to the meetings and committees at, for example, the Scottish Parliament? No... People getting outraged should probably see this was inevitable and the longer these kind of lockdowns go on, human nature will be for people to eventually think - screw this - when they get a chance to enjoy themselves and celebrate. Why will today's gatherings be much worse than the thousands of kids in the same buildings in English schools tomorrow? Yes it will mainly be scumbags and idiots who will have been out today . But not worth getting all angry about it as this won't be the first time I bet that we see complete defiance as this goes on and on. And I completely agree with the previous post.

Scottishskifun · 08/03/2021 00:26

@Snowrabbit 😂 there is currently a outbreak at Holyrood they had to do a deep clean and several staff self isolating.

I think the difference with the blm protests were in summer with a less transmitting variant. Research has shown in outdoor settings that spread is reduced but that in colder temperatures the droplets stay airborne longer than in warmer temperatures.

StarryEyeSurprise · 08/03/2021 07:41

Murdo Fraser trying to stir as usual but just made himself look stupid.

I was just waiting for someone to compare it to the BLM protests. Because it's just the same. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Beepbeeprichie · 08/03/2021 08:05

Well no of course it’s not @icanboogieboogiewoogie but in terms of people outside/ large gathering it does have similarities and we will all be watching to see if infection rates go up or not, as we were last summer.
It’s like saying having a house party is the same as a wake- completely different justifications but the virus’ transmission opportunities are the same.

StarryEyeSurprise · 08/03/2021 08:39

I wouldn't say so actually.

I didn't see any videos of the people gathering for BLM, getting into a large huddle, arms draped over each other and running together into an even bigger huddle.

Also, I could be wrong but I don't think the BLM protesters were kissing each other on the head. So, no the likelihood of transmission is not the same.

I'm going to try and ignore this thread for a while - don't think my blood pressure can take it!!

WhiskyIrnBru · 08/03/2021 09:07

Comparing drunken bigots celebrating, smashing up Celtic shops and pissing around the statues they 'defended' last summer to BLM.

Aye. Def comparable.

Hmm
RaspberryCoulis · 08/03/2021 09:10

I am not a football fan in the slightest.

We heard fireworks going off yesterday afternoon as we're not far from the training ground in Milngavie, the team were apparently there for "training" on a Sunday afternoon.... Some of their fans also kindly sprayed graffiti all over Milngavie village yesterday. Nice.

I don't believe that people standing outside is a "superspreader event". Yes the police should have broken up the parties and told people to go home but there's little to no evidence that outside gatherings cause widespread transmission - everyone said the same about the BLM protests in the summer and people going to the beach.

I'm more angry about the mess and vandalism.

RaspberryCoulis · 08/03/2021 09:15

@icanboogieboogiewoogie

Obviously it's not the same - but it is a large outside gathering of people outside.
RJnomore1 · 08/03/2021 09:28

The BLM protests in Glasgow did not, to the best of my recollection, involve large groups of pissed up men hugging each other, bouncing about, singing loudly, setting off flares and harassing passers by all throughout the city.

Peppafrig · 08/03/2021 09:29

When thousands of Celtic fans turned up at Parkhead vandalising and disgustingly attacking police officers in November did the numbers go up then ?

Bloodypunkrockers · 08/03/2021 09:33

I see whataboutery is alive and well.

I'm listening to Kaye Adams and it's just the same.

The world of people who tie their identify so much to their football team is alien to me.

RaspberryCoulis · 08/03/2021 09:38

Of course it shouldn't have happened and yes the police should have sent people home.

But I just don't buy into the fact that outside gatherings are the superspreader events which the OP mentions. Whatever the reason for that gathering. Like I said, I'm angrier about the vandalism and litter left on our local streets by people who probably got back on the train and went home.

DareIask · 08/03/2021 09:41

Just kick the team out of the league.

Simple.

Peppafrig · 08/03/2021 09:42

@DareIask

Just kick the team out of the league.

Simple.

And Celtic too due to their fans rule breaking last year I guess .
ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 08/03/2021 09:42

Wouldn't it be wonderful if there is no spike at all in cases? Then we can all breathe a sigh of relief and get the restrictions lifted.
Pity there's no vaccine against sectarianism, vandalism and lack of respect though Hmm

Sadly it runs deep in both Celtic and Rangers
snowcoveredcampsies · 08/03/2021 09:54

Haha @Peppafrig I love the desperation with which you are trying to make Celtic comparable.

Show me a time that any other football team in Scotland engaged in such mass destruction of their own city.

I'll wait.

I've heard this morning that they smashed up shops along argyle street? Is this true?

Absolutely horrific behaviour. They are a national embarrassment.

Nikki078 · 08/03/2021 09:54

I'm not suprised at the gatherings tbh but slightly puzzled by what seems like a total lack of official response or even comment ... I seem to recall a sledging crowd/crowded beach/parents standing at schoolgate getting more.
