"So what England’s got is a plan for returning to normality, and an assurance that we aren’t trying to eliminate covid. What Scotland’s got, currently, is a plan for returning to Level 3, and a big grey fuzzy area over what the end goal actually is.

Quite possibly they’ll both unfold at the same pace anyway, but people need hope and vision at this point, nor ‘check back in 3 weeks’."

So we're basically children then. We need someone to bullshit and ameliorate us to make us feel better. No actual hard truths here please.

No wonder the UK has got the fucking leader it deserves.

GoldenOmber · 23/02/2021 17:33

There are always new variants to nurture if we don't get it low.

This is the case for every other virus on the planet.

MintPI · 23/02/2021 17:34

Cheerleaders have arrived I see.

Huge difference for teenagers who can go back to school a whole 6 weeks before those in Scotland who will continue to be isolated from their peers.

In England theres the possibility of SC holidays - so people can visit their loved ones in another area. I've no hope of seeing my parents until the 17th of may.

kurtrussellsbeard · 23/02/2021 17:35

@Scottishskifun I'm sorry I don't mean to be rude but are you actually professionally qualified in this area at all?

I'm going to trust people who can actually read data, who actually have all the data and who are able to make projections based on it.

And that btw is the medical and scientific officers for all 4 nations who are in broad agreement that caution is best. Sadly one leader isn't interested in that and instead is showboating.

Everyone with google is an expert these day and it's embarrassing.

WouldBeGood · 23/02/2021 17:35

No. English schools all back in 8th March. No idea when my boy will go back but it’s certainly after Easter - who knows if then, or full or part time.

What am I supposed to tell him?

GoldenOmber · 23/02/2021 17:35

No, people need hope (yes! Even adults!), after giving up a year of their lives. And people need some sort of say and buy-in over the end goal. Deciding that the end goal you would prefer is ‘hard truth’ and the one I would prefer is ‘bulls hit’ doesn’t change the fact that in a democracy we do usually get some form of a say.

kurtrussellsbeard · 23/02/2021 17:35

@MintPI by cheerleaders do you mean folk with a different opinion to you?

Scottishskifun · 23/02/2021 17:35

I missed argyll and bute as you can clearly see scottish govt data! 1-49/100,000

That is true. Covid isnt every other virus. Neither is ebola. It has had a massive impact. The next one could infect children more readily and have more of an effect. Easing lockdown gently is the way to go. It isnt worth taking the chance.
WouldBeGood · 23/02/2021 17:36

Plus the English schools finish later than Scotland so months more learning and contact with their peers.

kurtrussellsbeard · 23/02/2021 17:36

I cannot believe grown adults are coming on here moaning that they weren't offered false hope? 🤷🏻‍♀️

GoldenOmber · 23/02/2021 17:37

I mean, I know there are very many MNers who would feel safest having restrictions in place forever if anyone so much as coughs, but most of us feel that the vaccines are as good as we can get and we’d quite like a route to get our lives back now even if you wouldn’t, thanks ever so.

No other virus is in active pandemic mode and killing tens of thousands daily...

The truth. 'I have two at high school. In the scheme of things, its a matter of months. They also could be back earlier. Better to be safe than sorry. Much harder to get the virus back under control and much longer. This way, its eased slowly and more sustainable.
anon444877 · 23/02/2021 17:38

It isn't the same - huge difference with international travel and travel within RUK. Did we even get a date for self catering re opening in Scotland?

GoldenOmber · 23/02/2021 17:38

@kurtrussellsbeard

I would like actual hope. Is this really such an odd idea? “Can’t BELIEVE that people want to know if they’ll ever get to hug their families again, what IMMATURE CHILDREN, I am so wise and clever.”
Lucienandjean · 23/02/2021 17:38

I live in Edinburgh. I haven't left the city since last October. I'm sick to death of the same narrow view and dull little walks. I desperately want to travel. Ideally to England, to see my family, but actually I'd settle for a day out - a trip out in the car to the Kelpies, or over to Fife for a few hours.

Yet according to today's "plan", at the end of April we MAY (if we're very good and very lucky) get put into level 3. That means we still can't leave our own council area. So yet more staying at home...well into May, and judging by previous experience, for as long as Nicola Sturgeon feels like.

I've endured this for a year. I've not seen my DS since August. We gave up Christmas. I've not had a night away since last summer. For the first time today I've cried about all this. I just can't do this anymore without at least the hope of being able to go somewhere, anywhere. I'm done. There's no point in keeping us physically alive if we have no life to live.

WouldBeGood · 23/02/2021 17:39

@Fortherosesjoni70 bollocks. There’s no evidence to support schools being closed

WannaCapybara · 23/02/2021 17:39

By cheerleaders I assume you mean people who are staying balanced and not getting hysterical about almost no difference between the English and Scottish plans.
kurtrussellsbeard · 23/02/2021 17:39

@WouldBeGood you tell him I'm sorry that you won't be back. It's really shit but hopefully it means you won't catch covid.

All kids back on the 8th of March is completely against the advice of his medical officers. It's risky according to them.

The English schools finishing a month later isn't an argument. We started a month earlier.

GoldenOmber · 23/02/2021 17:40

No other virus is in active pandemic mode and killing tens of thousands daily...

Ah right. So what we need, then, is some sort of vaccine that’ll stop it doing that. If only we had such a wondrous thing!

Fortherosesjoni70 · 23/02/2021 17:40

The UK Goverment are absolutely mad having schools back with a bang.
If you listened to indie sage, it was exactly why infections were SO high. When the infections were so high, mutations occurred. This could affect the efficacy of the vaccine. I don't know about you, but I do not wish to be thrown back to March last year.

Jellycatspyjamas · 23/02/2021 17:40

*My area had very low rates until recently and they’ve shot up recently to 65 per 100k. That’s about doubled.

Very dangerous time to be complacent.*

Seriously, you realise that’s less than 0.2% of the population - we’re keeping kids out of education, people out of work, seeing the economy collapse indefinitely for an infection rate of less than 0.2% of the population.

I’d wager there’s been a significantly higher increase in significant mental health issues, significantly more delays in healthcare, significantly higher levels of redundancy than 0.2%.

It is indeed a dangerous time to be complacent, but I suspect we mean for different reasons.

Scottishskifun · 23/02/2021 17:40

@kurtrussellsbeard yes I'm qualified in data analysis and used to deal with large datasets which fed into the ONS as a data project officer for 5 years before I switched sectors and jobs.
It's why I don't believe stats headlines but look at raw data tables. I know full well that changing a variable in statistical analysis can change the output.
