On Reporting Scotland just now they're saying that most hospital admissions for covid are in the 45-65 age group...are we going to have to wait until these groups are vaccinated also??

Question is why
  • variant hitting different people?
  • a lot of older people got it in wave 1 (especially in care homes) so have some degree of immunity?
  • sadly, many of the older cohort who were vulnerable to it may have already died from it?
  • more people in that age group not locking down as strictly
  • it spread through younger groups who in turn gave it to their parents so there's just a different composition?
  • better protection of elderly?
WaxOnFeckOff · 11/02/2021 19:25

and then we have the question of, because of covid, with covid or caught covid in hospital?

DD2 is doing N5 music and has broken a violin string Confused I’ve ordered one off Amazon and she is going to attempt to restring it herself , she was supposed to start online lessons last week she’s had no lessons for months, can’t even pay for private ones for her.

DD1s chemistry tutor had covid at Christmas too she was quite unwell and she’s young probably about 30. DD1 is missing her input too. She gets so anxious. DD3 is S1 and DS P6 and I’m not expecting the both of them back before Easter I’m hoping DD1 and 2 can get back a bit before then as I can really see the lack of school taking it’s toll on them. DD1 is withdrawn and anxious DD2 needs teachers to give her the kick up her backside to actually work.

On dentists we all haven’t seen one since 2019, DD2 was due to have an op to expose a tooth that refused to come through in April last year. Of course it was postponed. The tooth has just appeared in completely the wrong place Confused luckily we’ve been able to go to the orthodontist and he says maybe by next visit he will be able to hook a bracket on and guide it down. DD1 had her braces on an extra 9 months thanks to Covid too. I’m sure DD3 should have been referred by now too as her teeth are majorly wonky too (I will be on first name terms with all the staff at the orthodontists by the time the four of my children are some there).

I guess most 65+ have a degree of protection now and now those under 65 are still in the age group who have to go out to work in large numbers.

Plus the majority of that group is in the JCVI priority list so I'd say yes, we'll have to wait until most of that group (exc the 45-49 age group) are vaccinated, as has always been the case - I think it's always been the case anyway.

sweetkitty · 11/02/2021 19:36

Oh the thought of not even getting a weekend in Ayr all year is thoroughly depressing. I’d settle for a day out in Glasgow or Edinburgh right now.

rookiemere · 11/02/2021 19:42

I really wish I'd gone for a hotel for a night in our own area. I was going to do it before Christmas, but decided not to because we'd be staying in the Premier Inn when visiting relatives, which of course didn't happen.
Just the thrill of sleeping somewhere different on sheets I hadn't put on and wouldn't have to change, it does feel like we're never going to get that opportunity again, although realistically I know it can't be much further away than June.
I tell you if we are allowed to travel either within Scotland or UK this Summer I will be off like a rocket - or perhaps a rather fat tortoise- anyway I'll be there.

fluffyugg · 11/02/2021 19:45

Was that always the plan before we can ease restrictions? I thought it was the most vulnerable (70+ etc) that we were doing then opening schools/society

Coquohvan · 11/02/2021 19:55

It'll be all the oldies in person and the younger voters voting by post!
Out of interest what age would these oldies be?
We’ve always done postal votes since they came in, so much easier, now safer than in person voting. They were the downfall for Trump.
As far as holidays go it’s a guessing game. Having said that just booked a Forrest lodge with c/x insurance for June, we will move it if holidays are still off the cards.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 11/02/2021 20:00

I meant those over 65 and was obviously having a laugh.

I am not really sure @fluffyugg I think it's probably a gradual thing as you go through the groups? Not sure though. I guess though, there's no point in designating 9 groups as priority, and not keeping restrictions until they're all vaccinated.

Aurea · 11/02/2021 20:04

SWEETKITTY

YouTube has tutorials on how to restring a violin. You can also get tuner apps for your phone if she finds the tuning tricky by herself.

sweetkitty · 11/02/2021 20:05

One of my besties messaged me and asked what I was doing about Summer holidays this year (we reciprocate dog care so don’t book holidays before checking with one another lol) she was going to book a week in Cornwall end of June. She got to go to France last year though too (I’m jealous as we had to cancel) loads of people I know managed to sneak in a wee holiday last Summer too including a colleague who went to Tenerife just before they announced the quarantine, then came back and had to have time off work! I’ll admit I’m gutted as we delayed our holiday of a lifetime from 2019 to 2020 had it all planned and booked and it’s been cancelled twice now feels like we will never get to go. Some people just seem to go don’t they? I know what you mean about wanting a night away somewhere different anywhere

sweetkitty · 11/02/2021 20:05

@Aurea thanks we’re going to look on good old YouTube

NotAnActualSheep · 11/02/2021 20:09

The election thing is baffling. I know it has to go ahead, but why on earth not just make it fully postal and allow more time for counting etc. Or even, shock horror, try some online voting. It's not as if they haven't had time to work something out... It seems bonkers that at the moment we're not allowed to leave our homes, and that's likely to be the case for at least a few more weeks, and we can't book a wet weekend in Alloa for July, but somehow it'll be fine to have all the neighbourhood pass through a church hall, and enter an enclosed booth to mark your ballot with a shared pencil in early may... Really?! If they close schools for it, I'm going to explode. though that assumes they'll be open by May, which isn't necessarily a given

Cismyfatarse · 11/02/2021 20:16

My calendar this week has had jag (2nd dose in vaccine trial) and dentist on it.

Is it wrong that I now have the date of the election on there to give me something to look forward to?

You've gotta take the little joys where you can find them Smile

NotAnActualSheep · 11/02/2021 20:53

Ha! Yes, fair point! I'm wondering if I'm due a smear test, actually. That would be something to do to get out of the house too Grin

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 11/02/2021 21:18

Oh god I am due one but am pretending I'm not. Maybe my foof would love to see someone different too Grin

jabbathebutt · 11/02/2021 21:39

I used 'foof' for the first time in conversation yesterday and immediately DH said "stop reading mumsnet" Grin

Sweetpotatoaddict · 11/02/2021 21:53

I’m absolutely scunnered. People need to feel like there is some hope and some optimism. Leave people to book holidays if they like. All you hear on tv is covid covid covid.

titsbumfannythelot · 11/02/2021 22:27

😆😆 and also what were you discussing 🤔
WouldBeGood · 11/02/2021 23:05

@Sweetpotatoaddict pop over to my thread of doom 😃

Cismyfatarse · 11/02/2021 23:19

Ooh. Me too with the foof investigation. But I rang snd got shouted at (really angry woman) as "we are doing vaccinations".

Which is great but they had sent me a reminder which was quite firm about my need to attend because I had "ignored" a previous reminder. Which I hadn't.

My calendar is going to be packed I tell you.

I am due an eye test in April.

Oh happy days!

@Sweetpotatoaddict scunnered is one of my favourite words and just sums up exactly how I’m feeling I’m scunnered with everything right now, scunnered with all things covid

goodname · 12/02/2021 07:14

Scunnered is a very good word for just now. Just been off looking at holidays 😀. Booking.com was a good call from someone earlier on the thread. Mostly everything is fully cancelable but I can’t decide what to book.

There’s plenty of availability in England in the first week of the summer hols and I like English holidays in summer, loads to do and see, but I find my self scared to book and I’m not sure why. I seem to have developed not only a Fear of England but also a fear of the future. I think I can only cope with this by not thinking too much ahead as of this week!
Bit gutting as researching/booking holidays used to be my favourite thing

Considered a Scottish holiday too but everything is so expensive and the accommodation for the cost is pretty dire. I live in a fairly nice part of Scotland so would probably be better of staying at home
