Blended learning is very much a thing which has worked for tertiary and vocational learning for a very long time.

Wbeezer · 16/11/2020 22:17

We're having to mothball our business at the end of the month, cant get materials due to the container traffic jam at Felixstowe and also the customs uncertainty for exports so we have Brexit woes on top of Covid.
DS3 still off school being isolated, has been given very little to do and is not managing much off his own bat, not good without structure. His second attempt at National 5 Maths is going to be a casualty I fear. DH is being remarkably calm, I think he needs a rest after working 7 days a week for two years.

littlbrowndog · 16/11/2020 22:18

1/3 of our population to go into tier 4. FFS

littlbrowndog · 16/11/2020 22:18

And the carrot is Christmas

Happylittlethoughts · 16/11/2020 22:19

"Not teacher bashing, but it’s a fact that you can be more relaxed if you’re not going to have no income and lots of debt."

Relaxed? ! Show me a relaxed teacher just now! You clearly have no idea what schools are like just now . EIS will likely indicate strike, so yes teachers are sick of being put at risk for Childcare and are willing to lose pay.

WouldBeGood · 16/11/2020 22:19

It’s no good for a twelve year old boy at home with his mother.

It’s a stupid phrase cooked up to hide the fact it means homeschooling.

And @ssd it’s easy to be concerned about “safety” if you’re guaranteed pay no matter what. That’s exactly my point.

WouldBeGood · 16/11/2020 22:20

My child does t go to school fior childcare. 🙄

RJnomore1 · 16/11/2020 22:20

It’s shit for everyone isn’t it.

Wbeezer · 16/11/2020 22:20

@RJnomore1 Online college is certainly working well for DS1, he prefers it, one of the few good things to come out of this

WouldBeGood · 16/11/2020 22:21

If teachers vote to strike they will lose all public sympathy.

RJnomore1 · 16/11/2020 22:24

It’s not a stupid phrase cooled up for anything; it may be something secondary teachers need up skilled to deliver effectively but it’s a viable option and one which could improve the educational system for lots of kids.

It would half the number of pupils in school at any one time, making it safer.

We have totally screwed everyone over with this insistence on full time secondaries.

dementedpixie · 16/11/2020 22:24

I'm not sure our secondary school are set up for online learning. Dd already has an online class (AH English) with another school that she should have been going to in person and its all been a bit shit. The teacher isn't good with the technology and half the time speaks for 10 minutes then leaves dd to her own devices with the audio off and a blank screen. Meanwhile he can talk and interact with his own class at that school while she is left with nothing.

giggly · 16/11/2020 22:26

A friend of mine thought it was absolutely fine to travel from Lanarkshire to Wester Ross for a weekend away because they needed a break. FM can get a hammering for decisions but what about individual responsibility? I work in the NHS and prior to COVID we were all running on empty and now it’s like a tsunami of referrals. My colleagues and me are on our knees already so a lockdown will hopefully keep the worried well at bay for a bit. Gives a breather before the next onslaught in January.

Drawmelikeoneofyourfrenchgirls · 16/11/2020 22:26

I work in non essential retail, I’m so scared of what another lockdown will mean for business. We need a good Christmas period to try to make up for months of lost trade earlier in the year. I’m terrified I’m going to lose my job right before Christmas

ssd · 16/11/2020 22:26

I'd back striking teachers. They've been hung out to dry.

PurpleFrog · 16/11/2020 22:27

Fed-up in Fife...

Possums4evr · 16/11/2020 22:28

@WouldBeGood

If teachers vote to strike they will lose all public sympathy.
Rofl. Mumsnet taught me a long time ago that teachers have zero (well maybe 0.5%) of public sympathy. Nothing to lose.
littlbrowndog · 16/11/2020 22:28

It’s not childcare. It’s education.

We have known about this since March

Surely our SG could have spent some time thinking about this ?

We have rising violence in homes which will always affect children

We have rising child sex abuse according to police Scotland

Home is not always a safe place for children

Schoolis important not just for education.

MissEliza · 16/11/2020 22:30

@Lidlfix I work in a school too and I'm amazed at how exhausting the constant vigilance is.

littlbrowndog · 16/11/2020 22:33

Not every family can afford the devices needed for online learning. And the cost of WiFi

We really can’t. So the poorer kids will suffer.

Missushbb · 16/11/2020 22:35

Childcare, that's incredibly insulting. Children need education, schools shouldn't close. Childcare is the least of it:

littlbrowndog · 16/11/2020 22:40

But anyway to cheer us up

Yes sir I can boogie. 😂😂💪

RJnomore1 · 16/11/2020 22:40

And for a fraction of the lockdown costs they could provide every child with a device and connection🤷🏻‍♀️

My point is very much about secondaries so not childcare and still allowed schools to be open, potentially full time for the most vulnerable (as the original hubs were meant to offer through lockdown)

The increased stress of losing jobs and he impact of throwing families into poverty will have a horrific effect on children.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/11/2020 22:43

Arsed in Aberdeen checking in.

Justmuddlingalong · 16/11/2020 22:49

Fat arsed and fatigued in Fife.
