SIL Xmas gifts - disturbing epiphany

NC’d bc previous threads would make this outing.

As it’s approaching the festive season I’d like to ask for advice please. I’ve been with DP well over a decade. Every year his sister gives me some vaguely weird or semi-unsuitable type of present. It’s not that they’re horrible, just a strange choice I guess.

Apart from a few instances they have generally been toiletry based. One year she gave me a massive gift box of body shop stuff all in one scent. It wasn’t awful, but as I said to my partner - what if I hadn’t liked it? I’d never mentioned liking it to her and she’d never asked. Surely you’d put the feelers out before choosing a specific thing like that?

There’s been other similar stuff, usually from somewhere ok, like joules or next, but to me, toiletries is a risky, cop out gift generally unless you know exactly what the recipient likes, as it’s subjective while also requiring very little thought usually.

For years I’ve asked for vouchers which have been agreed on, then she’ll get me something completely left field - like recently, tickets to a family theatre trip in 6 months time - it actually clashed with my nephew’s bday but she hadn’t even bothered to check to see whether we could do the date. Needless to say we’ve always bought her and her partner exactly what they’ve asked for. I’ve said we should but partner doesn’t want to rock the boat.

We have a set budget which encompasses bdays as well as xmas. I struggle to find a specific thing I like for this amount but last year I found 2 items from a shop I like which were low in stock. I’ve asked for things in the past for our children’s presents which haven’t been bought in time so I decided to buy them myself before they were sold out. I messaged to say I’d done this and did she want to give them to me as a present? (she’d asked what I wanted). I even offered to send them with her parents for her to wrap and send back with them if she wanted to do that (I know this sounds weird but I guess it’s the same as sending them to her address after ordering them) - I stressed that obv this wasn’t necessary, i could wrap them myself and put with the other family presents (she can be funny about the whole process of gifting and I don’t want to offend). I pointed out it was one less thing for her to worry about as she’s usually very busy.

At first she was fine with this. Then a few days later she text to say that actually she wasn’t, that part of the enjoyment for her especially at xmas was thinking about family and what they’d want and getting this etc and that it was nice to be surprised…. This after years of telling us exactly what she, partner and kids wanted and us complying. Confusing but hey ho. What was also weird was that I always put a lot of thought into gifts for everyone. If she gave me a generic item I’d try and get an interesting version of it, which she’d loved (genuinely). And when this happened, some years she’s got me a token bday present - which is weird bc these xmas gifts are meant to include them (my bday is a couple of weeks after xmas).

Anyway, I had a somewhat disconcerting epiphany last year which upset me at the thought of ‘wow this is such CF’ery I can’t believe it’s true’, while at the same time, ‘of course it’s true - how could I possibly have not seen it before?!!!’

We receive our presents AFTER xmas, when the in-laws retune from their visit to her.

When I say…… she’s a teacher……..

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To state the bleeding obvious - am I the only one thinking she’s been re-gifting me presents her students have been giving her for the last 15 years??????!

How would you feel if this was you and what would you do for this xmas? It may not be true, but it is isn’t it.

Either match her energy (lower your spend and buy more random things) or insist you're stopping buying adult gifts from next year. She can't make you buy anything. This will just continue until you take a stand.

Wise words. You may be right there. I guess saying what you want leaves less chance of getting something you don’t. We don’t see them often enough for me to know exactly what they’re currently into. But as what we say generally falls on deaf ears I may say we really need to think of the planet and avoid the faff this year.

It's a fine line between making sure one doesn't get something they don't want and becoming Santa, hope you resolve this but if they don't care about what you want why would you?

I thought 'she's regifting' as soon as I read about the Body Shop box. I don't know what you can do about it though. DH's relations once gave me a tiny set of windchimes. I loathe them. My presents to them had been chosen from the list they gave me, involving time, effort and money. DH had a word!

Why would DH have to ‘have a word’ and what did he say? “Hey, Muddy loathed the tiny chime bells you gave her when she bought you a gift that involved time effort and money; don’t do it again”

I’m ND and it’s the disparity in fairness that pisses me off I must admit.

I’m sorry but your idea of what gifts are about is very transactional. You seem to think gifts are about getting exactly what the other person wants for a set amount of money - why not just buy it yourself?!

In this particular instance the SIL is sending a message that she doesnt care whether OP likes the gift or not. Mabye its about feelings?

itsgettingatadchill · Yesterday 06:48

Just stop buying her what she asks for, lower the amount and buy her a token gift.

SamPoodle123 · Yesterday 06:49

Pupils don't give teachers gifts like that. Everyone puts money in a pot for a voucher for the teacher....this way they can get what they want.

How sad that you’re so disparaging of gifts that other people give you. You’re treating it as a financial transaction!
I would be pleased with any gift my SIL gave me, we’ve never discussed what we would like, it’s always been a nice surprise. We’ve also never discussed cost - that’s just so vulgar!

Vulgar? What century are you from? 😆

If you’d read my posts you’d see that the transactional take is skewed to one side and it isn’t mine!

Thanks for posting 💝

Thank god we stopped all this gifting for the entire family years ago. We buy for our daughter (25) and that’s it. We concentrate on all being together and having a lovely time. Everyone else is happy with that too.

I have many teacher friends - of course ppl buy them individual gifts!

she may be regifting but I doubt it’s from students. The most students gave teachers in my school was some chocolate or biscuits for the staff room.

toiletries are a very standard gift.

Stopping the gifting, or at least sticking to a plan would be my preference too

This would be the adult NT method. I’m ND and it’s the disparity in fairness that pisses me off I must admit. I don’t mind not doing presents, or setting the limit to below a tenner. But for us to spend £80+ on her and her husband and her pretend to do the same when we’re not well-off is shitty behaviour. My partner will pay it bc he’s a good man and doesn’t want to upset anyone but I’m annoyed for him, and if she is literally sending over some student cast offs she doesn’t want and I’ve not asked for I will admit at being hurt that she hasn’t bothered to make more of an effort, petty as that sounds. To tell her directly - please stop sending toiletries (or generic teacher gifts) over is a difficult conversation to have.

She probably doesn’t like you. OR, maybe she has handed all the gift buying to her DH instead and he’s the one getting you the ‘shitty’ gifts? You really are making a whole unnecessary issue out of this - leave it to your DH to decide what he wants to buy!

It depends on the school I guess. They may well be end of year presents she has a box of in her garage!

Well, the schools my dc go to they set up pots and people don't just give random gifts. They understand how much more useful it is for a teacher to get things they want instead of random bunch of junk. I have 3 dc and my eldest is 14 and this has been the case in the schools they have been to (4 different ones). But perhaps its around where we live.

SulkySeagull · Yesterday 06:56

But how would the theatre tickets be a regift? Surely she would have to tell the person who bought them for her whether she saw the show or not? Also, on the toiletries/body shop thing - that’s a very standard gift and why the body shop have gift sets.

There seems to be way too much energy going into this. Say you don’t want to spend as much, or start giving back a similar standard of gift. Or accept that things won’t change and there’s not much that can be done about it!

You’ve misquoted me, I never called them shitty gifts, I said her behaviour was shitty. She expects gifts of £40+ but doesn’t reciprocate. I’m more than happy to cut the stress out of my life believe me

What century are YOU from? Giving gifts is supposed to be an unselfish act, spontaneous and thoughtful, but so is the receiving of them. Honestly, you’re complaining like a sulking teenager comparing how much their parents have spent on them.
All you need to do this year is say that due to the COL crisis, you’ll only be buying token gifts and will be happy to receive similar. Suggest a challenge maybe - the funniest gift for under £10, or a theme - eg books. Or even just donations to a local charity!

Theatre tix were not a regift (as far as I know!) but an example of the weird gifts I mentioned in my OP

For a very long time I have approached gift giving and receiving in a particular way (born of various work settings including offices and schools) and that is never give a gift with expectation of what you might receive in return - 9 times out of 10 you’d only be disappointed. Give each person what you want to give them and find a way to appreciate whatever they choose to gift you- btw I think you are right about your SIL though

Token gifts are a waste and bad for the planet so will not be asking for things we don’t need, thanks for the suggestion tho 😘

Why do adults still buy each other presents?

Ginandtonicolic · Yesterday 07:06

Your sil sounds very grabby and selfish. I would back out of the arrangement especially if you can't really afford the expensive gifts she asks for. She sounds mean and it would annoy me too op.

Tiddlywinkly · Yesterday 07:08

I'm ND and 100% with you. I think the only way is to announce you aren't giving adult presents and don't expect any in return. Hopefully it's early enough. This way, it cuts down on the waste. Spend the saved money on what you want.

DierdreDaphne · Yesterday 07:09

Finallyseenthelights · Yesterday 05:52

The thing is - she IS telling us what to get her, and her entire family, which we do bc she says she will do the same. She rarely, if ever does.

Well don't do it any more, obviously. There's not much they can say is there? And if they dosay anything just airily say "oh I thought we weren't spending that much " and look pointedly at the random shit theu have cone up with for you.
