SIL Xmas gifts - disturbing epiphany

NC’d bc previous threads would make this outing.

As it’s approaching the festive season I’d like to ask for advice please. I’ve been with DP well over a decade. Every year his sister gives me some vaguely weird or semi-unsuitable type of present. It’s not that they’re horrible, just a strange choice I guess.

Apart from a few instances they have generally been toiletry based. One year she gave me a massive gift box of body shop stuff all in one scent. It wasn’t awful, but as I said to my partner - what if I hadn’t liked it? I’d never mentioned liking it to her and she’d never asked. Surely you’d put the feelers out before choosing a specific thing like that?

There’s been other similar stuff, usually from somewhere ok, like joules or next, but to me, toiletries is a risky, cop out gift generally unless you know exactly what the recipient likes, as it’s subjective while also requiring very little thought usually.

For years I’ve asked for vouchers which have been agreed on, then she’ll get me something completely left field - like recently, tickets to a family theatre trip in 6 months time - it actually clashed with my nephew’s bday but she hadn’t even bothered to check to see whether we could do the date. Needless to say we’ve always bought her and her partner exactly what they’ve asked for. I’ve said we should but partner doesn’t want to rock the boat.

We have a set budget which encompasses bdays as well as xmas. I struggle to find a specific thing I like for this amount but last year I found 2 items from a shop I like which were low in stock. I’ve asked for things in the past for our children’s presents which haven’t been bought in time so I decided to buy them myself before they were sold out. I messaged to say I’d done this and did she want to give them to me as a present? (she’d asked what I wanted). I even offered to send them with her parents for her to wrap and send back with them if she wanted to do that (I know this sounds weird but I guess it’s the same as sending them to her address after ordering them) - I stressed that obv this wasn’t necessary, i could wrap them myself and put with the other family presents (she can be funny about the whole process of gifting and I don’t want to offend). I pointed out it was one less thing for her to worry about as she’s usually very busy.

At first she was fine with this. Then a few days later she text to say that actually she wasn’t, that part of the enjoyment for her especially at xmas was thinking about family and what they’d want and getting this etc and that it was nice to be surprised…. This after years of telling us exactly what she, partner and kids wanted and us complying. Confusing but hey ho. What was also weird was that I always put a lot of thought into gifts for everyone. If she gave me a generic item I’d try and get an interesting version of it, which she’d loved (genuinely). And when this happened, some years she’s got me a token bday present - which is weird bc these xmas gifts are meant to include them (my bday is a couple of weeks after xmas).

Anyway, I had a somewhat disconcerting epiphany last year which upset me at the thought of ‘wow this is such CF’ery I can’t believe it’s true’, while at the same time, ‘of course it’s true - how could I possibly have not seen it before?!!!’

We receive our presents AFTER xmas, when the in-laws retune from their visit to her.

When I say…… she’s a teacher……..

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To state the bleeding obvious - am I the only one thinking she’s been re-gifting me presents her students have been giving her for the last 15 years??????!

How would you feel if this was you and what would you do for this xmas? It may not be true, but it is isn’t it.

One of my friends regifted my Christmas present to her, back to me for my birthday🙄careful if you are a regifter, remember who bought you what. This year I have suggested we stop exchanging Christmas gifts because we all have enough 'stuff'

Almost feels like we have the same SIL, except mine isn't a teacher!.
I've received 2 large bottles of bubble bath at 9 months pregnant when I had no hope of getting in and out of a bath and which were on 2 for 1 offer. I hate baths and always have a shower.
One year she spent a grand total of £18 between me and my daughter, a cookbook for me and a cheap imitation My Little Pony for my daughter who barely played with it as the hair matted as soon as it was plaited. In return over the years she has asked for Smiggle stationery sets and lunchboxes, games for the Switch and branded sportswear.
One year she bought me & DH a bottle of Archers for Xmas which neither of us drink and when she was next at ours and we offered a drink she asked for Archers!! I think we ended up giving her the bottle to take home with her.
We've also had regifts or xmas gift sets presumably bought in the sales and gifted for summer birthdays.
I love buying gifts for my niece & nephew but there's a big disparity on spend and expectation so I completely get where you are coming from OP.

Tuesdayschild50 · Yesterday 19:06

Ignore what she asks for ... just do the same or stop entirely.

Socksey · Yesterday 19:14

Buy them all some generic random stuff and if she questions it then say that after so many years of her doing it, that you assumed thats what she actually wanted

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · Yesterday 19:35

Finallyseenthelights · Yesterday 05:52

The thing is - she IS telling us what to get her, and her entire family, which we do bc she says she will do the same. She rarely, if ever does.

Say that to her then. Why hide behind faux politeness, when you feel she's treating you with contempt and you resent it?

Life is too short for all of this.

Lower your expectations of her presents and match her energy and be prepared to take the presents you don't like straight to the charity shop.
or TELL them, don't suggest, that this year you are only limiting spending to xx on presents this year or you can all just give gifts to the children. Let them come back with any arguement they like, just say, that may be, but this year I will be doing xy and z - And stick to it.

The year we all decided to just buy presents for the children was a MASSIVE relief, all that time, energy, effort saved.

Pupils don't give teachers gifts like that. Everyone puts money in a pot for a voucher for the teacher....this way they can get what they want.

That’s exactly what pupils give teachers! Probably regifted to them! I have never given money for a collective Christmas gift, nor received one.

Gobbledegoo · Yesterday 19:54

Have you still got the gift she gave you last year? If so wrap it up and give it to her this year! If not keep the gift from this year and give it to her next year! Simple.

Oh wow. Where we live (and my kids are at 3 different schools) every year they do collection pot for xmas and end of year! This is so much better I think, as relieves me for thinking of what to get and the teacher can buy something useful...instead of getting a bunch of things they might not like (like choclates, mugs, lotions, soaps etc)...of course its nice perhaps to get one of each...but if people are buying the same things then its not great.

OneNewEagle · Yesterday 20:49

I think she’s buying them in the Boxing Day sales.

I also think a body shop set would be fine, I get given truly awful stuff. I have had enough of I’m the only one making an effort . I’ve got all mine done now wrapped ready to post . I’m giving boots style gifts or toiletries to everyone this year, I’d be happy with any of it. I dread to think why I will actually receive, if anything.

from now on just give what you want to give they don’t get to dictate. And I hope this year you get yours on time and it’s something you like.

listentoheart · Yesterday 21:50

I have never read a post more obsessive about anything. In the first place - even if you do not celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday you should do so with a bit of class. Do you complain this much about everything OR is this the only thing about your SIL that you can find to complain about since you obviously do not like her. Your family would benefit tremendously from a "no gifts" Christmas and then you could determine if you want to spend any of it with each other!!!!

Literally I would just regift her the next year what she regifted you this year for a laugh 😆 see if she dares say anything.

If she says anything just say you didn’t get me that last year you got me “say the gift you asked for” just like we got you what you asked for didn’t you? And look confused.. If she says no I got you this just say ah well sorry you can always regift it to someone else if that isn’t what you wanted. Just sit and grin at her, let her know she’s a CF and you know she is. If she doesn’t have the money to match she should just agree to lower the spend or agree to not buy for adults. She makes zero effort yet expects you guys to spend a fortune on them. What does your parents think? Or in laws I should say

Ilovelifeverymuch · Yesterday 23:08

Finallyseenthelights · Yesterday 05:51

The thing is we have absolutely no problem not doing adult gifts, or lowering the amount- she doesn’t want to. So we spend £80 on her and her husband and they spend £40 max on the pair of us - how is that fair?

And you can use your words and say we're not doing adult gifts this year simple. Don't make it a question or open it up for debate, make it a statement and stand by it.

Extrachoc · Today 00:07

Completely agree with you, OP!!

It’s not right what she is doing and I’m sure all the posters saying you’re ungrateful etc, would get miffed after years of receiving random, low-cost gifts from someone who ignores what you request, yet expects exactly what they want.

I’d be bowing out and saying kids only.

This has just given me a bad taste in my mouth. You sound unbelievably entitled.

seahorsessky · Today 01:14

I'd agree with posters saying it's fine and not to worry about it, and maybe she's poor, but it is cheeky of she demands you get specific things. Also don't think you should leave it to your husband-it's your money too, presumably, and if you choose to organise gifts, it's silly to change to get him to do it just for her.
I'd just be firm and say from now on, we'll choose, and change the spending amount. You can clearly say, why should you get to tell us what to buy, when you don't get us anything specific?

DrFoxtrot · Today 03:15

I agree with PP regarding matching her off piste gift giving. Don’t go off her list and reduce the budget.

However, I don’t think the examples you’ve given for her gifts are weird. The theatre tickets sound good and I would never consider whether a nephew’s birthday would clash when buying tickets Confused. Major date clashes such as immediate family birthdays and anniversaries I would think about, but that’s the extent.

Perhaps your black and white thinking means that these gifts do not suit you but they will suit a lot of people and it might be worth explaining to her why. A gift that requires planning, such as tickets, would not work for you if you have to consider every eventuality or tiny potential clash, but she won’t know this as I don’t think it’s a particularly common way of thinking.

This Christmas please get her present second hand on vinted or a knock off of whatever she wants 😆

I think I need to empathise, I’m not the one who came up with ‘the rules’ and is being controlling over the situation. I’m happy not to do it at all. But if there are rules they should be followed by everyone if that’s the expectation.

So buy her a nice toiletry set (that she didn’t ask for).
