SIL Xmas gifts - disturbing epiphany

Finallyseenthelights · Yesterday 05:20

NC’d bc previous threads would make this outing.

As it’s approaching the festive season I’d like to ask for advice please. I’ve been with DP well over a decade. Every year his sister gives me some vaguely weird or semi-unsuitable type of present. It’s not that they’re horrible, just a strange choice I guess.

Apart from a few instances they have generally been toiletry based. One year she gave me a massive gift box of body shop stuff all in one scent. It wasn’t awful, but as I said to my partner - what if I hadn’t liked it? I’d never mentioned liking it to her and she’d never asked. Surely you’d put the feelers out before choosing a specific thing like that?

There’s been other similar stuff, usually from somewhere ok, like joules or next, but to me, toiletries is a risky, cop out gift generally unless you know exactly what the recipient likes, as it’s subjective while also requiring very little thought usually.

For years I’ve asked for vouchers which have been agreed on, then she’ll get me something completely left field - like recently, tickets to a family theatre trip in 6 months time - it actually clashed with my nephew’s bday but she hadn’t even bothered to check to see whether we could do the date. Needless to say we’ve always bought her and her partner exactly what they’ve asked for. I’ve said we should but partner doesn’t want to rock the boat.

We have a set budget which encompasses bdays as well as xmas. I struggle to find a specific thing I like for this amount but last year I found 2 items from a shop I like which were low in stock. I’ve asked for things in the past for our children’s presents which haven’t been bought in time so I decided to buy them myself before they were sold out. I messaged to say I’d done this and did she want to give them to me as a present? (she’d asked what I wanted). I even offered to send them with her parents for her to wrap and send back with them if she wanted to do that (I know this sounds weird but I guess it’s the same as sending them to her address after ordering them) - I stressed that obv this wasn’t necessary, i could wrap them myself and put with the other family presents (she can be funny about the whole process of gifting and I don’t want to offend). I pointed out it was one less thing for her to worry about as she’s usually very busy.

At first she was fine with this. Then a few days later she text to say that actually she wasn’t, that part of the enjoyment for her especially at xmas was thinking about family and what they’d want and getting this etc and that it was nice to be surprised…. This after years of telling us exactly what she, partner and kids wanted and us complying. Confusing but hey ho. What was also weird was that I always put a lot of thought into gifts for everyone. If she gave me a generic item I’d try and get an interesting version of it, which she’d loved (genuinely). And when this happened, some years she’s got me a token bday present - which is weird bc these xmas gifts are meant to include them (my bday is a couple of weeks after xmas).

Anyway, I had a somewhat disconcerting epiphany last year which upset me at the thought of ‘wow this is such CF’ery I can’t believe it’s true’, while at the same time, ‘of course it’s true - how could I possibly have not seen it before?!!!’

We receive our presents AFTER xmas, when the in-laws retune from their visit to her.

When I say…… she’s a teacher……..

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To state the bleeding obvious - am I the only one thinking she’s been re-gifting me presents her students have been giving her for the last 15 years??????!

How would you feel if this was you and what would you do for this xmas? It may not be true, but it is isn’t it.

Why not give and take, without demands, as the season is intended or skip it altogether? Seems very childish to be so controlling about gift giving/receiving.

Seems we've forgotten what the holiday is about and made it into something horrible and petty.

Why are you taking on board what they want? How is it a gift if it's literally like you're a free mail order retailer? Only kids get to write a letter to Santa usually 😂 just find free stuff somewhere and gift that if that's what they're doing anyway. The fault here lies with your choice of pandering to their whims and fancies

Wise words. You may be right there. I guess saying what you want leaves less chance of getting something you don’t. We don’t see them often enough for me to know exactly what they’re currently into. But as what we say generally falls on deaf ears I may say we really need to think of the planet and avoid the faff this year.

I’m ND and it’s the disparity in fairness that pisses me off I must admit.

I’m sorry but your idea of what gifts are about is very transactional. You seem to think gifts are about getting exactly what the other person wants for a set amount of money - why not just buy it yourself?!

I think I need to empathise, I’m not the one who came up with ‘the rules’ and is being controlling over the situation. I’m happy not to do it at all. But if there are rules they should be followed by everyone if that’s the expectation.

Well, how about make new rules and opt out because it's spiralling into something toxic. You don't have to play the game.

My DP’s sister does this too!!

I don’t mind so much for myself - I’m always happy with nice toiletries. But other gifts she’s given over the years include:

— books that her mum has given her (which she’s then wrapped up and given back for Xmas, complete with coffee rings and water damage…)

— a bottle of gin to my partner, who hates gin. She’s never seen him drink gin

— out of date chocolates

And the things on her list include furry notebooks, clothes that would be too small for her, and other stuff that seems more suitable for kids and teens. We reckon she’s hoping to regift our presents to her friends’ kids. She’s an odd person.

Smeegall · Yesterday 06:27

I'm laughing at you've offered to send her the gift to give you...

This is all madness!

Some people are good at buying gifts and others aren’t. You sound rather spiteful and mean. Sorry, but you’re not owed gifts. You’re lucky (as anyone is) to receive them at all. Even if she is regifting… so what?

Also I don’t buy the line some ppl are good at buying gifts and some ppl aren’t crap. If the recipient is important to that person, like a boss or someone they want to sleep
with or impress they’re not going to get them shite. If it’s someone you genuinely care about on any level you think about what they’re currently into or like and buy accordingly, not re-gift (unless that’s been agreed) or buy some arbitrary tat on the way to the checkout.

But you don’t need to think of exactly what they’re into. Gifts are pot luck - sometimes we like them, sometimes we don’t and that’s fine. If surprises are outside your comfort zone - let your DH do the gift buying and giving.

FannyCradocksDoughnut · Yesterday 06:30

You should select something from the reduced section of your local charity shop for her present this year 😂

Alltheusefulitems · Yesterday 05:45

Honestly I wouldn't think anything of it but then I also wouldn't think twice about giving my SIL a bodyshop basket of the same scented products 😬

Same, I had no idea this was some sort of faux pas lol

moose62 · Yesterday 06:32

I get why it is disappointing when you make the effort and they don't.
Tell your DH that you are going 'off piste' this year and buy them something random that you like but they have not asked for.
If he disagrees, leave the present buying for them up to him. Then you can't get annoyed by spending time and energy on them, because you haven't.
Alternatively, let them know that due to time and cost of living, you won't be doing sibling presents this year and don't expect to receive any either.

Who on earth is buying their boss a gift?

I think you just massively overthink gifts, to be honest.

Thank you for your non-judgemental response! I thought I’d get a few ignore/ be grateful for anything… but it’s like I’ve posted on the AIBU board!

Your SIL sounds bizarre and it would turn into a competition of who could get the most bizarre gift without the recipient breaking and saying “seriously, WTAF?!” 🤣

Just follow her lead, buy basic gifts or vouchers. Gift giving is a conversation, you have to listen - to the reality of what you’re given - and respond.

She sees buying for you as a duty to be discharged. That is all. No thought, no pleasure.

Toiletries are a crap gift for adults, I agree. I’d be playing the school tombola game and re-gifting them in that direction.

Does she do better with your DH?

It was an example of ppl who are accepted to be important in someone’s life, not literal. Although some ppl have done this in small businesses etc.

I thought 'she's regifting' as soon as I read about the Body Shop box. I don't know what you can do about it though. DH's relations once gave me a tiny set of windchimes. I loathe them. My presents to them had been chosen from the list they gave me, involving time, effort and money. DH had a word!

Thanks. He is generally either hyper specific or doesn’t care and she loves him to bits. We’ve got a much better relationship over the last few years and of course I’m not expecting her to spend half a day mulling over gift options, but I put thought into what I get people, especially family and close friends and I guess it hurt when I realised the teacher present re-gifting was a very likely scenario. If she was blasé about what we got her I guess it’d be different, but she’s very specific as in clothing items from specific shops when it comes to herself.

OP posts:
NorwegianForest · Yesterday 06:41

Lots of people regift and I don't have a problem with that, but it's cheeky to ask family members to spend a lot on you. Just have a chat with DH and suggest lowering the budget for presents.

TheAmberKoala · Yesterday 06:44

cannynotsay · Yesterday 05:37

She’s regifting isn’t she that was my first thought. Also she maybe doesn’t have the money. Be kind. Accords the gift and move on.

Yeah, its pretty rude of SIL to ignore OPs suggestions but make requests of her own.
Regifting is fine if its something the person would actually like.

I like the competition idea 😂 Maybe this year I’ll get her a pack of y-fronts or some
cat food (she doesn’t have a cat)

Thank you for understanding. Small windchimes? That’s unique!

Thats great your DH had a word. Ironically my partner was getting fed up with the tat my brother was gifting him and despite receiving nice presents myself I suggested we maybe did vouchers or something and we’ve stopped getting gifts now . I felt guilty both ways but I felt I needed to say something. Frustratingly my partner won’t dream of saying anything to his sister. I have said to her more than once we should probably drop adult gifts bc it’s added jobs at a busy time but she won’t hear of it. It makes sense now.

The thing is we have absolutely no problem not doing adult gifts, or lowering the amount- she doesn’t want to. So we spend £80 on her and her husband and they spend £40 max on the pair of us - how is that fair?

How sad that you’re so disparaging of gifts that other people give you. You’re treating it as a financial transaction!
I would be pleased with any gift my SIL gave me, we’ve never discussed what we would like, it’s always been a nice surprise. We’ve also never discussed cost - that’s just so vulgar!
