The Dating Thread 64 - the leaves are falling, and so are the irons (at our feet, hopefully, and not gently binwards....)

The Rules:
-The first rule about the dating thread is don't talk about it with people you're dating
-Develop a thick skin
-Do not invest emotionally too soon
-It’s all BS until it actually happens
-Trust your gut instinct
-People vanishing, lying & being generally weird is not your fault
-Know your worth
-If it's not fun, stop
-Loo update is mandatory
-No dating the thread
-Treat others as you'd like to be treated
-Any relationship you have that could get ruined by having a conversation about your feelings, standards and/or expectations wasn't really stable enough to begin with
-The things you choose to ignore/ tolerate now are the reasons you will break up in the future
If you're wondering if you're being too picky/should give another chance after the second chance/should try harder - the answer is invariably NO! You're not and you shouldn't. If this, now, is as good as it's going to get, the A game, then do you want what comes next?!
-OLD can get very time consuming. Keep doing other activities you enjoy!

  • Be massively proud of yourself! Every boundary you put in place, big or small; every single iron you swipe left on, whatever your reasoning; every first date or fifteenth date you decide against pursuing..... These are all signs of how much you have learned to respect yourself, how far you have come, how you have finally realised that actually, remaining single a bit longer is hugely preferable to being with a partner who does not make you feel good about yourself. We all still make mistakes or errors of judgement occasionally - we are all still growing and learning - but every time you feel frustrated, just look at how far you have come, and how amazing you really are!

Optional: Please give your irons (potential dates you are talking to) nicknames like Mr Scottish. Initials are allowed (Mr S) when you are an item*

@ChocolatefreakHe messaged last night to say he got home and thanks then this morning good morning. :) It's the level of respect which is refreshing and a good check in with me regarding my boundaries. After feeling rubbish for years I was very suseptible to attention :(

This sounds wonderful - I am quite jealous! 🤣

And it's no more than you deserve! Xxx

I am 57 too.

I was on this thread 2 years ago, dated for a few months, then met a lovely man my age on Tinder. Just knew he was special almost straight away. He's turned out to be a great cook, initially respectful but great in bed, has a good job, an established friendship group, his own lovely place, likes film, cinema and gigs, enjoys travel, walks in the countryside and cosy pubs. He's faithful and consistent, I've not doubted him for a moment.

We've been happily together ever since. So they are out there. It's just sifting through.

This is wonderful news. It's great to get positive stories - it helps keep the faith.

He’s just sent me a run of messages saying he doesn’t know he stands and basically saying I’m inconsistent. Well this has made me mad. So I’ve sent him a run of messages back. I know I shouldn’t have. Just correcting him, that was this morning.snd he’s ignoring me now. Idiot.

He sounds like an absolutely fucking cock. I totally understand the desire to have your say, but don't let the wanker unsettle your peace. It's probably best to block and delete now (though I totally understand the temptation to tell him what you think of him).

How nice to encounter someone polite and respectful. You deserve it!

Mr College, with whom I have a coffee date on Tuesday, has just revealed the reddest of red flags. I asked him how long he had been single - and it turns out he isn't!

He is married. He claims to be "in an open relationship". What this actually looks like is, his poor wife is older than him and disabled, and they have adopted a child who struggles to sleep alone, so they basically never have sex and his wife doesn't really want to (don't blame her - he is a knob) and has apparently told him he is free to do what he likes but she doesn't want to hear about it.

I'd like to bet that, if this conversation happened at all, she just said it once when she was totally pissed off with him banging on about sex, and he has taken this as carte blanche to cheat and not tell her.

I asked him if he would be happy with her shagging other people, and he clearly just cannot imagine the situation of her wanting another man over him ever possibly occurring......

I am staggered how:
A) he thinks this is an OK way to treat the wife he is supposed to love.
B) what the fuck does he imagine would be in this for me?

He's not even that hot!!!!! But he could be hotter than the sun, and I wouldn't touch him with someone else's.....

Now, don't get me wrong, I understand that mismatching libidos can be really difficult, and I totally see why someone might not want to never have sex again, just because their partner doesn't want it.

But Jesus, this bullshit is not the answer!

I actually feel quite furious on her behalf. And on behalf of all women dealing with this degree of male entitlement.

ARGH!

OMG, how awful for his wife and kid, but well swerved. At least you found out before you met him.

You said it - the entitlement of some men is just incredible sometimes.

Thiswillbefun · 25/10/2026 14:33

@Chocolatefreak@IlovelurchersThese men are shocking! I have most the most soul destroying men... let's hope this one is real 🤣 Looking back I can't believe what I thought was acceptable. It makes me feel sad for previous me!

That's disgusting! And quite apart from his poor wife, what about you! What a waste of your time xxx

ThreeMogsAndCounting · 25/10/2026 15:04

I usednto be in an ENM relationship (non monogamous) and the number of creeps who were cheating and calling it an open relationship was just disgusting.. it is not at all the same thing and it says so much about the person in question- none of it good.

Kaltenzahn · 25/10/2026 16:23

@Ilovelurchers oh my god what a shit! I'm so glad you found out now before wasting your time meeting the horrible man. In the bin he goes!

(I'm still hoping Mr Paint turns out to be a good egg!)

God I miss sex. And kissing. And feeling desired.
I am vaguely considering going back on the apps but honestly I don't even know when I'd find time to organise a date.

What do you think? Apps tonight - yes/no?

Thiswillbefun · 25/10/2026 17:58

@ThreeMogsAndCountingyes yes yes 😂

Fine. Done some random swiping.

Does anyone else find it a instant ock when they're whingeing about dating apps on the dating app?

Thiswillbefun · 25/10/2026 18:47

I suspect Mr visit within an hour was just after a shag 😁

I hadn’t even considered that 😂 Makes sense now

mbonfield · 25/10/2026 04:26

@CleverOpalBalonz To try and avoid future complications maybe an idea to limit dates to those that live closer to you.

I’d set my limit at 20 miles - an hours drive where I am but I may reduce it. I set it at that mainly to include the nearby city.

Ugh!!! That’s disgusting. Good job you asked. See I haven’t asked the fella who’s asked me out, let’s call him Mr Hill, how long he’s been single. But his profile didn’t mention children, as in that bit wasn’t visible, he then mentioned kids so I asked about them and his youngest is 6. I’m really not interested in getting involved with anyone with young kids. Mine are teens and I’m loving the dynamics that brings. So I’m thinking of not going for drinks anyway.
