Did I ruin this, or was his situation too complicated anyway?

I started talking to a guy my age (both of us 42) who was training to be a psychotherapist and completing a doctorate. We had some amazing deep conversations over text, voice notes and phone. It was honestly refreshing not to be doing all the usual small talk and he never tried to do what a lot do and talk about what I like in bed etc All in we talked for a week and a half.

He was upfront the first day that 6 months ago he ended a 14 year relationship that had become like a friendship e.g. they hadn’t had sex in a lot of year, slept in separate rooms etc. He had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before. He said he would have very limited time if we dated as his course was so intense and he was doing an uber delivery job around this to try and get money to live basically and pay for an expensive course. He said we would maybe see each other once or twice a month only. He also said he wouldn’t have much money to take me out much but I’ve had to pay in relationships before when I’ve had more money and I thought it was a green flag he was being upfront. I figured as well it would be better to have someone I click with amazingly and only see him once or twice a month than a lesser connection so we both said we would meet and just feel our way with things.

Maybe mid way through the week and a half he disclosed he still lived with his ex. As I said in the last paragraph he had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before and she had said she would honor that and let him live rent free with her (the mortgage was just in her name for some reason it had never been his house though he had paid towards bills etc). He said that she didn’t allow him to bring any women to the house since it was hers and she wanted to protect her space. Problem with that is I only broke up with my ex 6 months ago too and moved back in with parents and not sure when I will be buying a house but we agreed we would find ways round it if things went well and we were a couple like hotels or getting creative when my parents were away etc. I’ve heard of ex’s needing to stay living together before for financial reasons but they have always said they live very separate lives like ships in night almost but he admitted they watched tv together and ate together so coupley stuff really without the sex but he explained that he still cared about her as a friend which I can get. He wasn’t even allowed to phone me from the house though if she was in and did it on a walk or in the car.

I honestly think I would have felt a bit jealous about him living with his ex but then I thought it was a green flag he was so honest. He just seemed like a really nice, caring guy who was so big on communication and talking about our feelings and past life. We were both super excited for the date that should have been today and were communicating non stop with good chats and also flirting by this point… then I blew it all. On Thursday this week I had a really tough day at work and news about a death that made me a bit upset so I had a few drinks and I basically totally misunderstood something he had said in a text being drunk and upset state and then we straightened it out but I kept apologising. He was telling me you’re being silly all is fine with us but I wasn’t reading it and just kept saying stuff lie sorry I’m so stupid, hope I hadn’t ruined things… we went to bed and then in the morning I was cringing massively at myself and texted him sorry about last night and explained I’d been upset and told him was looking forward to meeting and that I’m sometimes a bit over emotional and not thinking clearly after couple of glasses of wine (bad I know you don’t have to say).

So this was then yesterday morning and he sent a long voicemail stating he had decided we shouldn’t meet as I had needed him emotionally and he hadn’t been able to meet my needs because he couldn’t call and say stop being silly as he was at home and that he thought that I deserved more than his current situation and that if we met we would fall for each other and he would hurt me when he couldn’t give me enough time etc… yes his situation was complicated but before my stupidness that night he had been keen to meet and see if we could feel our way so today I am genuinely depressed I probs threw away someone I had a lot of potential with. Honestly never clicked like we did with anyone ever (I know we didn’t actually meet but from all th texting, voice notes and calls we were so similar and gelled so much).

My friends at work immediately jumped on they think he isn’t actually single and the little time for me and not going near his house was because he was still in the relationship. He had explained though she hadn’t wanted the breakup and since they were now separated didn’t want to see who he was dating etc. His course was running at least another two years so he had to respect her wishes because he wouldn’t be able to move out and pay rent elsewhere until at least then.

Just feel so mad at myself for being an emotional tit and self deprecating one, who doesn’t read messages properly when tipsy. All my friends just keep harping on though that he probs wasn’t single and that anyway there were too many bad things like lack of time, no money to do stuff and they all said they couldn’t have a guy live with his ex and still do coupley stuff like watch tv together… but honestly I think they are just doing what friends do and trying to make me feel better.

Any perspectives as to whether you agree I totally screwed up or dodged a bullet welcome? Would you put up with a girl who lives with his ex and wasn’t available a lot?

I do know a few ppl with no social media I’m friends with but yes I know, he said he sometimes used tik tok and YouTube for networking on his course or something. I didn’t actually ever get his second name. The night before the spiralling I gave him mine and made a joke everyone makes about it and asked if he would share us before we meet he said yes but then didn’t give it at that point but at the time I assumed he would give me it later…

Honestly @Helen123UK it gets worse. Why would someone withhold their surname like that? Oh, because he's married/in a relationship and he doesn't want you to be able to find any details or his social media. It isn't normal, straightforward behaviour.

Please say you can see this.

Helen123UK · 24/08/2026 12:34

To be fair just about every guy I’ve ever dated has been cagey on sharing surname until we have met… I don’t get it really as I don’t mind sharing mine. I’ve figured it out for most of them by googling job, first name and where they are from but only works for some kinds of jobs

Oh he’s still married honey. He sounds just like my ex who used to do these very elaborate layered lies to reel in women. Bullet dodged.

Dear me. 42??????

If everything he has told you is true and I very much doubt it is. you have been texting an uber driver for a week who told you he wants to meet up for sex twice a month and he also has no money to spend on dates.

And you got emotionally invested after ONE WEEK.

This. He sounds like a 2/10 at best. Someone else's poor leftovers....

Raise your standards, this guy is hopeless. A bum.

FlorenceLawrence · 24/08/2026 12:52

It's a really bad idea to get into really deep in depth conversations before you've even met him.
Highly likely he's still in a relationship - ask yourself how many women would financially support their ex after he had broken up with them.
Some men just message for the ego boost, and have no intention of ever meeting up at all - he may have been one of those.
I don't think you messed anything up by getting drunk - I think you saved yourself a lot of extra heartache as he would have strung you along, getting you to commit to dates, book hotels or lord knows what else, only to let you down in the end.

Diamond7272 · 24/08/2026 12:54

I once dated someone who was 'always busy' with work. Man, did they work. Mornings, evenings, weekend overtime... Yet, they had no money. Always struggling to afford a pizza.... Nothing added up.

Naturally, the whole story fell apart like a pack of cards. Unemployed. A student in his late 40s.no career prospects. Never had a career. Wife, kids, ex wife, kids, unhappy kids, monthly payments unmet for child support... Just a disaster left, right and centre.

If he can't afford to buy you dinner, rent a room in a travelodge etc, he can't afford a relationship. He's just a scrounging disaster zone... With a baaaad past

Good grief having someone's full name is an absolute minimum before you meet them. Any man who refuses and makes the excuses this one did is not to be trusted.

Learn from these mistakes. If you can't verify a man is who he says he is, you don't meet them. Even 18 year olds know this.

Add that he wanted @Helen123UK to book the hotel so no trace of him and she doesn't even know his name - screams potential rapist if he was single.

Wait, he needs TikTok and YouTube for “networking” to study psychotherapy for his DOCTORATE?!! And you believed him??

Have you had much experience of relationships? Your gullibility comes across as desperation.

A very good and rather scary point there.

@Helen123UK please stop beating yourself up about having 'messed up'. If your conversation after a few drinks had never happened, you were still going on a date and posted what you have about him here, we'd have been begging you not to go there based on everything you've said about him.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 24/08/2026 13:23

@Helen123UK to give you some context as to dating a guy still living in the same property as his ex how it really goes. He makes and receives phone calls at any time. She was fully aware of me right from the start. I was welcome to the house at any time. She was happy that he found someone who made him happy. That's how genuinely separated people behave. If he has to hide you for any reason then he isn't free from his previous relationship. Got to say I agree with the others that he's still married

"Networking" either means to find potential further victims like @Helen123UK or wank material.

Anyone genuinely doing a PhD, already has a degree and a masters and will use LinkedIn for professional networking. How long did he work in Psychotherapy before starting a PhD @Helen123UK? How many other PhD students are Uber Drivers?

Mapleunicorn · 24/08/2026 13:40

No way on earth man is not still married

  1. he can only see you very rarely (because he can’t sneak off regularly easily)
  2. he lives with his “ex” (she doesn’t know she is an ex)
  3. he can’t talk to you when she is there (because he doesn’t want to get caught)
  4. he has no money to spend on dates (as they have a joint account)
  5. He has no social media (so you can’t see the happy family photos or risk contacting someone he knows)
  6. He didn’t want you to know his surname (so you can’t find him online)
  7. He has blocked you (once he has realised that you got emotional after a couple of drinks and therefore you might be high risk for him)

Ticking every single cliched box there is

ChapmanFarm · 24/08/2026 14:17

Your deep connection was probably with Chat GPT.

Anyone can write anything. Going forward don't get in thus deep until you've actually met someone (and even then you need to tread much more carefully). These men know exactly the type of victim they want.

aberturret · 24/08/2026 14:36

Bin this one off.

Yes some people are forced to live together for a while but this is far too messy.

I had to live with an ex for a period of time during Covid. We were polite but there were clear boundaries. Eg I would offer him a cup of tea if I was making one but we cooked / shopped separately, had separate bedrooms and luckily bathrooms, minimised time in communal spaces. I got an tv for my room. Any phone calls he or I made would be in our rooms and no business of the other person in the house. There’s a difference between being respectful of your ex and still being too intwined, even if he is single as he claims to be.

worldshottestmom · 24/08/2026 14:57

God he is so obviously still in a relationship with this woman and is manipulating you by telling you it's over, making himself look honest. It obviously is not over, I would bet money that they are still together and still sleeping together.

Even if he wasn't single, and all of this is true, he is happy enough to live off his ex who is still in love with her. He is using her feelings for him as leverage to get what he wants; a (free!) place to stay. And you want to take her place of being his mummy and paying for his life? Pathetic of him, truly. A man with no money who uses women for it is just repulsive and embarrassing tbqh.

Run a mile. Be glad he doesn’t want to meet because it'll only end in disaster. I'm sure you can do sooooo much better.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 24/08/2026 14:59

They are definitely still married! I would block him.

Helen123UK · 24/08/2026 17:46

I’m def blocked so there will def be no more contact I can reassure you. I find people on online dating who block very rarely unblock they don’t want the fall out of someone saying why did you block me lol

So on top of all the other BS he told you he was the one to block you!!!! You are well out of it. He was probably building up to asking you for money as well.

VoltaireMittyDream · 24/08/2026 18:24

Jesus, the world really is a shameless man’s oyster isn’t it?

If a bloke who readily admits to having absolutely nothing to offer apart from the possibility of fortnightly access to his body in a hotel room he can’t pay for, can have a woman blaming herself for ‘messing up’ when he cuts contact?

MongoosePerfume · 24/08/2026 19:19

I’m quite worried about how vulnerable you are op. There were huge red flags here. I think you need to take some time to yourself and away from the dating sites.

BibbityBoppityTwo · 24/08/2026 22:27

The lengths you are going to in an attempt to normalise behaviour that every single person on this thread can see is extremely shady, should concern you. You need some therapy for your self esteem and to help you understand what constitutes a red flag.

MissRaspberryRipples · 24/08/2026 22:39

You've definitely dodged a bullet there. My sister was dating a guy a few years ago he had about 5 kids who he said he had full custody of and was working two jobs. I did ask how does he work all those hours whilst needing childcare(his youngest kid was probably around 3 or 4 at that time. she said he told her that his aunt was living with him helping to look after the kids so he could work. Turned out she found out weeks later that he was actually still with the kids mum. He tried to tell her they've definitely separated but still live together for financial reasons and he couldn't afford to live separately from her whilst their kids are still young. He was definitely still in a relationship with his Mrs and cheating on her with my sister. There's no way he's financially dependent on this woman without her still being under the impression that they're still a couple
