Did I ruin this, or was his situation too complicated anyway?

I started talking to a guy my age (both of us 42) who was training to be a psychotherapist and completing a doctorate. We had some amazing deep conversations over text, voice notes and phone. It was honestly refreshing not to be doing all the usual small talk and he never tried to do what a lot do and talk about what I like in bed etc All in we talked for a week and a half.

He was upfront the first day that 6 months ago he ended a 14 year relationship that had become like a friendship e.g. they hadn’t had sex in a lot of year, slept in separate rooms etc. He had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before. He said he would have very limited time if we dated as his course was so intense and he was doing an uber delivery job around this to try and get money to live basically and pay for an expensive course. He said we would maybe see each other once or twice a month only. He also said he wouldn’t have much money to take me out much but I’ve had to pay in relationships before when I’ve had more money and I thought it was a green flag he was being upfront. I figured as well it would be better to have someone I click with amazingly and only see him once or twice a month than a lesser connection so we both said we would meet and just feel our way with things.

Maybe mid way through the week and a half he disclosed he still lived with his ex. As I said in the last paragraph he had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before and she had said she would honor that and let him live rent free with her (the mortgage was just in her name for some reason it had never been his house though he had paid towards bills etc). He said that she didn’t allow him to bring any women to the house since it was hers and she wanted to protect her space. Problem with that is I only broke up with my ex 6 months ago too and moved back in with parents and not sure when I will be buying a house but we agreed we would find ways round it if things went well and we were a couple like hotels or getting creative when my parents were away etc. I’ve heard of ex’s needing to stay living together before for financial reasons but they have always said they live very separate lives like ships in night almost but he admitted they watched tv together and ate together so coupley stuff really without the sex but he explained that he still cared about her as a friend which I can get. He wasn’t even allowed to phone me from the house though if she was in and did it on a walk or in the car.

I honestly think I would have felt a bit jealous about him living with his ex but then I thought it was a green flag he was so honest. He just seemed like a really nice, caring guy who was so big on communication and talking about our feelings and past life. We were both super excited for the date that should have been today and were communicating non stop with good chats and also flirting by this point… then I blew it all. On Thursday this week I had a really tough day at work and news about a death that made me a bit upset so I had a few drinks and I basically totally misunderstood something he had said in a text being drunk and upset state and then we straightened it out but I kept apologising. He was telling me you’re being silly all is fine with us but I wasn’t reading it and just kept saying stuff lie sorry I’m so stupid, hope I hadn’t ruined things… we went to bed and then in the morning I was cringing massively at myself and texted him sorry about last night and explained I’d been upset and told him was looking forward to meeting and that I’m sometimes a bit over emotional and not thinking clearly after couple of glasses of wine (bad I know you don’t have to say).

So this was then yesterday morning and he sent a long voicemail stating he had decided we shouldn’t meet as I had needed him emotionally and he hadn’t been able to meet my needs because he couldn’t call and say stop being silly as he was at home and that he thought that I deserved more than his current situation and that if we met we would fall for each other and he would hurt me when he couldn’t give me enough time etc… yes his situation was complicated but before my stupidness that night he had been keen to meet and see if we could feel our way so today I am genuinely depressed I probs threw away someone I had a lot of potential with. Honestly never clicked like we did with anyone ever (I know we didn’t actually meet but from all th texting, voice notes and calls we were so similar and gelled so much).

My friends at work immediately jumped on they think he isn’t actually single and the little time for me and not going near his house was because he was still in the relationship. He had explained though she hadn’t wanted the breakup and since they were now separated didn’t want to see who he was dating etc. His course was running at least another two years so he had to respect her wishes because he wouldn’t be able to move out and pay rent elsewhere until at least then.

Just feel so mad at myself for being an emotional tit and self deprecating one, who doesn’t read messages properly when tipsy. All my friends just keep harping on though that he probs wasn’t single and that anyway there were too many bad things like lack of time, no money to do stuff and they all said they couldn’t have a guy live with his ex and still do coupley stuff like watch tv together… but honestly I think they are just doing what friends do and trying to make me feel better.

Any perspectives as to whether you agree I totally screwed up or dodged a bullet welcome? Would you put up with a girl who lives with his ex and wasn’t available a lot?

I didn’t ask for any of the info he started deep conversation after conversation, sending long voicemails going into detail about all his past… he said he wanted to be honest with anyone up front and was only just starting with online dating that week. He was only hinge, haven’t seen him on any other site

Oh my goddddd

The red flags here are UNREAL

Amazed you are questioning this

Lucyccfc68 · 23/08/2026 17:45

Guarantee he is married and looking for a woman for sex twice a month, who will pay for the hotel (and food/drinks - if he could be bothered)

You sound a bit vulnerable, so please be careful with online dating. Abusive, horrible men can smell a vulnerable woman at 10 paces and target them.

Seajaye · 23/08/2026 17:47

He just wants an affair/ friends with benefits relationship, that's why he is being so ' honest' . It sounds like you might have expectations of more, so give him up in until his is actually single and financially independent, otherwise you may feel used and disappointed. In the mean time, keep fishing in the ocean for a better catch.

nobody randomly tells someone they’ve been speaking to for a week why they’re not on the electoral register. He was giving you so much random information because he was getting in there early with all his lies and excuses incase questions were asked later on.

He was probably using a second phone just for this sneaky stuff and it makes sense you only saw him on hinge and not tinder because that’s the most common dating app and he’d probably be worried a friend of his girlfriend/wife might see him on there.

The course is really expensive so he can just about afford that and for living costs like paying towards bills and food

Then he should take a break from the course until he can afford it, and make a clean break from his Ex. Or at least not date anyone else until he's available if he continues living in her home . You are well out of this honestly OP, he sounds very shifty.

I got the electoral role and soc media comments when I asked for his second name

It does sound like he is married/ in a relationship. They might have a joint bank account so any transactions he would make, or cash he would withdraw to take you out etc. would make his partner question it. He couldn't be seen out with you either because you might have bumped into someone he knows. He couldn't see you often because his partner would question that also. He thought he had it all covered until your drunken call. He couldn't risk you calling him, or trying to find him when you were emotional because his cover could be blown, that's why he blocked you. I'm pretty sure he gave you a false name as well because he is trying to hide his antics. I wonder if he'll carry on trying it with others. OP just see it as experience and a lesson learned. At least now you know what to look out for and it will help you moving forward.

People opt out of the electoral roll but if his name is real then he would be seen on the full roll. Im not suggesting you get a private investigator onto him but they can find out the details very quickly.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 24/08/2026 06:53

Yeah he’s definitely still in that relationship. Probably got cold feet when it actually came to meeting you. Strong chance married and has kids too.

For future reference - about all the things you’ve said are a green flag. What I read was a list of how the many ways in which he set you up to expect nothing at all from him. Once or twice a month because he’s sooooo busy with all his important things? Wait till you want more and he throws that back in your face - “I told you once a month before we started this….”. Then you get resentful because you’re footing the bill for dates/hotels…. “Well I told you I had no money…..”

He played a blinder there in terms of laying out that you should basically have no expectations of him, and you took it as “good communication”. He set it up for you to make yourself very small in this relationship.

Please want better for yourself. He has blocked you - but honestly would you have blocked him? I bet you’d have waited around for the next chance to try and see him.

LizandDerekGoals · 22/08/2026 13:12

Dear me. 42??????

If everything he has told you is true and I very much doubt it is. you have been texting an uber driver for a week who told you he wants to meet up for sex twice a month and he also has no money to spend on dates.

And you got emotionally invested after ONE WEEK.

⬆️ So elegantly and concisely put.
Fully agree.

OP, as I was reading your post I was singing ‘Bullet dodged’ to the tune of Baby Shark

Wecanbeheroes26 · 24/08/2026 07:23

Bloody hell, he was playing you. Bullet dodged, massively. FYI, they were not green flags, it was bullshit, through and through!

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 24/08/2026 07:51

OP, with kindness, this is a ridiculous amount of energy to waste on a connection of a week that you have not even met in real life. He has not been honest with you and he is not available to you. Please move on.

Tillow4ever · 24/08/2026 08:41

Agree with everyone else. As I was reading it I knew instantly his ex doesn’t know she’s an ex…

He blocked you because you were messaging too much and I imagine his wife was asking who was messaging all night… he couldn’t risk raising her suspicions. I wouldn’t be surprised if he unblocks you and reaches out apologising in a few weeks time - you should block him so that he can’t as you sound like you’d fall straight back into his trap.

Unless of course you’re happy to be the mistress that pays for everything for a twice a month shag?

You definitely need to raise your bar and learn to spot red flags, this guy was waving them all and you thought they were green!

Helen123UK · 24/08/2026 08:41

I know, usually I’m fine when things go wrong, lots of ppl ghost or block or just fizzle out but these conversations had just seemed so positive until I messed up by not just stopping apologising 🙈 mortified… I know there were red flags there now but I still messed up with my spiralling when tipsy

OP posts:
ChiasMarineras · 24/08/2026 08:48

You didn’t mess up by spiralling. You messed up by thinking all the flags were green!

He gave you lots of signals, and your intuition had you analysing them carefully. For some reason, you actively chose to ignore the warning signs and declare them green…

OP, bluntly, you getting drunk and saying whatever you said was an absolute godsend. Can you really not see what bad news this man is? It’s baffling that you still seem to be blaming yourself!

ladyb2gw · 24/08/2026 08:52

He obviously married and was looking for a one night stand. You dodged a bullet. Shame you don’t know his address his wife would be very interested in all those messages he sent you

You’re completely missing the point!!! He was playing you for a complete fool and you still think he’s the catch and you’ve messed up!!

Are you not listening to what every single person on this thread is saying??? These were not positive conversations, these was not a special connection!!

As PP said, he’s a married Uber driver with no money.

Look, I understand you’re really hurt and I try hard to avoid being harsh, but WAKE UP TO YOURSELF.

You did not “ruin” anything. You were messaging a narcissistic married man who love bombed you with fancy bullshit words and set you up to have zero expectations of him. If you can’t see the glaringly obvious here then I fear this will be far from the last time you experience something like this.

MarilynMerlot · 24/08/2026 09:25

‘I can’t believe I messed up the Nigerian prince scam!! Now I get to keep all my money and not spend it on a married Uber driver! 😢 🙈’

As gently as I can, please get some help for your self esteem, this is not normal. You must see you are worth more than whoever this guy was.

FaceIt · 24/08/2026 09:37

Please at least think about what EVERYONE on here is saying.

It’s got absolutely nothing to do with you messing up. He was a walking red flag and he very easily and successfully conned you from the get-go. You fell for all of his red flags hook line and sinker.

When the dust has settled, I really hope you reflect and learn from this, and next time you meet someone stop being so desperate and take it slowly, because with the greatest respect as it stands, you are very gullible and such an easy target.

Your “spiralling” saved you from getting into a relationship with a married man. Maybe your subconscious had spotted the red flags so decided to show you them by doing this!

But also you were a bit of a red flag yourself. Spiralling and obsessing over some drunken texts like this over a guy you were talking to for less time than most families go on holiday in a year is insane. It should be fun and easy. And at this stage a blow off should be easy to shrug off and move on to the next - the fact you can’t shows he was love bombing you. Or that you get too intense, too quickly.

Next time you meet someone, force yourself to slow down.

He said he had no social media and wasn’t on electoral role either as he was abused by his mother as a child and she had tried to contact him as an adult so he wanted no presence online for her to know where he lived but no I didn’t think of that

Read this again to yourself and then ask yourself if this is the sort of thing that’s remotely believable….

Helen123UK · 24/08/2026 12:21

I do know a few ppl with no social media I’m friends with but yes I know, he said he sometimes used tik tok and YouTube for networking on his course or something. I didn’t actually ever get his second name. The night before the spiralling I gave him mine and made a joke everyone makes about it and asked if he would share us before we meet he said yes but then didn’t give it at that point but at the time I assumed he would give me it later…
