I started talking to a guy my age (both of us 42) who was training to be a psychotherapist and completing a doctorate. We had some amazing deep conversations over text, voice notes and phone. It was honestly refreshing not to be doing all the usual small talk and he never tried to do what a lot do and talk about what I like in bed etc All in we talked for a week and a half.

He was upfront the first day that 6 months ago he ended a 14 year relationship that had become like a friendship e.g. they hadn’t had sex in a lot of year, slept in separate rooms etc. He had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before. He said he would have very limited time if we dated as his course was so intense and he was doing an uber delivery job around this to try and get money to live basically and pay for an expensive course. He said we would maybe see each other once or twice a month only. He also said he wouldn’t have much money to take me out much but I’ve had to pay in relationships before when I’ve had more money and I thought it was a green flag he was being upfront. I figured as well it would be better to have someone I click with amazingly and only see him once or twice a month than a lesser connection so we both said we would meet and just feel our way with things.

Maybe mid way through the week and a half he disclosed he still lived with his ex. As I said in the last paragraph he had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before and she had said she would honor that and let him live rent free with her (the mortgage was just in her name for some reason it had never been his house though he had paid towards bills etc). He said that she didn’t allow him to bring any women to the house since it was hers and she wanted to protect her space. Problem with that is I only broke up with my ex 6 months ago too and moved back in with parents and not sure when I will be buying a house but we agreed we would find ways round it if things went well and we were a couple like hotels or getting creative when my parents were away etc. I’ve heard of ex’s needing to stay living together before for financial reasons but they have always said they live very separate lives like ships in night almost but he admitted they watched tv together and ate together so coupley stuff really without the sex but he explained that he still cared about her as a friend which I can get. He wasn’t even allowed to phone me from the house though if she was in and did it on a walk or in the car.

I honestly think I would have felt a bit jealous about him living with his ex but then I thought it was a green flag he was so honest. He just seemed like a really nice, caring guy who was so big on communication and talking about our feelings and past life. We were both super excited for the date that should have been today and were communicating non stop with good chats and also flirting by this point… then I blew it all. On Thursday this week I had a really tough day at work and news about a death that made me a bit upset so I had a few drinks and I basically totally misunderstood something he had said in a text being drunk and upset state and then we straightened it out but I kept apologising. He was telling me you’re being silly all is fine with us but I wasn’t reading it and just kept saying stuff lie sorry I’m so stupid, hope I hadn’t ruined things… we went to bed and then in the morning I was cringing massively at myself and texted him sorry about last night and explained I’d been upset and told him was looking forward to meeting and that I’m sometimes a bit over emotional and not thinking clearly after couple of glasses of wine (bad I know you don’t have to say).

So this was then yesterday morning and he sent a long voicemail stating he had decided we shouldn’t meet as I had needed him emotionally and he hadn’t been able to meet my needs because he couldn’t call and say stop being silly as he was at home and that he thought that I deserved more than his current situation and that if we met we would fall for each other and he would hurt me when he couldn’t give me enough time etc… yes his situation was complicated but before my stupidness that night he had been keen to meet and see if we could feel our way so today I am genuinely depressed I probs threw away someone I had a lot of potential with. Honestly never clicked like we did with anyone ever (I know we didn’t actually meet but from all th texting, voice notes and calls we were so similar and gelled so much).

My friends at work immediately jumped on they think he isn’t actually single and the little time for me and not going near his house was because he was still in the relationship. He had explained though she hadn’t wanted the breakup and since they were now separated didn’t want to see who he was dating etc. His course was running at least another two years so he had to respect her wishes because he wouldn’t be able to move out and pay rent elsewhere until at least then.

Just feel so mad at myself for being an emotional tit and self deprecating one, who doesn’t read messages properly when tipsy. All my friends just keep harping on though that he probs wasn’t single and that anyway there were too many bad things like lack of time, no money to do stuff and they all said they couldn’t have a guy live with his ex and still do coupley stuff like watch tv together… but honestly I think they are just doing what friends do and trying to make me feel better.

Any perspectives as to whether you agree I totally screwed up or dodged a bullet welcome? Would you put up with a girl who lives with his ex and wasn’t available a lot?

Bloody hell woman all this and you havnt met yet! If he is genuiune hes seen you as a red flag but i think hes still with her, many people live together after they split but they spend as much time as possible outside the house ie he would want to be at yours all the time, he sounds like a narcistist who is training to be a psychotherapist to look down his nose at all the little folk with all their little problems and next time meet the guy straight away ie within 2 weeks

Do you know what a narcissist actually is?

Helen, respect yourself and don’t overthink this. He might have been a deep thinker and able to connect with you differently - but he’s still at the end of the day a cocklodger …. Looking for his next free ride and accommodation. You deserve better.

Bettyblue22 · 23/08/2026 13:30

Wow, you have dodged a massive bullet here.

PinkCrab · 23/08/2026 13:36

I figured as well it would be better to have someone I click with amazingly and only see him once or twice a month than a lesser connection so we both said we would meet and just feel our way with things.

this stood out to me the most OP. These aren’t the only two options. It’s possible to find someone you click amazingly with who is also in a position to give you the time and attention that you want. It sounds like you’re clinging on to the good bits and overlooking the parts of this story which mean you’re clearly incompatible. Worth reflecting on why this is before embarking on dating again I think

Iamhappyasiam · 23/08/2026 13:49

Even if everything he’s told you is true, he isn’t really in a position to be dating anyone right now, not until he’s finished with this course and sorted out his living situation. I strongly doubt he’s actually single.

My feeling is that he’s looking for an easy side piece he can meet occasionally for sex without having to put much effort or money into it. He's made up or exaggerated parts of his story to make it easier for him to get what he wants for free, or as cheaply as possible.

Voneska · 23/08/2026 13:53

If there was ever a situation that was : ' ALL about HIM ' ...then THIS is IT. Listen: it thinks hes got himself Off - The - Hook, by explaining that his EX has even put her OWN life on hold by SUPPORTING him while he does A COURSE...?? In what UNIVERSE WOULD an EX. put their OWN life on hold and FINANCIALY support an EX. Who supposedly MYST abide by HER rules and not text their present date..???? This is THEE most elaborate cock- an loada BULL I have ever heard. As soon as you ' got drunk' and became ALL EMOTIONAL' ...HE realised that he had bitten off more than he could handle and that YOU was in danger of rocking his ( perfect ) little domestic arrangement. Men like having extra marital relations with women who are emotionally detached and don't show any signs of getting entangled with them . So as soon as you became unpredictable : he cut it off. It might take you a few months to process THE TRUTH here, but you WILL. IF you play it cool and recede your steps. Stay back COOL OFF. This could developed into a complicated triangle.

Blimey, do people do this kind of secret squirrel stuff? I have to be honest, that sounds absolutely deranged. I’m wondering what kind of experiences you’ve had to be this suspicious and mistrusting. Kind of makes me sad.

Internet dating! Including one guy who when i googled his tag line was on sex sites looking for men!!

Psychotherapist? 🤣 more like psychopath 🙄

Pollqueen · 23/08/2026 14:41

@Pinkypromise43 are you on glue 😳 🤔

NegativeFreak · 23/08/2026 14:44

All this after 1 week?

Even if he is truly single, this is all very full on and he's probably right to back off.

Helen123UK · 23/08/2026 15:11

I didn’t ask for any of the info he started deep conversation after conversation, sending long voicemails going into detail about all his past… he said he wanted to be honest with anyone up front and was only just starting with online dating that week. He was only hinge, haven’t seen him on any other site

OP posts:
goldylock · 23/08/2026 15:15

Dodged a bullet? You dodged whole rounds of bullets!

It's very clever also that he's now got you thinking you've done something wrong. Because, this leaves the door open for when he comes back (and he will). Because you'll feel grateful he comes back. You've been warned.

All the "up front" nonsense is just that, nonsense.

You need to put some guards in place for yourself and boundaries. Like, no talking to someone still living with an ex. Meet in person a week or so after chatting. Taking everything a person says with a pinch of salt until here is evidence they've earned your trust. At the moment, you've literally said to him "Here is 100% of my trust. Go ruin it" A safer option is "Here is 10% of my trust and in time/things are right, can build it up."

desperatemum1234 · 23/08/2026 15:19

OP you sound very vulnerable and extremely naive. I don’t think you’re ready for dating. Work on building up your ability to spot red flags and not getting invested so quickly. 1 week?!!

This.

Great he didn't attempt sex chat after one whole week but he did try to ascertain how how your boundaries are and found his answer.

He'll be back. This is part of the game. These men know exactly how to spot a vulnerable woman.

Did you come out of a difficult or abusive relationship? If so fo God Freedom programme before you even consider dating.

Hanksness · 23/08/2026 15:47

Dear me. 42??????

If everything he has told you is true and I very much doubt it is. you have been texting an uber driver for a week who told you he wants to meet up for sex twice a month and he also has no money to spend on dates.

And you got emotionally invested after ONE WEEK.

This!

FoldItIn · 23/08/2026 16:11

I agree with @desperatemum1234 that you sound vulnerable and incredibly naive.
I am unsure what to advise because I think you will cling on to this man regardless @Helen123UK
If you do one thing, continue to be open and honest with the people around you in real life.

He didn't start discussing what you wanted in bed because he was using you as a therapist. Talking AT you about all his problems. He didn't give a toss about what you wanted.

Deep my ass, just another selfish, boring man.

Havinganosy · 23/08/2026 17:09

Did his name and picture on WhatsApp match what he told you it was? As normally you can see the name you saved them as but also the name they have given their own WhatsApp if that makes sense!

That’s really strange. For what it’s worth I don’t think you were naive. You believed someone until it got weird - you wouldn’t have wrote on here if you believed everything was fine! Sometimes people just do weird things and it’s not a reflection of you or your worth.

You need to grasp that there are different kinds of “games” men play (and women too) when they are dating. He chose “deep intimacy” and “honesty” as his gambit. If you rejected it out of hand he would move on. If it didn’t pay off fast enough he would stop and move on.
