Did I ruin this, or was his situation too complicated anyway?

I started talking to a guy my age (both of us 42) who was training to be a psychotherapist and completing a doctorate. We had some amazing deep conversations over text, voice notes and phone. It was honestly refreshing not to be doing all the usual small talk and he never tried to do what a lot do and talk about what I like in bed etc All in we talked for a week and a half.

He was upfront the first day that 6 months ago he ended a 14 year relationship that had become like a friendship e.g. they hadn’t had sex in a lot of year, slept in separate rooms etc. He had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before. He said he would have very limited time if we dated as his course was so intense and he was doing an uber delivery job around this to try and get money to live basically and pay for an expensive course. He said we would maybe see each other once or twice a month only. He also said he wouldn’t have much money to take me out much but I’ve had to pay in relationships before when I’ve had more money and I thought it was a green flag he was being upfront. I figured as well it would be better to have someone I click with amazingly and only see him once or twice a month than a lesser connection so we both said we would meet and just feel our way with things.

Maybe mid way through the week and a half he disclosed he still lived with his ex. As I said in the last paragraph he had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before and she had said she would honor that and let him live rent free with her (the mortgage was just in her name for some reason it had never been his house though he had paid towards bills etc). He said that she didn’t allow him to bring any women to the house since it was hers and she wanted to protect her space. Problem with that is I only broke up with my ex 6 months ago too and moved back in with parents and not sure when I will be buying a house but we agreed we would find ways round it if things went well and we were a couple like hotels or getting creative when my parents were away etc. I’ve heard of ex’s needing to stay living together before for financial reasons but they have always said they live very separate lives like ships in night almost but he admitted they watched tv together and ate together so coupley stuff really without the sex but he explained that he still cared about her as a friend which I can get. He wasn’t even allowed to phone me from the house though if she was in and did it on a walk or in the car.

I honestly think I would have felt a bit jealous about him living with his ex but then I thought it was a green flag he was so honest. He just seemed like a really nice, caring guy who was so big on communication and talking about our feelings and past life. We were both super excited for the date that should have been today and were communicating non stop with good chats and also flirting by this point… then I blew it all. On Thursday this week I had a really tough day at work and news about a death that made me a bit upset so I had a few drinks and I basically totally misunderstood something he had said in a text being drunk and upset state and then we straightened it out but I kept apologising. He was telling me you’re being silly all is fine with us but I wasn’t reading it and just kept saying stuff lie sorry I’m so stupid, hope I hadn’t ruined things… we went to bed and then in the morning I was cringing massively at myself and texted him sorry about last night and explained I’d been upset and told him was looking forward to meeting and that I’m sometimes a bit over emotional and not thinking clearly after couple of glasses of wine (bad I know you don’t have to say).

So this was then yesterday morning and he sent a long voicemail stating he had decided we shouldn’t meet as I had needed him emotionally and he hadn’t been able to meet my needs because he couldn’t call and say stop being silly as he was at home and that he thought that I deserved more than his current situation and that if we met we would fall for each other and he would hurt me when he couldn’t give me enough time etc… yes his situation was complicated but before my stupidness that night he had been keen to meet and see if we could feel our way so today I am genuinely depressed I probs threw away someone I had a lot of potential with. Honestly never clicked like we did with anyone ever (I know we didn’t actually meet but from all th texting, voice notes and calls we were so similar and gelled so much).

My friends at work immediately jumped on they think he isn’t actually single and the little time for me and not going near his house was because he was still in the relationship. He had explained though she hadn’t wanted the breakup and since they were now separated didn’t want to see who he was dating etc. His course was running at least another two years so he had to respect her wishes because he wouldn’t be able to move out and pay rent elsewhere until at least then.

Just feel so mad at myself for being an emotional tit and self deprecating one, who doesn’t read messages properly when tipsy. All my friends just keep harping on though that he probs wasn’t single and that anyway there were too many bad things like lack of time, no money to do stuff and they all said they couldn’t have a guy live with his ex and still do coupley stuff like watch tv together… but honestly I think they are just doing what friends do and trying to make me feel better.

Any perspectives as to whether you agree I totally screwed up or dodged a bullet welcome? Would you put up with a girl who lives with his ex and wasn’t available a lot?

Lies and bullshit. In time you will be grateful that it went no further. Please be more discriminating in future.

Boomer55 · 22/08/2026 15:49

A week and a half? Forget it and move on.

Jenpen31 · 22/08/2026 15:51

From reading this.....this is what I get from it:

  1. He is a married man.
  2. He drives an uber.
  3. He wants to meet twice monthly for sex.
  4. When he has realised you have emotions, he has dropped you.

Move on girl. Block. Delete and move on.

Absolutely sounds like he is still in a relationship. You can do better than this.

Dear me. 42??????

If everything he has told you is true and I very much doubt it is. you have been texting an uber driver for a week who told you he wants to meet up for sex twice a month and he also has no money to spend on dates.

And you got emotionally invested after ONE WEEK.

This 🤦‍♀️

LovingLifeInTheCountry · 22/08/2026 15:58

@Helen123UK. Did you see a photo of him?

Dancingonlies · 22/08/2026 15:59

My vote is definitely dodged a bullet

Duckiewasthefirstniceguy · 22/08/2026 15:59

I went back and read your ages. You’re 42?! Seriously?! Wise up, fgs!

UpDownAllAround1 · 22/08/2026 16:05

You had a similar issue in June with a 28yo? Slow down OP

Smineusername · 22/08/2026 16:05

How old are you?

It is dangerous for you to date if you are that naive.

Run.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 22/08/2026 16:09

Put it this way OP. He's a pretty lousy psychotherapist candidate if he's dumped you because he cannot handle one emotional phonecall brought on by you having heard about a death in your circle. For which you apologised the next day.
It really wasn't you. It's him. He put about a weeks research in to see if you were a suitable candidate for his con and then discovered that it probably wouldn't work for a variety of reasons... which were nothing to do with you.. and everything to do with how useful you could have been to him.

You really have dodged a bullet and there are much better people out there.

MarthaLovesLaughing · 22/08/2026 16:12

Helen123UK · 22/08/2026 13:33

The course is really expensive so he can just about afford that and for living costs like paying towards bills and food

Hes lying to you. Come ON. Grow up.

AnitaCam · 22/08/2026 16:15

He has no money.
His partner is supporting him.
His partner Didnt put him in the mortgage.
His partner doesn’t want sex with him…
… or, he’s trying to find sex outside his relationship.
He is trying to impress you by seeming ‘ deep’ because he’s got nothing to offer.
He dumped you when you showed feelings.

hey ho.

Helen123UK · 22/08/2026 14:28

We didn’t talk about what we like in bed, that’s what I’m saying that’s what he didn’t do that other guys do

Being respectful and not expecting sexting is the bare minimum to expect after a week and a half of messaging when you haven't even met. It is not a green flag.

MCF86 · 22/08/2026 16:17

Drunk texting is usually a bad idea but I think it's saved you this time. You asked if we thought you messed up or dodged a bullet and everyone is saying the latter yet it seems like you're trying to convince them their wrong. They aren't. You were a secret, it was an affair even if they are not technically together (they are, though)

I lived with my ex for a year post split, so I know it can be true but AT BEST she didn't want to break up and rather than insisting and being clear with boundaries he has continued living exactly the same life with her he was anyway.

LovingLifeInTheCountry · 22/08/2026 15:58

@Helen123UK. Did you see a photo of him?

Yes he had about 5 on his profile and he sent me some more on WhatsApp and we did video chat once

What I see in this is that if a man tells you something that is less than ideal about themselves you laud them as honest when you have no idea if what they’ve said is true. For all you know he can only see you twice a month and you can’t come to his house and he can’t spend money on you because he’s still with his partner.

You don’t know if he’s actually honest or just a really good liar. Your drunken neediness would put anyone off tbh but especially if he’s looking for an affair. An unstable affair partner who could get drunk and call and text him all night is hardly discreet for him.

Even if he’s not with her it’s complicated and you react to bad news by getting drunk. I’d work on that before dating… nobody wants someone who descends into a bottle when they’re sad. I would know and now I’m sober.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 22/08/2026 16:30

As much as it feels shit just now, you've dodged a bullet.

It sounds like he's still in a relationship with his partner. If he doesn't have time for normal dating, why is he on a dating site? He's looking for sex and not being honest with you or his partner.

Oliveoy · 22/08/2026 16:34

Surely nobody is this naive. He's clearly married and gets his kicks from messaging other women. There's a whole roster of you

OneOfEachPlease · 22/08/2026 16:36

I think he might have been getting an ego boost but never planned to meet. I wouldn’t say those living factors were necessarily red flags, but jumping on an excuse not to meet is.

AlmostAutumn26 · 22/08/2026 16:40

This is mad - you only knew him a week and a half! Think back to two weeks ago and forget he ever existed.

Ophy83 · 22/08/2026 16:47

The things you see as green flags are very much red flags...

Pollqueen · 22/08/2026 17:00

You really, really need to re-think your definition of a red flag. Honestly OP this guy was a walking red flag from the start and you merrily dismissed every single one

He's married/living with someone and wanted a bit of distraction and you fell hard within a couple of days and he therefore ran for the hills

Kimmers4334 · 22/08/2026 17:00

His home setup is really suspicious. I don’t think he’s a very good psychotherapist if he would genuinely think his situation of living with an ex who didn’t want to break up but supports him financially and wants to live like they’re still in a relationship would work. Or maybe that was all a lie and they haven’t broken up at all. Either way, it does sound like he isn’t able to meet your emotional needs so it’s a lucky escape. Not your fault and at least he gave you closure by messaging and not just ghosting

TFImBackIn · 22/08/2026 17:08

So he's a skint man in his forties who's retraining even though he can't afford it, and is living with a woman he says he's dumped - but who is willing to let him live there as long as he doesn't contact other women... And he wants to be a psychotherapist yet dumped you and blocked you immediately without giving you the chance to say anything... Hmm he's make a really good therapist, wouldn't he?

He's fed you a load of BS, OP. He's with that other woman and thought he'd have you on the side - you couldn't go to his house, you'd have to pay for the dates and you could only see him once or twice a month. Can you not see what's wrong with that?
