Did I ruin this, or was his situation too complicated anyway?

I started talking to a guy my age (both of us 42) who was training to be a psychotherapist and completing a doctorate. We had some amazing deep conversations over text, voice notes and phone. It was honestly refreshing not to be doing all the usual small talk and he never tried to do what a lot do and talk about what I like in bed etc All in we talked for a week and a half.

He was upfront the first day that 6 months ago he ended a 14 year relationship that had become like a friendship e.g. they hadn’t had sex in a lot of year, slept in separate rooms etc. He had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before. He said he would have very limited time if we dated as his course was so intense and he was doing an uber delivery job around this to try and get money to live basically and pay for an expensive course. He said we would maybe see each other once or twice a month only. He also said he wouldn’t have much money to take me out much but I’ve had to pay in relationships before when I’ve had more money and I thought it was a green flag he was being upfront. I figured as well it would be better to have someone I click with amazingly and only see him once or twice a month than a lesser connection so we both said we would meet and just feel our way with things.

Maybe mid way through the week and a half he disclosed he still lived with his ex. As I said in the last paragraph he had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before and she had said she would honor that and let him live rent free with her (the mortgage was just in her name for some reason it had never been his house though he had paid towards bills etc). He said that she didn’t allow him to bring any women to the house since it was hers and she wanted to protect her space. Problem with that is I only broke up with my ex 6 months ago too and moved back in with parents and not sure when I will be buying a house but we agreed we would find ways round it if things went well and we were a couple like hotels or getting creative when my parents were away etc. I’ve heard of ex’s needing to stay living together before for financial reasons but they have always said they live very separate lives like ships in night almost but he admitted they watched tv together and ate together so coupley stuff really without the sex but he explained that he still cared about her as a friend which I can get. He wasn’t even allowed to phone me from the house though if she was in and did it on a walk or in the car.

I honestly think I would have felt a bit jealous about him living with his ex but then I thought it was a green flag he was so honest. He just seemed like a really nice, caring guy who was so big on communication and talking about our feelings and past life. We were both super excited for the date that should have been today and were communicating non stop with good chats and also flirting by this point… then I blew it all. On Thursday this week I had a really tough day at work and news about a death that made me a bit upset so I had a few drinks and I basically totally misunderstood something he had said in a text being drunk and upset state and then we straightened it out but I kept apologising. He was telling me you’re being silly all is fine with us but I wasn’t reading it and just kept saying stuff lie sorry I’m so stupid, hope I hadn’t ruined things… we went to bed and then in the morning I was cringing massively at myself and texted him sorry about last night and explained I’d been upset and told him was looking forward to meeting and that I’m sometimes a bit over emotional and not thinking clearly after couple of glasses of wine (bad I know you don’t have to say).

So this was then yesterday morning and he sent a long voicemail stating he had decided we shouldn’t meet as I had needed him emotionally and he hadn’t been able to meet my needs because he couldn’t call and say stop being silly as he was at home and that he thought that I deserved more than his current situation and that if we met we would fall for each other and he would hurt me when he couldn’t give me enough time etc… yes his situation was complicated but before my stupidness that night he had been keen to meet and see if we could feel our way so today I am genuinely depressed I probs threw away someone I had a lot of potential with. Honestly never clicked like we did with anyone ever (I know we didn’t actually meet but from all th texting, voice notes and calls we were so similar and gelled so much).

My friends at work immediately jumped on they think he isn’t actually single and the little time for me and not going near his house was because he was still in the relationship. He had explained though she hadn’t wanted the breakup and since they were now separated didn’t want to see who he was dating etc. His course was running at least another two years so he had to respect her wishes because he wouldn’t be able to move out and pay rent elsewhere until at least then.

Just feel so mad at myself for being an emotional tit and self deprecating one, who doesn’t read messages properly when tipsy. All my friends just keep harping on though that he probs wasn’t single and that anyway there were too many bad things like lack of time, no money to do stuff and they all said they couldn’t have a guy live with his ex and still do coupley stuff like watch tv together… but honestly I think they are just doing what friends do and trying to make me feel better.

Any perspectives as to whether you agree I totally screwed up or dodged a bullet welcome? Would you put up with a girl who lives with his ex and wasn’t available a lot?

Why are you even bothering other this anymore? He’s clearly a lying married man living with his wife having an affair!!! Or trying to😂

AltitudeCheck · 22/08/2026 18:48

He's willing to sponge off his ex while he studies and shags about? Delightful cocklodger isn't he?? Where did you meet this prince amongst men?

Do you really think she has agreed to this situation? To support him for 2 years and then what?... he will get a proper job and move out?

If she really believes they have seperated (she doesn't!) and this was a healthy genuine friends situation he would have been able to call you.

I think your outburst scared him off, he realised you might have a few drinks, get emotional and be able to blow his cover if you knew more about him. He got scared of being caught and blocked you.

Mollymaid64 · 22/08/2026 18:50

I don't even believe he's doing a doctorate or that he's single. Forget him, he's a liar.

PetulaGordeno · 22/08/2026 18:58

Well he will need an extraordinary level of training to become a therapist as he’s a lying, cheating arsehole.

MarthaLovesLaughing · 22/08/2026 19:01

Helen123UK · 22/08/2026 17:22

He said he had no social media and wasn’t on electoral role either as he was abused by his mother as a child and she had tried to contact him as an adult so he wanted no presence online for her to know where he lived but no I didn’t think of that

Jesus. He's done a number on you in a few days. What a cunt. He'll have given you a false name

LasVegass · 22/08/2026 19:16

He’s blocked you so there’s an end to that. But how do you get so intense with someone in 10 days? To know the ins and outs of living arrangements, who pays the mortgage, how expensive the course is etc. Hold off a little, this isn’t healthy IMO.

WildLeader · 22/08/2026 19:28

Christ he’s telling you to beg for scraps on the first day?

he’s absolutely lying about the relationship at home.

it’s all a bit cheater script isn’t it?

VoltaireMittyDream · 22/08/2026 19:33

Yeah he’s married. Wants a shag in a hotel and no drama.

My mate met someone like this who had all sorts of reasons why she couldn’t come to his house and she couldn’t call him at certain times and they had to meet at dreary Travel Taverns off the motorway. None of us (her friends) bought it but she defended him to the hilt every time.

About four years in he finally confessed he was married (with 3 teenage DC he had never mentioned).

Unbelievably, she is still meeting him in sad hotels, though less for sex these days than hearing him moan about his job and his middle aged aches and pains and financial worries.

He vows to leave his wife once the youngest is through GCSEs (by which point the middle one will of course be doing A Levels and that won’t be a good time either, and then there’s the expense of university, etc etc)

You’ve had a lucky escape, OP. Don’t be so gullible, men are lying shits. This is not on you.

KittyCorncrake · 22/08/2026 19:42

Naurrr · 22/08/2026 13:18

No man on earth is worth this level of analysing and pondering, nevermind some bloke you've texted for a week.

Believe mens actions, they are not at all complicated.
If you choose to date men, always remember the phrase 'if he wanted to, he would.'

Edited

This.
I have two friends who have been in this station with men who are still living in the same house as ‘ex’ partner.
In both cases they went out freely as single men and dated, but ‘couldn’t’ take it make calls at home.
Even if there is no sexual relationship with the ‘house mate’ it is a wholly unsatisfactory situation since you can’t visit their home/ go to their wider family events etc.
They are having it all /home life and sex with another woman.
In both cases my friends came to their senses eventually.

FaceIt · 22/08/2026 21:50

I mean this kindly, but you are being very naive.

Never get involved with a man who is still living with his ‘ex’ no matter what the excuse or circumstances.

DaisyChain505 · 22/08/2026 21:59

I wouldn’t even believe that he gave you the correct name. This man sold you a pack of lies.

WerewolfOfLoudon · 22/08/2026 22:52

Havinganosy · 22/08/2026 17:24

At this point you don’t know if anything he told you is the truth. I would try looking him up on LinkedIn etc as sounds very suspicious!

Doubt many Uber drivers have LinkedIn.

If you can't find anything at all online @Helen123UK he hasn't told you his real name. Your bar must be scrapping the ground if after a week because he hasn't asked what you like in bed you consider that is a green flag. You probably aren't the only one with whom he's having deep conversations.

Ilovelifeverymuch · 22/08/2026 23:32

Haha seriously? So how is he planning to buy a house given he isn't on the electoral roll which impacts his credit report?

Please move on and stop eating your time. And the fact that he blocked you says a lot.

And even if he was related is this the type of drama and trauma you want to bring into your life? A 42 year old man still dealing from the abuse from his mother that he has no online presence etc, and still scared about his mother finding him?

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 22/08/2026 23:33

Oh come on OP, he’s married and living with his wife - the twice a month bollocks is probably the days she’s out at a hobby or something 😂

My god this guy has thought of everything hasn’t he 😂🤦‍♀️

So very blatantly clearly married/coupled up OP. It’s screamingly obvious. You will see this for yourself in a week or two.

Terfedout · 23/08/2026 12:48

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 42 you say??

Comtesse · 23/08/2026 13:07

He sounds like he was 5 minutes away from saying he was a Nigerian prince too. Sorry OP it all sounds completely made up.

KatbJoy · 23/08/2026 13:08

This exactly what my ex husband would say to a side chick before I left him. Excuse and explanation for everything. Only available when it's convenient to him.

My ex is also the "very sensitive guy", but what he's truly after is just a shag, because he can't fully move on from our relationship that he ruined. I have no idea how many girls he fooled, but at least he will pay for drinks and food. We had a narrowboat and he would meet the girls there and then come back home and wash in a shower leaving the girl hair in the bath. Disgusting.

Good co parent though, available any moment I call him.

It's worth leaving those in the sewers where they belong.

Waytoohothot · 23/08/2026 13:08

Bloody hell woman all this and you havnt met yet! If he is genuiune hes seen you as a red flag but i think hes still with her, many people live together after they split but they spend as much time as possible outside the house ie he would want to be at yours all the time, he sounds like a narcistist who is training to be a psychotherapist to look down his nose at all the little folk with all their little problems and next time meet the guy straight away ie within 2 weeks

BoredZelda · 23/08/2026 13:12

Relationship status aside, he is a 42 year old relying on another adult for financial security. If you want to bring that into your life for the sake of a bunk up, then sure, try to win him over.

Waytoohothot · 23/08/2026 13:14

Helen123UK · 22/08/2026 17:26

Yeah I tried all
sirts of searches including LinkedIn but nothing and I can usually find most ppl I talk to easily enough after a bit of searching

Google his phone number and email and address if you have it and use google reverse check to check any photos hes sent you, hes obviously lied about his name, also check out other dating apps to see if hes on them and also his name tag on the sites ie johnboy675 you can google that as well as many men use the same name tag,

Plumnora · 23/08/2026 13:14

You've had a very lucky escape.
Just to break it down, he only wanted to meet up occasionally. He 'doesn't have much money' so can't take you out therefore that means either you paying for everything or (and I suspect this is the real reason) him not wanting to be seen with another woman in public and it getting back to his "ex" (his wife/ long term partner). He still lives with his "ex" and he can't get emotionally invested.
Girl! What are thinking?!! You deserve waaaaay better than this creep! You got emotionally invested after a few days, you clearly wanted way more than he was offering, and at least he was upfront I guess! And you blame yourself for scaring him off!!! This is a blessing in disguise, you've saved yourself further heartache, trust me.
I think you need to work on yourself and build up your self esteem because you clearly have a very low opinion of yourself.
Take it from someone who knows only too well, a man isn't going to magically make everything better, you need to love yourself otherwise you're going to keep attracting these bottom feeders.
Take this as win, feel sorry for his partner and move on to better things. X

From everything you’ve said, it sounds like he’s been trying to let you down gently without being explicit. I feel that you’ve misinterpreted it as he’s being kind and considerate when actually he’s been trying to say no without saying no. He should have just said no, but he didn’t. That’s my take anyway.

CrayonCritic · 23/08/2026 13:16

Being upfront that you can only see someone twice a month isn’t really a green flag. If you’re genuinely keen on someone, you’re optimistic that you’ll find a way to make it work despite the limitations. You can communicate that there will be limitations, but saying “I can only see you twice a month” sounds more like he’s setting a firm limit around his availability, and potentially giving himself something to point back to later: “Well, I told you it would be like this.”

And you have to ask yourself why he’s only available those two days. What else is he doing? Come on. He clearly has time to call you, so he’s not busy every single minute from the moment he wakes up until the moment he goes to sleep. If he’s making time for calls, he can presumably make some time to see you too if he really wants to.

If he’s really such a good communicator, he wouldn’t have given up at the first communication wobble. He’s absolutely full of bs and there is NO reason to blame yourself.
