Did I ruin this, or was his situation too complicated anyway?

I started talking to a guy my age (both of us 42) who was training to be a psychotherapist and completing a doctorate. We had some amazing deep conversations over text, voice notes and phone. It was honestly refreshing not to be doing all the usual small talk and he never tried to do what a lot do and talk about what I like in bed etc All in we talked for a week and a half.

He was upfront the first day that 6 months ago he ended a 14 year relationship that had become like a friendship e.g. they hadn’t had sex in a lot of year, slept in separate rooms etc. He had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before. He said he would have very limited time if we dated as his course was so intense and he was doing an uber delivery job around this to try and get money to live basically and pay for an expensive course. He said we would maybe see each other once or twice a month only. He also said he wouldn’t have much money to take me out much but I’ve had to pay in relationships before when I’ve had more money and I thought it was a green flag he was being upfront. I figured as well it would be better to have someone I click with amazingly and only see him once or twice a month than a lesser connection so we both said we would meet and just feel our way with things.

Maybe mid way through the week and a half he disclosed he still lived with his ex. As I said in the last paragraph he had quit his job to start the course when they were together and she had agreed to support them financially as he had done similar for her years before and she had said she would honor that and let him live rent free with her (the mortgage was just in her name for some reason it had never been his house though he had paid towards bills etc). He said that she didn’t allow him to bring any women to the house since it was hers and she wanted to protect her space. Problem with that is I only broke up with my ex 6 months ago too and moved back in with parents and not sure when I will be buying a house but we agreed we would find ways round it if things went well and we were a couple like hotels or getting creative when my parents were away etc. I’ve heard of ex’s needing to stay living together before for financial reasons but they have always said they live very separate lives like ships in night almost but he admitted they watched tv together and ate together so coupley stuff really without the sex but he explained that he still cared about her as a friend which I can get. He wasn’t even allowed to phone me from the house though if she was in and did it on a walk or in the car.

I honestly think I would have felt a bit jealous about him living with his ex but then I thought it was a green flag he was so honest. He just seemed like a really nice, caring guy who was so big on communication and talking about our feelings and past life. We were both super excited for the date that should have been today and were communicating non stop with good chats and also flirting by this point… then I blew it all. On Thursday this week I had a really tough day at work and news about a death that made me a bit upset so I had a few drinks and I basically totally misunderstood something he had said in a text being drunk and upset state and then we straightened it out but I kept apologising. He was telling me you’re being silly all is fine with us but I wasn’t reading it and just kept saying stuff lie sorry I’m so stupid, hope I hadn’t ruined things… we went to bed and then in the morning I was cringing massively at myself and texted him sorry about last night and explained I’d been upset and told him was looking forward to meeting and that I’m sometimes a bit over emotional and not thinking clearly after couple of glasses of wine (bad I know you don’t have to say).

So this was then yesterday morning and he sent a long voicemail stating he had decided we shouldn’t meet as I had needed him emotionally and he hadn’t been able to meet my needs because he couldn’t call and say stop being silly as he was at home and that he thought that I deserved more than his current situation and that if we met we would fall for each other and he would hurt me when he couldn’t give me enough time etc… yes his situation was complicated but before my stupidness that night he had been keen to meet and see if we could feel our way so today I am genuinely depressed I probs threw away someone I had a lot of potential with. Honestly never clicked like we did with anyone ever (I know we didn’t actually meet but from all th texting, voice notes and calls we were so similar and gelled so much).

My friends at work immediately jumped on they think he isn’t actually single and the little time for me and not going near his house was because he was still in the relationship. He had explained though she hadn’t wanted the breakup and since they were now separated didn’t want to see who he was dating etc. His course was running at least another two years so he had to respect her wishes because he wouldn’t be able to move out and pay rent elsewhere until at least then.

Just feel so mad at myself for being an emotional tit and self deprecating one, who doesn’t read messages properly when tipsy. All my friends just keep harping on though that he probs wasn’t single and that anyway there were too many bad things like lack of time, no money to do stuff and they all said they couldn’t have a guy live with his ex and still do coupley stuff like watch tv together… but honestly I think they are just doing what friends do and trying to make me feel better.

Any perspectives as to whether you agree I totally screwed up or dodged a bullet welcome? Would you put up with a girl who lives with his ex and wasn’t available a lot?

Absolutely sounds like he is still in a relationship. You can do better than this.

Stop beating yourself up ....he is still with her...don't believe his BS.....you have done yourself a favour here...wish you well

Meteorite87 · 22/08/2026 13:47

I noticed you emphasised all his good points.
You could wonder why it took him "a week and a half" to tell you he was still living in very close quarters with his ex.

Or you could save yourself that emotional energy, send him a very brief reply then block him permanently.

TheSunBeatsDown · 22/08/2026 13:49

OP you are not good at reading men, and here you have overlooked many many red flags, as well as got over-invested before meeting.

I suggest you join Burned Haystacks dating on Facebook where you would have realised that this was a non-viable situation before even getting hopeful or arranging to meet. This frees you up to find men who are single and who are reliable in their behaviour and want relationships (this man was not one of these).

Also, if you need more help read 'He's just not that into you' as you will realise that when someone starts to make excuses about why they can't meet or pay, this is bad news and means they are 'just not that into you' even if they were single (which they were not).

I have had a man on the apps tell me the exact same story- only around a couple of weekends a month, very little or no money (so basically sex and nothing else), and it took a while for the penny to drop, but luckily it did and I didn't meet with him (he also made out he lived away, presumably with his wife!)

This guy told you a pack of lies- he's not separated, he's living as a couple with his wife and whether they have sex or not is not something you can verify- you weren't up for free twice monthly sex or emotional support for him, so he dumped you.

I'm sorry, but use the resources I've mentioned to help you spot these chancers, and to find the nice men of which there are a few, but you have to weed out these other types first.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 22/08/2026 13:52

He's married.
He's living with his wife but fully prepared to cheat on her.
This is way too much analysis anyway.
You haven't even met him yet.

He's dodged a bullet.
You've also dodged one.

Move on.

Topseyt123 · 22/08/2026 13:54

He is not single at all. He is still in the relationship. He lives with his partner.

Absolutely everything you said in your OP is a big red flag, but for some reason you seemed to see them as green ones.

Dump him by text or WhatsApp, or whatever messaging service you are using. Then just block him on everything.

He's a sleazy arse.

Dancer48 · 22/08/2026 13:57

You definitely dodged a bullet.

I'd be glad I found out so soon.

Single and can't even phone from his house...yeah right.

MarilynMerlot · 22/08/2026 14:15

I do find the level of investment you have in this guy who was wildly inconsistent and weird right from the off a bit worrying. What does the rest of your life look like? Are things generally stable? Do you have problems with self esteem?

AlphaApple · 22/08/2026 14:26

Sounds like a hairy handed trucker. You have no idea if anything he has told you is true.

i can’t believe you would talk to someone about what you like in bed when you haven’t even met him. Why would you provide wank fodder to strangers?

you are 42 fgs, wise up!

We didn’t talk about what we like in bed, that’s what I’m saying that’s what he didn’t do that other guys do

You've been had. Forget it. Move on.

whippersnapper55 · 22/08/2026 14:35

I think you've dodged a bullet, his set up is way too complicated and I could see you getting hurt and wasting years of your life with this man. Find someone who is free to date you in the normal way - and hold back from getting too involved and keen too quickly! Take your time getting to know someone, don't rush it.

Sunbeam18 · 22/08/2026 14:43

He doesn't sound like much of a catch, at best. Bizarre to be discussing how often you would be meeting and who would bf paying for things before you've even met! Red flag, of which there are many. Move on and expect better!

DoloresDelEriba · 22/08/2026 14:43

Sorry but my bullshitometer was off the scale on this one. You dodged a bullet.
You seem a bit gullible. Never forget, people lie.

HumptyDump · 22/08/2026 14:48

Surely you know he’s married? You’re seeing been flags when they’re clearly red to everyone with a module of common sense.

He’s sacked it off because he thinks you’re likely to get pissed and call him/turn up there or somehow track him down and his wife will find out

rocklivia · 22/08/2026 14:48

He's seen you can go " off the rails" when drunk and this has alerted him to the fact that you could get fiery with his situation living with his " ex". Don't be so naive in future and take on a waster like this. You were an option for him but he's seen potential trouble ( in his mind) . He's protecting his own position here. It's nothing to do with providing support for you.

PointedFirs · 22/08/2026 14:57

This is ridiculous, OP. You hadn’t even met him, and he had a list of excuses for why he’d barely be able to see you, wouldn’t be able to have you come to his house, wouldn’t be able to take you on dates because he had no money, was still living with his ex etc etc. I can’t help feeling you’re very naive for 42.

Also, a doctorate isn’t necessary to be a psychotherapist, and the overwhelming majority of psychotherapy degrees are part-time and everyone on them is working them around a FT job. Absolutely no need to quit and study FT.

TerrysCIockworkOrange · 22/08/2026 15:03

Green flags?! Dear sweet OP, I fear you may be colour blind

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 22/08/2026 15:06

SwisswolvesLilley · 22/08/2026 13:39

He is clearly still married and his fake honesty is no green flag, it’s the biggest red flag going. He was setting you up for a bit of sex on the side and I think you’ve had a lucky escape. Raise your standards and move on.

Also the whole chat about he couldnt afford dates. When you said you were living with your parents.. that would make you unavailable for a shag probably and he didn't want to deal with too much emotion.
He was trying to love bomb you into putting up with the whole situation.

Trust your friends. They were right.

AlphaApple · 22/08/2026 15:09

Sorry OP, I misread your initial post.

You are massively overinvested in this person. You still don’t know who they are. I guarantee you he’s lied to you about many, many things. Block, move on and forget him.

Ruthietuthie · 22/08/2026 15:12

Every single thing you thought was a green flag was actually a red flag. Your picker is seriously off.
Any time a new man makes you think anything apart from "ohhh... this is really great! I can't believe how easy this is! It's clear he really likes me! We are having the loveliest time" throw him back. It shouldn't be complicated. It's not your job to analyze him.
And yes, massively over invested. Scarily so. Did you even meet in person yet?

Beautifulbracelet · 22/08/2026 15:17

Sending hugs 🩷🩷🩷 Sorry you got pulled in by this guy. It doesn’t really matter now what we all think. Your feelings of hurt and confusion are valid. Hopefully you’ll meet someone who can give you their time and energy xx

Pashazade · 22/08/2026 15:20

Honestly most people training to be psychotherapists do so because they have issues. Life is too short. Run the other way!

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 22/08/2026 15:24

This man is one big red flag even if everything he says is true.

42 in a 14 yr relationship and not on the mortgage??? She clearly understood what she was tolerating working with...

He is a 42 yr old with no assets (he had ample opportunity to save) who cant support himself.

He shouldn't be dating he literally said he cant afford to so wtf is he up to???

Run dont walk from this nonsense.

Left eye said it best

LouiseMadetheBestBroccoliPasta · 22/08/2026 15:30

My goodness, OP, you are frighteningly gullible.

And very vulnerable to being scammed if not worse.

And until you get some therapy, please stay off the dating apps, they're FULL of predators.

Yoheresthestory · 22/08/2026 15:30

Come on OP! You need to wake up. He’s in a relationship. You’re also incredibly needy separate to the shitshow of believing his bullshit.

I think you need some time to get confidence and street smarts. But all of this is a mess. You need to learn to protect yourself a hell if a lot better.
