Estranged from my autistic university daughter after years of conflict

YAdaughter · Yesterday 19:22

YA daughter is 20 and at university.

She is autistic as am I. I would say the relationship hasn’t been good for about 5 years.
She was highly controlling of home life. What channel we could watch, and it steadily got worse as teenage years kicked in.

We tried to put in boundaries and basic rules and it just got really bad. Most of the really nasty stuff was directed towards me and not her Dad - he’s a quiet gentle giant.

She would call me a Karen, Terf, even a Tory (I voted labour) and any insult she could think of - I’ve been called mental, controlling, bitch and I’ve even been punched. She was failing at university socially (not academically) and no self care so GP recommended she move back home. It was vile.

Daily insults. No basic rules following. She literally used to say ‘what you looking at bitch? ‘ if I came downstairs in my own home. I’m a Headteacher in my day to day job. I hope I’m a good one and kind and empathetic. She would tell me I was stupid on a daily basis and to chill.

She would leave used sanitary towels left on the floor in the bathroom etc and she just treated us like an ATM. She went out late (3 am) and then phoned as she was on the street in city centre at night etc it wasn’t just what she said it me but how she said it and I kicked her out the following day and offered to book a hotel or something but that I couldn’t do it anymore - I had high blood pressure, panic attacks, and I was very ill. She agreed to leave and go to a friend but wouldn’t tell us which one. And this was a month ago. She said she is safe and won’t tell us where. She says at the moment we haven’t supported her and that we need to understand she wants space and if she wants money or a relationship she will phone. We did contact wellbeing and she had lied as she had said they were supporting her but the university had no record on her.

I lurch from loving her and missing her one minute to wanting to scream at her and hate her the next.

I’m having counselling but it’s not helping. She wanted a huge holiday and back in September we agreed and are due to go on a once in a lifetime safari next week. (She has a younger sister). She has emailed us to say she is 100% not coming as she needs to heal. I’m furious, sad, angry but I’m also glad she isn’t coming and I feel conflicted by that. She won’t talk to my lovely DH or respond to her sibling or grandmother etc DH says I need to focus on me and we need to focus on each other and our family. I’m so angry about the holiday we booked it for her mental health as it was the one she wanted. I feel so angry I’m such a shit mum and I failed to raise a nice person - it’s all on me isn’t it? I tried over the years to get support, diagnosis etc and no one really helped us as she was so clever and masked so heavily out of the home

I just let rip back though and told her how she had destroyed my love for her and… I literally screamed at her that she was a nasty abuser and she had to leave and I never wanted to see her again

OP, you certainly made the point. She must have had a massive shock. She’s right about needing time to think about it.

I suspect it’s a bit too soon to play happy families. Have a lovely holiday while DD does her own thing.

I somehow missed this bit! Yes, she definitely needs time away and you definitely need to go to therapy together.

misogynyisbigotry · Today 00:09

If she has been able to control her behaviour enough to get through secondary school and be admitted to and allowed to stay at university, she can learn to argue and disagree without resorting to abuse and misogynistic slurs. She isn't talking and behaving like that because she's autistic; she clearly has other issues and at 18+ she cannot be forced to get help. She doesn't have to like or respect you, but it is not unreasonable to say that she maintains a very basic level of civility and human decency while she's in the house or around family members, or she stays elsewhere.

ScrollingLeaves · Today 00:18

It isn’t your fault. You have done everything you could.

Get ready for your holiday and enjoy looking forward to it.

Try to keep the gate open for her (unless you just cannot take any more). You could say in a light off-hand way that the rest of you will be going on the safari, you understand she will not be coming, but to let you know if by any chance she changes her mind. Then don’t bring it up again.

I understand. Can you get some decent therapy for yourself to talk things through, help you cope and manage your own reactions. You need to take care of you. Sounds like you are losing yourself. It happened to me. Good therapy helped. Sending love and support.

I do a lot of campaigning for women's rights.
Anyway, the thread isn't really about that but I don't take terf as an insult.

But she uses it as an insult. Example /
Morning Karen (I’m drinking my tea on my sofa in the kitchen doing no harm to anyone)
she plonks herself down next to me and puts her feet across …. It’s meant to upset me, it’s meant to rile me.
Me - morning X (ignore the Karen comment deliberately)
Her - so what the TERF got planned today
me - ignore this
Her - oi Karen trans lives are human lives etc
Me / I’m not discussing this right now I’m drinking my tea
Her/ meanwhile the fact that trans rights are human lights pass you by….. wosh -/// their they go….

and so on and it’s daily. There is no rest from it.
But this is just one small part of her behaviour

I have contacted a lady who is gold standard therapist and had a good first meeting. We have some meetings planned after the holiday. It will be expensive but worth it - I hope

She only treats family like this because she knows you love her, seems like she is making a choice.

Because she is making a choice she has some control, just let her go and sort herself out.

You are not a bad person.

Clearly she does mean it as an insult and is doing things deliberately to wind you up and lash out at you. I would find that behaviour intolerable in my own house too. Whilst the way you phrased the way you spoke to her may not have been ideal. I think that consequences for her behaviour and attitude were required and in fact were probably overdue.

I had similar with anything everything, I honestly get it, it's hell to live with.
Feel free to pm me if you like.

deeahgwitch · Today 09:07

Is you dh her biological father @YAdaughter

SmolTiny · Today 09:13

She sounds like an awful dickhead.
I'm sure other people are on to her, too.
I really would leave her to it.

Castolaya · Today 09:15

I’m really sorry for your experience @YAdaughter her behaviour is very extreme.

I don’t think enabling her at this age will help the situation. I think she needs to continue to be an absolute shit until she exhausts herself out or more likely she exhausts any support network around her out.

Her own perspective on this is likely not a place where you can share a story on what is going on but maybe over time and with some more experience her position might soften a bit.

I have been at the end of a version of autism in a family member that feels similar to what I imagine NPD is like and I think it is an awful shame when people experience that version of autism which is from my experience of the condition thankfully is pretty rare. I suspect your daughter could be pretty similar certainly at the moment but at least she is at an age where change is a possibility.

Don’t worry it has totally stopped. Except phone contact I can’t cancel until 2028! I just have to write that off.

You can cancel the sim card and get a new one sent to your home. Cancel her flights for the holiday as well, you should at least get the tax back and it will mean she can't change her mind and turn up at the airport to ruin the trip for your other DD who is probably worrying about this. Onwards and upwards, sounds like she has a personality disorder but at 20 years of age your job is done and you can leave her to it.

That's just plain abuse and bullying. If your partner talked to you and treated you like that what would you call it?

I'd chase this person out of the room if not the house. It is abuse, how dare she and how can you just take it? Whats your husband saying when your duaghetr is being a total bitch like that? Is part of the problem that you are both too naice? I'd yell and then impose serious consequences after that. What has happened with youngsters who are so disrespectful to their parents?

howlsandmiouws · Today 09:32

There is no universe where id say morning x if the person had just been abusive to me.

principalskinna · Today 09:33

Just sending lots of love

I don't condone daughter's actions, but I'm surprised more people aren't commenting on this. If my mother said this to me, I'm not sure our relationship could recover

MrSchubertWhiskers · Today 09:50

Nothing but sympathy for you, op.
I agree with others she's taking as literal truth what you said when you exploded (we all have our limit, no judgement) - and to be honest I think most people would regardless of ASD.

What you need to do now, when you're ready, is message her and clearly point out the things you said which aren't true. And then tell her the opposite. Explain that you had so much pain and emotion bursting out you weren't aware of what you were saying at the time.

Don't apologise or deny the things you did mean. You still need to hold your boundaries.

fluffythecat1 · Today 10:01

MeThreeTwoOne · Yesterday 20:37

Been there done that.
My daughter was the same, very violent, abusive, controlling, constantly stole from me, did dangerous things etc.
Social Services were beyond useless, Dd refused to be assessed for PDA though I know she has it.
Eventually I told her to go, she did but we were ok for three more years.
She cut me out when she was 20, five years ago.
I miss her desperately, I love her, but I don't miss the abuse, I don't miss her behaviour.
It's taken a long time, but I'm happy and settled now, it's sad but it's the way it is.

Whatever you do, take care of yourself, you don't deserve to be treated badly and you will find peace and happiness.

She does sound like she has pathological demand avoidance or oppositional defiance disorder. These can be co-morbid with autism. Behaviour comes from an anxiety-based need to be in control. A friend’s daughter has this and had similar behaviour, complete disregard for the boundaries of of others. I do understand that it is a pathology and a condition, however as you’ve experienced, the extent of controlling, coercive and vindictive behaviour did make me cut contact like you are doing.

Yes maybe. 🤔 I have said repeatedly she is not allowed back here. We’ve given her over £10 K in the last year alone - she has a job as well. And we paid accommodation. She’s told me she had no money but hey ho - when you spent £2 K on concert tickets in London that is what happens!

Stop giving her cash. She might be autistic but she also sounds like a rude, entitled little madam.

Yes, definitely do not leave the door open for any last minute change of mind about her coming on the holiday. She’ll ruin it for you all. Cancel her ticket right now.

TwinklySquid · Today 10:12

As someone who has been estranged from family, I am wary of stories where the parents talk about how awful their kid is.

However, in this case you seriously have full justification to not engage in this relationship. Having read that morning conversation- that’s not on! At this point, I’d stop all contact. Don’t chase to find out where she is or what she’s doing. Cancel her flight for the trip. I’d even go a step further and change the locks if she has a key so she can’t crash and upset you while away.

principalskinna · Today 10:13

Agree with your husband if you don't focus on yourself and on him, you'll lose your marriage

Did you tell her at this point that she’s an abusive bully?

I think you did well not to throw your tea over her to be honest! Though that would get the reaction she’s aiming for I know
