Daughter of friend has approached me for help with an abortion

She's 17, I've known her since she was a small child.

She's 2 to 3 weeks pregnant m, said she has just missed her period.

Can't tell her mum.

Of course I have told her she should, that nothing is as bad as it seems.

What a position to be in.

I think it is wonderful that she recognised you to be a safe person to help her with this difficult thing.

if she doesn’t want to tell her mum I think you should still support her.

and if your friend later finds out and is upset, remind her that she could have done it on her own, instead someone that loves her helped her at this difficult time.
and would she have really preferred her to have been alone in it.

I have a DD this age and I've also had a 'secret' abortion at this age. I couldn't have told my parents so I went through it completely alone. It was brutal, I struggled for years. I'd hate the thought that my daughter wouldn't tell me but I'd be comfortable if she'd gone to another adult like yourself to support her. Thank you.

The appointment has been made.

She will talk to a doctor and a counsellor early in the week and then go in for the medication.

@Geesgirl Well done OP - this is so much easier (and safer) than a surgical termination many weeks hence. I hope you're all doing OK and sending big, virtual hugs. 🤗

@AngelicKaty thank you for your kind words.

Really? Are there still back street abortionists?

No. Course there aren’t. There are pills at home and other awful ways to do it if you are too scared to approach an adult/doctor and ask for help.

PassingStranger · 15/02/2025 20:27

Did she tell the father of the child she was pregnant?

Geesgirl · 15/02/2025 20:53

@PassingStranger yes. She did. She told him she wants an abortion.
