All the single men either or constantly travelling or love hiking...I like going to b&m

Dating apps are full of men who just want to travel or spend all their free time half way up a mountain.

Please tell me I'm not the only one that sees this?

I'd just like someone to go to ikea with on a Sunday....maybe a carvery as an extra treat. Not sweating my arse off pretending im enjoying 23 mile uphill walk

CharSiu · 14/05/2024 18:04

I do walks and actual hiking, that means a few hours, peeing in a bush and taking plenty of food.

heartbroken40 · 14/05/2024 18:09

@Thursdaygirl

walk= a walk in Hyde park/clapham common

Hike - 12-15 miles, normally uneven terrain, you need adequate footwear and it lasts between 4 and 6 hours

Holiday - trip to Canary Islands drinking and soaking the sun
Travelling - 1 different city every day with visits to museums/monuments, no drinking, lots of optimised driving to explore as much as possible. Possibly you speak the language (I'm fluent in several foreign languages for example). You prepare in advance by reading the history of the country etc

SparrowFeet · 14/05/2024 18:20

I'd just call that a 15 mile walk @heartbroken40 !
But I'm derailing sorry..

Thursdaygirl · 14/05/2024 18:25

So hiking and travelling could mean walking round ikea then driving to the carvery?!

@appendix just thinking about your brother here!

wiseoldsnail · 14/05/2024 18:28

SparrowFeet · 14/05/2024 17:56

Anybody who says they like going on hikes instead of 'walking' is someone that I know would annoy me.
Same with 'travelling' instead of 'going on holiday'

Very good point. And a holiday and walks sounds much more manageable!

OP posts:
ClipClopperDontStopper · 14/05/2024 18:33

I'm not exactly going to put ikea and a carvery on my profile 😂😂😂

You should though! Add it to your profile in a humorous way. Loads of people love those places, cos they're always packed. So surely you'll find some likeminded bloke who'll want nothing more than to build a Flinnginskubblepump with you on Saturday and share a roast beef dinner on a Sunday.

@SparrowFeet
Hikes and walks aren't the same thing. The former is usually more challenging. Longer duration/distance, harder terrain. You're right that walks sounds more manageable - they actually are.

To me, 'travelling' implies that they like visiting new places . Whereas 'going on holiday' implies just getting out of the UK. People who go the same few places every year... 'going on holiday'. New and exotic destinations - or well, at least 'new' - travelling.

Maybe it would be more helpful if people specified what they actually enjoy, or gave some examples. If it's being in nature, well you don't need to 'hike' for that plenty of lovely walks. Similarly, if it's city breaks, beautiful places, galleries etc... more specific than just 'travelling' and gives you a sense of personality.

Broad descriptors are always very generic and low effort IMO.

Dillydollydingdong · 14/05/2024 18:39

How about going for a run on the dp's motorbike, then stopping somewhere for Sunday lunch?

BusyMintCrab · 14/05/2024 18:47

OP I’m the same as you 😆 and so are all my friends! A wee Costa and Dunelm trip is the best way to spend an afternoon 😂

I did once try to date a hiker man but it was a nightmare because he could only meet in the week as he would head off hiking all weekend, every weekend.

SnuffyAndBigBird · 14/05/2024 18:48

Interesting because if I were to become single, and ended up on an app, I’d want a man that likes travelling and hiking up mountains.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 14/05/2024 19:53

I met my DP online and his hobbies when I met him were chucking himself out of planes, motorbikes, hiking, he was in a band who were touring Europe etc etc. All true and all much more effort than I can be arsed with. He also didn't boast about them on the dating app.

He ditched all the hobbies soon after we met as he just preferred spending time with me and all the mad hobbies were just because he had nothing better to do with his time. He enjoys a nice trip round ikea and the garden centre now 😄

Ha! Brisk walk to the pub followed by exercising his right arm by repeatedly lifting a pint….

StarDolphins · 14/05/2024 20:24

I’m in a cold sweat thinking about walking up a mountain or hiking. I would rather go to B&M’s & I HATE this shop!

I want to go on a (flat pavement) dog walk then a nice meal & drinks where he can show me how hilariously funny & nice he is.

I’m with you op, I just like a simple pottering life with nice stuff thrown in.

I would also look very unattractive on a mountain hike.

FriendsBadBoyfriend · 14/05/2024 20:29

I have to say, I do find these sorts of threads where people moan about this rather bizarre.

Dating apps are at their very core, very superficial - because they're about making yourself look as attractive/interesting as possible. It goes without saying that photos of some activities are better at this than others. Plus, chances are, you'd scroll by a profile of someone who'd only got selfies of themselves at the pub/in their car etc as being "too boring".

And just because people have certain hobbies/interests, it doesn't mean theydo them 24/7, 365 days a year. A dating profile is a tiny snapshot of someone's life, with photos generally picked to either make themselves look good and/or act as a conversation starter.

I'm not sure what you're really expecting to see from dating apps, but there's generally not going to be many profiles of people describing their favourite activity as going to IKEA...

I thought by B&M you meant bondage and masochism!

Me too! I was like "you go girl, tell it like it is"!

The issue is that the dating apps are full of these men. And these men aren't my type and I won't be there's which is absolutely fair enough.

I'm more moaning about the fact that this is all that's available 😂

It just gets a bit frustrating constantly swiping left to a picture of a mountain with some random dude posing at the top who you can barely see.

Home stays for a month in Azerbaijan is travelling. A week at an AI in the Canaries is a holiday in my book.

I like both so 🤷‍♀️

Kalevala · 14/05/2024 20:55

Ikea isn't a hobby, it's a shop, like Lidl. I go there if I want to buy something they stock. Shopping is a chore like vacuuming or doing the laundry. Building ikea furniture is perhaps bordering on hobby if you are skilled at it and would offer to do it for free for others.

womanwithissues · 14/05/2024 21:00

This thread is making me feel a bit better about myself. I do feel that many of the guys who do OLD at least where I am (Yorkshire) have a lot of free time. And not four teenagers at home as I do. The last guy I had a situationship with did a different thing every night of the week. Mens' group, gym, ice skating, axe throwing.

I've questioned why I find it intimidating and makes me feel less than. But given the extra time and money I still don't want to go hiking or ice skating. And because I have four teens, I don't have money for "travelling" either or nice restaurants. It's fine that that's what these men want. I'm just not cut out for OLD in my fifties.

Kalevala · 14/05/2024 21:00

wiseoldsnail · 14/05/2024 14:28

You're exactly right. This is another thing I've noticed - a lot of these men state that they have children yet their profile states that they spend weekends camping or hiking. Immediate red flag right there. As you say, probably the result of a failed marriage.

I took my child camping and hiking. They are pretty child friendly activities.

😂😂 you have a point. Though I'm open to other places...I like The Range also.

What I mean is I'd just like to be with someone where it's relaxed....chilled. Not constantly pushing yourself on an adventure.

Half the men (in my case) are constantly travelling which is great for them yet say they want a long term partner.

I'm the same OP. I dated someone that made it seem like he like to do activities occasionally but also really enjoyed relaxing at home and and going out for a meal every once in a while. However I quickly found out he had to be doing something 24/7. Eating out for every meal, doing the next adventure, walking trails, golf, socializing, going to festivals and events. if he was sitting still at home I could feel the anxious energy seeping from him from not doing something active. We never did just chill out together and play a board game, or cook a meal, or whatever. Most of our time together was doing stuff, it got boring and old to me over time. I felt like I had to be this active on-the-go girlfriend and it wore me out.

eventually he kicked me to the curb cause i wasn't adventurous enough. After that I have been very wary of online profiles that show the guy doing activities or if they mention a slew of activities in their profile. I'm older now and don't have the energy to pretend like I want to be on the go all the time.

I am also in Yorkshire - I see exactly what you do.

I have 3 children at home and I'm exhausted doing it on my own. It doesn't mean I haven't got the energy to get to know someone because I'd love nothing more. But getting to know someone through constant adventures is a no from me.

As a side note, I do get very frustrated when I mention I have children and the man replies with 'oh so you don't get much free time then'....like it's an issue for them when he has children himself.

I don't think I'm cut out for online dating either! I'll stick to hopefully finding him in IKEA 🤞🏻

Me too! Glad it wasn’t just me. I love lusting over plants at garden centres but when I start OLD I bet I don’t mention that. And it really is my biggest hobby!

mynamechangemyrules · 14/05/2024 21:22

Haha this made me laugh OP...
'Want to travel the world, just need someone to do it with 😉'

Ok love, well I travelled the world for the past 25 years and right now I'm too busy looking after my children while their father regresses to his early twenties, so sorry, the local pub and a walk on the common is all I can muster right now 😂 ...if I can find a babysitter.

Answer to 'where will we find you after work?'
'Hitting the gym 💪🏼'
Every single one of them?! Are there enough gyms in the world for all these aging fitness enthusiasts?

LadyHavelockVetinari · 14/05/2024 21:24

Have you seen the ARMS on these paddle boarding, bouldering men though? They look like greek statues, I fancy them all. But the truth is I would hate any of these activities and do not have the body to match their hard earned muscles. So all in all, I'm realistically also Team B&M.
