Dating apps are full of men who just want to travel or spend all their free time half way up a mountain.

Please tell me I'm not the only one that sees this?

I'd just like someone to go to ikea with on a Sunday....maybe a carvery as an extra treat. Not sweating my arse off pretending im enjoying 23 mile uphill walk

You sound great. I'll pass on the carvery so long as I can have meatballs in IKEA. 😃

Puppuccino · 14/05/2024 14:05

(And I love IKEA, there seem to be two distinct campsGrin)

I think so, I hate Ikea and shopping in general, but love a bit of sea swimming, hill walking, as much travel as I can afford. Luckily I married someone compatible!

Be very careful of these action men. I have been around mountain biking, running, climbing etc most of my adult life. If there is one thing i have found its that they can be very self centred people. Their bikes, their climbing equipment and their free time is hugely important to them.

They have a huge divorce rate as they tend to ignore/neglect their home lives, including wives and children.

Each to their own but i would prefer someone honest, healthy and similar interests over someone who looks great because all they are interested in is their hobby

You're exactly right. This is another thing I've noticed - a lot of these men state that they have children yet their profile states that they spend weekends camping or hiking. Immediate red flag right there. As you say, probably the result of a failed marriage.

@wiseoldsnail I think there's a market here.
Ikea Dating ©
You go to IKEA and wear a specific colour lanyard.
Red = female looking for male or male looking for female
Blue = male looking for male
Green = female looking for female
Yellow = staff member..... don't attempt to chat them up - they're busy.
If eyes meet across the kitchen accessories you know you both like to cook and potentially future ❤️.

Love this idea!

On jt - I shall report back 😊

Careful, my husband thought me putting hobbies of rugby, gym and running would be a once in bluemoon thing and added to make me look good, his life is now ruled by rugby.

B&M is great, but it isn’t a hobby or interest, plus I quite like opposite interests, you can learn something new, but it also gives you an excuse not to join a hike etc if you don’t fancy it.

Ooo another one that's interested.....form an orderly queue gentleman.

A lot of them will be talking bollox, for years on my CV it said that I enjoyed swimming, aerobics and travelling. I didn’t. I enjoyed eating Doritos and watching Big Brother.

mitogoshi · 14/05/2024 14:38
Grin

Or fishing, posing in front of cars they don't own failing that "running".

I snagged a decent one who takes me to Morrisons (quite a drive) for funGrin though do let him go to Halfords first. I haven't braved IKEA since 2010!

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/05/2024 14:40

I love travelling, it's a defining feature. But I leave DH at home and go to Honduras or Chile on my own or with an adventurous female friend. I even went with my mum to places he baulked at.

Some adventurous people like an anchor at home, keeping the fires burning while they test their travel insurance.

Never a cyclist though, I can assess from MN that they are never ever a good bet. No MAMILs here.

Nottherealslimshady · 14/05/2024 14:43

Men and women alike all love hiking on a weekend on online dating 🤣 I think it's code for "I'm not a big drinker" in all honesty.

That sounds amazing to me.....congrats on your trips to Morrisons!

People talk shite on dating apps.

TennisLady · 14/05/2024 14:55

Well, people can enjoy hiking and travelling and still enjoy a wander around the shops and a carvery! However, do you often pose for photos in B&M or whilst eating a carvery? Probably not. So people will upload the photos of them out and about.

SauronsArsehole · 14/05/2024 14:56

The fishing bit wouldn’t bother me too much. Bringing good eating home is fine by me. I actually want a man with a hobby. Hobby = not being an arse when retiring. Though I’m wary of cyclist and runner hobbies and most men with head to toe Lycra collections.

however he needs to have a healthy balance between hobby and home life.

and no heavy gamers. Fuck me I like to game and can do a heavy session every couple of weeks or so but men that sit and game for 8hrs a day 7 days a week. Get in the sea.

To be fair it's probably not the photos that put me off as I can understand people want to make themselves look interesting.

I suppose it's when you can upload say a maximum of 8 photos and they are all the same with a bio that states they love adventure.

At the end of the day, these men aren't for me and I realise that. It's just a shame that there's not much else on left the shelf!

Are you looking at very middle class types?! Those sorts love a triathlon.

Better off looking for a more WC guy

Stressyfab · 14/05/2024 15:04

The only two types of men I’ve ever seen on OLD are men who climb and men who fish.
Hard pressed to find any other interests on there!

This is so true. MC men proving they aren't soft as shite, by running marathons.

MiddleAgedDread · 14/05/2024 15:12

just me that's happy to be dating a marathon runner then?!? 😂 I guess everyone's idea of "date night" isn't 8 miles after work. He ain't half got some stamina though ;)

Foxblue · 14/05/2024 15:23

appendix · 14/05/2024 14:13

Exactly this. My slothful brother has a profile that solely consists of pictures of him doing active pursuits. Frankly the 5 pics are the only 5 things he's done in the last TWO YEARS!! This is because he only wants slim women (despite being pudgy and lazy himself) so presents himself in a way which he hopes will attract them.

It's been a failure.

Women have eyes and he's not a fine specimen in Lycra.

He'd have more luck being honest and swiping on women who'd also want an afternoon in the pub followed by a curry. However he's obsessed with having a slim girlfriend so he's now 35 and single for 8 years.

I have known, throughout my life, 3 different men like this! Not necessarily dating profile wise, but all men wanting women who are are in fantastic shape when they themselves are not...

Blackcats7 · 14/05/2024 15:29

It would be so refreshing to read a completely honest dating profile. In my days of trying OLD my profile said that I am quite boring and mostly like to be pottering at home. Unfortunately because I had also written quite truthfully that I was a nurse and had horses most of the messages I received solely focused on whether I could wear my uniform on a date or if I would like to roll about in the hay barn in my boots and jodhpurs.

Eleganz · 14/05/2024 15:33

I know it sounds crazy, but there are lots of straight men who don't like shopping for flat pack furniture. Who knew?

Also, what people put on dating profiles is all spin.

PanicAttax · 14/05/2024 15:35

Wow, not been on a dating site in years but when I was it was all fat bald guys holding fish in football shirts.

I honestly don't think I've met many men who like travelling, but I wish I had!

PanicAttax · 14/05/2024 15:36

OP maybe change the settings of where you are based - if you are London you've got guys with a lot of disposable income and competitive holidaying going on perhaps?
