A true definition of 'single' and why it kicks ass

Capital 'S' 'Single' should be defined as a state in which you're not a) still pining for an ex, b) pining for a particular crush, or c) pining for a relationship generally.

Because let me tell you, it feels fantastic. It feels like what human adulthood is actually meant for.

Nature doesn't give a flying fuck whether you're happy, it only cares that you reproduce. That's why it curses you with overwhelming lust, jealousies, you name it.

And that's why you wake up one morning and your life has become nothing other than a series of reactions and obligations - some of which might be irreversible.

That's why you can intellectually know someone isn't worth your time, doesn't respect you, whatever - yet your 'heart' still leaps when they text.

Nature just wants those damn babies.

Next time you break up, I recommend NOT looking to someone else to fill the void AND until you're truly, undeniably, non-negotiably OVER your ex - if only just to experience the feeling of emancipation and freedom for a while.

You can always get back to the drama then if you want. But at least you'll be doing it with your eyes open.

even things like singing along to the radio

I am able to sing again, mentally and physically.

I just went and got myself an iced coffee and a brownie. Eating them in the garden with my feet up. What's something you really enjoy treating yourself to?

After a tough workout in the gym, I’m now sitting in my favourite coffee shop down the road with a big cappuccino 😀

I've been gardening today. If you'd told me when I was in my 20s that I would be single in middle age and take up gardening I would have been horrified. I thought then that life was all about being fabulously presented at all times, being a career girl, fawned over by men, find a husband and live happily ever after together. Many many failed relationships later and I have dirty clothes, hair in a bandana, muck on my face, radio 4 on in the background and a glass of wine waiting for me when I finish and I am the happiest I have ever been in my life.

I’ve got an aubergine curry on the hob to be portioned out & frozen once cooled, & sourdough rolls baking in the oven. I’ve fixed a couple of bookcases to walls to make them safer as cat climbing frames & I’m seriously considering a nap before tea 😀

Wow! This is a truly amazing thread. Thanks @Stratos72 for starting it.

I have never been single as an adult, I met DH at 18 and it worked out for us.

I was very interested to read the initial responses that chime with my view that if DH died or we did separate I would not ever pursue another relationship. DGM is 101 and GF left her when she was 25 with 5 children. She never had another man and has honestly been an extraordinary happy and healthy woman all these years. She says she was able to focus on children, g-children and herself which gave her longevity and resilience.

It's been very interesting to see @shuggles force his way into the conversation, demanding answers and attention, demanding his voice and view dominate and are heard. Could there be a more perfect example of why many women are better off single? 😂

How anyone drinks hot drinks after workout is beyond me! 😅
I sweat so much even after workout, I can’t drink anything than ice cold water for next two hours 😭!

Once I’ve finished, showered & changed I’m normally desperate for caffeine!
