Husband randomly steals

I don’t even know where to post this and I feel incredibly stupid right now because I never even realised.
It just started because I complained about some random fucking carpet that was blocking my way in the garage. So apparently he has a habit of “just taking” things when he feels like it, and I never even realised. I don’t know why but I feel utterly ashamed and also shocked that he doesn’t see any issue with it. His friend was at our house when this came out (actually revealed it) and he also thinks it’s hilarious and “just something he’s always done”.
My husband has a very decent salary and this is not a money issue. I know that people seem to do things like stealing slippers and shampoo in hotels but a carpet?? It’s not even the worst, and I am sure I have only heard about the tip of the ice berg.
Clearly this can’t be normal? Is this something others have come across?

What a freak. How does this not put you all the way off him?

worked in a foodbank for 4 years... there's families so skint that they cannot get to the foodbank, especially rurally

I would understand stealing to feed one's kids in a scenario where there were no options, but there usually are options not to do that. Until recently there were less food banks but there are now loads in the UK. They will be in virtually any village, ones run by churches etc, and/or other food projects.

Edited

There is also a limit on how many times you can use food bank..trussel trust. Its 3x in a 6 month period. So theres not always options out there...

This is so bizarre. He stole a chicken? As in a LIVE, walking, clucking chicken?! Who does that? Stealing inanimate objects is one thing (not acceptable obvs but still) but to take someone's pet chicken is another thing entirely. I take it the guy is mostly devoid of empathy in general life?

My sister has done this all her life. Stolen from family, friends and shops. I used to hide stuff when I knew she was visiting. She'd take bits of jewellery, clothes and make up. She doesn't even wear make up.

No one in her family has had any contact with her for a long time. She no longer has friends. She's married to a man who has equally disturbing mental health issues.

She has never had any need to steal. We were never particularly well off, but not poor. She's now very well off.

As far as I am aware she has never been caught shoplifting, however she has been sacked from several jobs. The reasons she gave never made sense to me. Maybe it was stealing.

It's very sad.

I have a relative who is very similar but in their case it's connected to addiction too. When they're sober they don't do it but when they relapse they can't be trusted in shops or other people's houses, it's a nightmare because I still love them.

There’s different levels of theft so say someone was stealing meat to sell for drugs then that’s scum of the earth material ,but if say a classy lady was syphoning off fortunes from an employer to pay for private school fees then I feel that is okay because she’s putting it to good use , she shouldn’t be treated the same as the drug man

I was about to draft a long rangy reply to this to say you've got it the wrong way round.....

Then I realised you've clearly posted it for a reaction and are taking the piss so I won't bother

Absolutely this. Unbelievable.

@betterangels Yes, a lot of it is highly unbelievable. Smile

Fulshaw · 23/11/2023 19:22

And you just overlook this?

I was thinking that too. Also that this 'middle class thieving' as it's been coined is a stupid thing for people to do. They are traceable, infinitely trackable and have so much to lose in terms of jobs and reputation.

Retailers and police would find these thieves 'low hanging fruit' and go after them rather than the smash and grab thieves who are likely to be violent.

Stupid behaviour and I wouldn't tolerate it from my husband, it really would be the end,

I had your outlook on life @Thehighestmaintenance . Then God found me (he never didn't know where I was of course) and it's not as easy to square fraud etc with my conscience now.

Even if you don't become a god bothered, most people aren't as clever as they think. When the fraud comes out, having a parent convicted of fraud will undo the benefit of private education.

Thehighestmaintenance · 24/11/2023 11:41

OBJE . I think my example was a tad extreme but I was trying to show that “ needs” and “wants” differ when it comes to stealing. Nobody “ needs” drugs but a private education is really only available whilst you are of a school age, and some parents me included wont even consider sending their child to a community school so if they can’t afford the fees what would you suggest they do ?? Earning the money legally would obviously be better but if the opportunity to steal came up I’d have to take that chance. I’d rather have a criminal record and children I can say attend private schools than a clean record and kids mixing with mainstream kids no thanks. Btw all the politicians and big companies steal one way or another I’m not saying it’s right but you have to be ruthless nowadays to succeed.

porridgeisbae · 24/11/2023 11:57

You're worried your kids might be influenced by criminals, but they would be being raised by criminals.

Thehighestmaintenance · 24/11/2023 11:57

Btw just to be clear I haven’t stolen anything since I was a teenager ( wine gums) but I would not hesitate and happily do prison time to keep my spawn at St Bede’s

Fulshaw · 24/11/2023 12:05

@Thehighestmaintenance The problem is that to you, stealing is justified for your child’s education. Someone else might feel justified because they need a car to get to work. Someone else because they work hard all year but still can’t afford an Xbox for Christmas. And so on…

So if someone nicks your car tomorrow or breaks into your house and steals your Xbox, would you be ok with it?

Bloom15 · 24/11/2023 12:10

cutfrompaper · 24/11/2023 05:30

I don't think it is a horrible or unfair thing to say actually
It doesn't matter how hard things are , you don't know other people's circumstances. Maybe they are doing it worse than you . Stealing is never ok , there is never any justification for it

Tesco isn't going to go bankrupt because someone steals to feed themselves and their family because there is no other option

WTAF!!!

porridgeisbae · 24/11/2023 12:21

There's always another option- loads of broke people don't steal. Even stealing from Tesco has a knock on effect on NMW people working there, or food prices for us all etc. Plus burning in hell isn't anyone's dream future.

porridgeisbae · 24/11/2023 12:24

@houseneedscleaning I know, right? Some people start with a 'T' and rhyme with vole. But some of them can be kind of amusing. Smile

Yalta · 24/11/2023 12:33

For all these people including the dh in this who do it for the thrill, have you considered ADHD as being the cause.

Thehighestmaintenance · 24/11/2023 12:40

FULSHAW . I haven’t actually stolen anything, I was trying to emphasise how important getting a private education is and I’d go even further criminally if I had to .I would happily go to prison if it meant keeping my 2 Dcs away from rappers who are keen to stab and violent gang girls who frequent these community schools

porridgeisbae · 24/11/2023 12:43

@Thehighestmaintenance You say you haven't commited crime for what you want, but your husband has.
