Husband randomly steals

I don’t even know where to post this and I feel incredibly stupid right now because I never even realised.
It just started because I complained about some random fucking carpet that was blocking my way in the garage. So apparently he has a habit of “just taking” things when he feels like it, and I never even realised. I don’t know why but I feel utterly ashamed and also shocked that he doesn’t see any issue with it. His friend was at our house when this came out (actually revealed it) and he also thinks it’s hilarious and “just something he’s always done”.
My husband has a very decent salary and this is not a money issue. I know that people seem to do things like stealing slippers and shampoo in hotels but a carpet?? It’s not even the worst, and I am sure I have only heard about the tip of the ice berg.
Clearly this can’t be normal? Is this something others have come across?

How do you steal a carpet unnoticed?

Newliferequired · 23/11/2023 19:08

Yes my husband steals stuff eg. Items in a grocery shop or a tshirt. He has plenty of money and does it for a thrill. He says it's because he grew up poor and its true he did but this as a reason is bullshit

He rolled it up and left. It wasn’t in a shop.

Tricky... He never told you about this so now there's a big issue around trust. In your shoes I'd say 'I can't live with someone who steals things' and see how he responds? If he gets angry and defensive you can suggest counselling. If you don't make a stand now you will look like you condone his behaviour. Good luck!

Frasers · 23/11/2023 19:19

That would give me the right ick.

Fulshaw · 23/11/2023 19:21

What kind of things? Like stuff from hotels and pubs? Or shoplifting? Or from friends’ houses?

wited · 23/11/2023 19:21

Carpet from where? Do you mean a rug?

Honestly, 🤮

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 23/11/2023 19:22

He rolled it up and left 😬 but why?! Sounds like he might have a problem?!

And you just overlook this?

caringcarer · 23/11/2023 19:23

I just couldn't live with him. The only possible reason to steal is if you are literally starving and have no money for food.

Yeah sorry I guess it’s a rug, but it’s quite big so I called it a carpet

I could never trust someone who had such a poor moral compass.

He had a justification but it makes no difference. As I said it’s not even an isolated incident. And yes I don’t think this can be normal

Where did he take the rug from?

mugofstew · 23/11/2023 19:46

Where did he steal the rug from?
What is he going to do with it?

LylaLee · 23/11/2023 19:46

What, he took it from someone's house?

Fannyfiggs · 23/11/2023 19:49

I think context here is key.

Did he steal the rug from someone's house or office?

Did he dig it out of a skip?

Is it out the back of a lorry?

Is it a nice rug? Does it go with your colour scheme?

Does he take orders?

Lotyt · 23/11/2023 19:55

I’ve got a a vision of some bloke walking down the street with a rug under his arm. It’s hard enough carrying one of them when they are wrapped!

Sopora · 23/11/2023 20:26

He did take it from someone’s house because they apparently owed him money but he knew they wouldn’t pay it.
It’s not about the rug but about the principle

wtf?😳

mugofstew · 23/11/2023 20:29

So was he acting as an unofficial bailiff.
That will land in trouble at some point.

How did they come to be owing him money?

Is your DH a loan shark?

Cherrysoup · 23/11/2023 20:31

What else has he taken? Does he only take stuff from mates’ houses? Bizarre!
