DH farting problem ruining relationship

So basically what it says on the tin. Married 4 years, everythings fine, really cant conplain at all except for the farting issue. And yes he's had all sorts of tests, diet changes, nothing helps 😣 he's massively self conscious of it, smell is putrid to the point of making me feel sick, and so embarrassing when visiting parents or with friends, I cant seem to get the stench out of the house.
Just to be clear he doesnt eat junk food as im not a fan, we eat healthy, weirdly it seems the more nervous he gets about his flatulence the worse it gets. The weekend was the last straw, I had to sleep downstairs as the smell in our room was disgusting.
He's had a colonoscopy, showed nothing, stool samples etc, theyre saying ibs as he's other wise healthy apart from the putrid farting which is ruining everything.

How does he cope at work?

LBF2020 · 29/11/2022 03:08

Get him on Charcoal tablets

Pinkbonbon · 29/11/2022 03:11

Has he tested for lactose intolerance or any other food intolerances?

Forever42 · 29/11/2022 03:20

Maybe it's hard for me to tell as an outsider but it seems like you are making it a bigger deal than it needs to be? Some people do fart a lot. If he has been subjected to medical tests etc and they have shown nothing, he eats a healthy diet etc, what else do you expect him to do? Do others notice it? Maybe you have a sensitive sense of smell?

You say it gets worse if he is nervous about it so perhaps you need to try not mentioning it for a while. Anxiety can make sensitive stomachs worse. Are there any room deodoriser etc that might help with the smell issue?

BadNomad · 29/11/2022 03:57

Can he not go outside when he needs to pass wind? Or is it involuntary? I have IBS, but I can control when I poof, so I don't know if your DH can't help it or if he just doesn't care to go do it elsewhere. You say he eats healthfully. High fibre foods will cause excessive gas. But it's the green veg and animal protein that causes the foul-smelling wind. Try eating less meat.

goadyolddough · 29/11/2022 04:04

I couldn't put up with it.

My husband and I don't fart in front of each other as we both hate it. When people say they can't help it. I always ask if they would do it in an interview then?

Get him to the doctors and buy him some Windeze!

Morestrangethings · 29/11/2022 04:25

A Probiotic yoghurt might help.

FiveMins · 29/11/2022 04:28

Get him to try the fodmap diet and work out what is causing it. If he can't be bothered then I would consider leaving is OK.

Or keto. No smell at all.

And yes, how does he cope at work?

Shasha3709 · 29/11/2022 04:35

Peppermint capsules no need for the expensive branded ones. Holland and Barrett do there own.
I can tell you I went through this. It’s awful. 3 days in got less. And less. By week 4. Nothing no smell just normal flactulance. It’s horrific people think how can it be that bad. But I know I lived it. For years.

Heavylifting · 29/11/2022 04:38

Has he had testing for Celiac Disease? CD is caused by problems with the small intestine as gluten damages it. Serious gut issues are a common symptom. It’s extremely under diagnosed.

WeeLors · 29/11/2022 04:57

I second charcoal tablets. My DH went through a stage of farts being absolutely rotten through the night to the point where I had to leave the room to sleep. No idea what caused it but we thought maybe just some kind of microbial imbalance in the gut (so probiotics may help too). Charcoal tablets worked really well within a few days and the terrible smelling ones never came back (a few years ago now).

loislovesstewie · 29/11/2022 05:24

I was going to say coeliac disease, my adult child has it and sometimes the smell is appalling. Sticking to the correct diet, i.e. no gluten and the stink ,well, stops.

Quench · 29/11/2022 05:25

I have this problem so I sympathise (I have IBS and IBD). As a pp said, try the Fodmap diet - it made a huge difference to me!

Blowyourowntrumpet · 29/11/2022 05:44

But him some fennel seeds or charcoal tablets

daretodenim · 29/11/2022 06:18

I don't think some posters realise how awful the smell can be when someone is ill. My FIL has serious intestinal and stomach issues and his farts are nuclear. I have honestly never smelled anything so bad. My body wants to vomit but also freezes in a kind of shock. There's no joke that can be made because it's so seriously awful. He has his own loo in the house which I used once in an emergency. It was scrupulously clean but the stench was literally eye watering.

So OP I absolutely feel for you both. You for having to suffer it and him for not being able to stop. If there's nothing visually wrong in scans etc then I'd agree to look at diet changes. Elimination of dairy as a first point would be a good starting point and then the FODMAP. It may also be a reaction to more than one thing. Good luck to both of you.

chikp · 29/11/2022 06:20

Charcoal tablets/pants

Has he considered yakult or similar to see if that assists?

KangarooKenny · 29/11/2022 06:22

Try the little bottles of bug drinks, Yakult etc.

MrsJephson · 29/11/2022 06:23

Has he cut out dairy? I know someone who resolved this (it was an eye stingingly bad issue too) when they cut out dairy. They also felt more energetic too. Now if they do eat dairy they instantly get stomach cramps which they didn't before. It's worth a try with the fodmap.

MamaFirst · 29/11/2022 06:25

When you say you eat healthily, maybe that's the problem. Too many veg can irritate IBS etc. Try eliminating things from his diet.

Outtasteamandluck · 29/11/2022 06:25

I know it sounds daft....hear me out.....but I used to suffer and I purely by chance made a connection to tap water.

I switched to bottled water (I know not helpful to the environment) and I wouldn't say I'm cured but it's helped a lot!

Yes try cutting our certain veg there's probably a list online. Onions?

IncompleteSenten · 29/11/2022 06:29

Maybe he should go outside to break wind.

Snnowflake · 29/11/2022 06:34

I think it could be anxiety. Whenever I have to travel by plane - although I could swear I'm not nervous I always get wind which I am terrified of producing in public. Ditto other social occasions. If he got medication to calm him or seriously started using relaxaion techniques or meditation he might improve. Perhaps his GP might give him something.
