DH farting problem ruining relationship

So basically what it says on the tin. Married 4 years, everythings fine, really cant conplain at all except for the farting issue. And yes he's had all sorts of tests, diet changes, nothing helps 😣 he's massively self conscious of it, smell is putrid to the point of making me feel sick, and so embarrassing when visiting parents or with friends, I cant seem to get the stench out of the house.
Just to be clear he doesnt eat junk food as im not a fan, we eat healthy, weirdly it seems the more nervous he gets about his flatulence the worse it gets. The weekend was the last straw, I had to sleep downstairs as the smell in our room was disgusting.
He's had a colonoscopy, showed nothing, stool samples etc, theyre saying ibs as he's other wise healthy apart from the putrid farting which is ruining everything.

Is he better on a non vegan diet? Has he tried that?

Dello · 29/11/2022 13:34

As others have said

  • check helicobactor pylori - this isn’t a normal stool culture test
  • fodmap diet
  • try keto
SpacePotato · 29/11/2022 13:43

Was he like this before meeting you?
I mean before you put on on a vegan diet?

If not then you need to stop policing his bloody diet.

TheCatterall · 29/11/2022 13:50

Just because you have a valet by/vegan diet doesn’t mean that in itself isn’t causing it.

when did this issue start? Has he had it since childhood or recent years?

has he done the fodmap diet?

I have friends that react to root vegetables with terrible wind. Another whom certain beans and pulses cause absolute agony and bloating..

stress is also a massive factor. So the more a big deal is made of the smell etc. the worse he could get.

my partner supports me though recurring shingles , IBS, all sorts. Worrying that my partner wouldn’t support me through an illness would devastate me.

he isn’t doing this on purpose. Get him nutritional help from someone qualified in nutrition and be open to the fact that his diet may need to change including the vegan aspect.

GreyhairedHobbit · 29/11/2022 13:50

I would get some meat into hime. Some people cannot digest all the beans and pulses. Some of the vegan stuff has chicory in it which is horrible to the gut.

BaconMassive · 29/11/2022 13:52

I once did a fart that sounded exactly like the start of the theme tune to kids TV show Johnny Briggs.

Hope this helps.

IaltagDhubh · 29/11/2022 13:55

Get him to ask his gp for a referral for a SEHCAT scan. My dd had this issue for years and eventually, after seeing this scan mentioned on here, I asked her gastro consultant about it. We were still dismissed for another 3 years, but finally it turned out she has the most severe bile acid malabsorption. Within days of starting the right dose of medication, her symptoms improved about 90%.

OldFan · 29/11/2022 13:57

vegan doesn't tend to be the best diet for someone with these issues @Tiptopsshape , due to the fibre content. I think GPs/consultants would recommend the FODMAP diet which is easily found online.

They would tend to only have those fruit/veg that are on the list, along with other foods.

Tekkentime · 29/11/2022 14:00

Make from scratch sauerkraut and start giving him that with meals, will get worse before it gets better 😂 but give it a couple of months (or less if you're lucky) and he may be cured!

Megifer · 29/11/2022 14:04

Was also going to ask is he vegan by any chance. I wouldn't mind betting its connected to that some people just don't get on with a vegan diet stomach/wind wise.

Why would you be worried hes secretly eating meat? More importantly why would he need to eat it secretly?

FizzyTango · 29/11/2022 14:07

Yeahhh I'd bet my arse it's the vegan diet tbh. I get such bad wind when I eat veggie/vegan food. Lentils/chickpeas/vegetables cause gas in some people. Sounds like his diet doesn't suit him.

user573010482911233445559002281818484 · 29/11/2022 14:35

Bear grylls did an interview where he said he was farting constantly because of his vegan diet and now eats a steak a day and barely farts now.

FiloPasty · 29/11/2022 14:41

Follow eat burn sleep on Instagram, vegan diet is not great for the gut

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/11/2022 14:44

If you look at what is good for IBS (FODMAP) and what is vegan you will see it's basically opposite foods. I'd be really unwell eating vegan and in pain with IBS. I bet that's it.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 29/11/2022 14:46

Poor man. Bad enough to have that condition but to have a partner making a big production out of it must be horrible for his self-esteem.

Is the vegan diet his choice? And agree with others, why would he "secretly" eat meat rather than openly?

Ladyintangerine · 29/11/2022 14:49

@Suffrajitsu Someone on the ensuite bathrooms thread suggests striking a match to get rid of methane. Could be worth a try?

Hell noooo !

Farts are flammable and can explode when ignited.
Farting releases a combination of oxygen, methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and nitrogen, and some of these gasses are flammable.
That's why the old party trick of lighting a fart on fire, aka pyroflatulence, is so effective (but dangerous).

I knew of students at Uni that tried this and usually ended up burning their jeans - if they got 'blow-back'.

Appreciate all the replies! He's had so many tests, the latest was a stool sample which was normal, will definitely look into charcoal etc.. diet wise we're vegan (my choice admittedly) so he doesn't eat meat, dairy at all. Like i say we have a really healthy diet.
I know it sounds like im exaggerating but the smell is so putrid its enough to clear a room, utterly foul smelling, and happens regularly throughout the day, he works from home luckily (or unlucky for me!) although doubt work could sack someone for farting anyway. I dont go in his home office as it stinks. In summer at least we could open windows in the house!
He is very self conscious and he worries that when we're out socially that people are put off, if he tries to hold it in he gets bad gas pain. We were at my sisters a few weeks ago for dinner and her kid ended up getting blamed for the stink, we were both too embarrassed to say anything, and now hes saying he's not going again.
Im worried he's secretly eating meat somehow but cant find any evidence of covert meat eating so no idea if this is causing it.

You say your diet is healthy, but as someone who can't digest various fruits vegetables, pulses or legumes, a vegan diet would make me grossly unwell. It might be the case for your DH.

Like others have suggested, get your DH to try FODMAPS as he might well have trouble digesting some of the supposedly 'healthy' things he is consuming. It also might be worth reading up about SIBO too. It's not routinely tested for, but worth considering.

I have IBS and if im having a flair up i can empty a room with the smell, and no i cant always hold it in and i am embarrassed by it to the point i try not to leave the house 🫣😳

My triggers are raw veg, onions, garlic and stress. I can manage a small amount of gluten and dairy but its not part of my daily diet. A vegan diet would definitely make it worse.

Im lucky that my DP is understanding because if he was behaving like you are id be permanently stressed which would make it worse.

Febreeze air freshner is very affective at removing the smell.

Surprisingly, garlic and onions are possibly the two biggest IBS triggers for so many people, far more so than any other food. My older sister had terrible room-clearing farts until I suggested she stop eating both. Voila, no more farts.

I also agree that stress is another factor.

Addictedtohotbaths · 29/11/2022 15:22

Has he been tested for SIBO? Small intestine bacterial overgrowth.
it’s done via a breath test.
it’s a gut imbalance and causes a lot of farting amongst other things.
treatment is strict diet / antibiotic

So he just free farts at a dinner party seriously can't do it in the loo?

ScaredSceptic · 29/11/2022 15:33

I can't tolerate a high fibre diet (or even a diet with moderately high insoluble fibre). If I eat anything high in fibre, I get the most awful painful and excessive wind.

This could well be the issue. He may need to try a different diet.

DucklingDaisy · 29/11/2022 15:37

goadyolddough · 29/11/2022 04:04

I couldn't put up with it.

My husband and I don't fart in front of each other as we both hate it. When people say they can't help it. I always ask if they would do it in an interview then?

Get him to the doctors and buy him some Windeze!

I don’t have the same smell issue, but since giving birth a couple of times occasionally I do have one slip out that I have zero control over. Would certainly be embarrassing in an interview

He can't be that self conscious if he lets them out in a room full of people!

Why doesn't he go to the loo or better yet, outside!

I was also going to quote that tv programme! My own digestive system reacts very badly to things like kale which are supposed to be good for you.
