DH farting problem ruining relationship

So basically what it says on the tin. Married 4 years, everythings fine, really cant conplain at all except for the farting issue. And yes he's had all sorts of tests, diet changes, nothing helps 😣 he's massively self conscious of it, smell is putrid to the point of making me feel sick, and so embarrassing when visiting parents or with friends, I cant seem to get the stench out of the house.
Just to be clear he doesnt eat junk food as im not a fan, we eat healthy, weirdly it seems the more nervous he gets about his flatulence the worse it gets. The weekend was the last straw, I had to sleep downstairs as the smell in our room was disgusting.
He's had a colonoscopy, showed nothing, stool samples etc, theyre saying ibs as he's other wise healthy apart from the putrid farting which is ruining everything.

Nutritionist. It sounds
like he has some issues with his gut Bacteria here more gas and smelly.
probiotics can help.
so does eating sauerkraut, kefir, yoghurt….
Plenty of vegetables.
and reduce any offending foods could be legumes, dairy ….. he’ll need to be careful on what’s making him worse.
if stress is making it all worse (quite ogival btw), then exercise etc….

Also I’d stop making such a huge thing out if it. Buy an air freshener such as Oust and spray the room. Going to sleep downstairs isn’t going to make him stressed and self conscious. Therefore will make it all worse anyway.

Get him one of these for Christmas.

You might at least get some benefit from reduced energy costs!

my partner had this
he was lactose intolerant

Beentheretshirtwornout · 29/11/2022 10:32

Many coeliacs are lactose intolerant. The damage caused by gluten means they cannot digest lactose containing food. Once they have healed it can often be reintroduced

Tiptopsshape · 29/11/2022 12:06

Appreciate all the replies! He's had so many tests, the latest was a stool sample which was normal, will definitely look into charcoal etc.. diet wise we're vegan (my choice admittedly) so he doesn't eat meat, dairy at all. Like i say we have a really healthy diet.
I know it sounds like im exaggerating but the smell is so putrid its enough to clear a room, utterly foul smelling, and happens regularly throughout the day, he works from home luckily (or unlucky for me!) although doubt work could sack someone for farting anyway. I dont go in his home office as it stinks. In summer at least we could open windows in the house!
He is very self conscious and he worries that when we're out socially that people are put off, if he tries to hold it in he gets bad gas pain. We were at my sisters a few weeks ago for dinner and her kid ended up getting blamed for the stink, we were both too embarrassed to say anything, and now hes saying he's not going again.
Im worried he's secretly eating meat somehow but cant find any evidence of covert meat eating so no idea if this is causing it.

Do you eat a lot of beans and chickpeas?

I'd try cutting them out of his diet... they both give me horrendous gut pain and make being a vegetarian very challenging at times.

MamaFirst · 29/11/2022 12:22

I wouldn't call a vegan diet really healthy personally. Beans and veg would make most people stink.

tribpot · 29/11/2022 12:25

Did he have this problem before he became vegan? I have to say, under the circs I think he needs to try a wider variety of foods, to see if there is any improvement.

suzyscat · 29/11/2022 12:31

Try the low fodmap elimination diet - it's hard and restrictive but can be life changing

Annabananna1 · 29/11/2022 12:31

Too many lentils, chickpeas etc?

chikp · 29/11/2022 12:32

Does he have that huel stuff?

jamoncrumpets · 29/11/2022 12:33

Does he drink? That was the issue my DH had. No booze now and it's 80% better.

Jmommy · 29/11/2022 12:35

Try low fodmap diet if haven’t already.

Roocakes · 29/11/2022 12:42

This may or may not work for your dh but i was advised to remove all fruit, veg, cereals, wholemeal bread, caffeine, fibrous foods for a week. Within 3 days the bad wind, constipation, pain and bloating disappeared. It was cheese sandwiches and chicken & potatoes all the way 😕. After a week I gradually reintroduced certain foods and I haven’t had too many problems since.

RaRaRaspoutine · 29/11/2022 12:50

Sugar always makes me toot. Does he eat the odd biscuit or put sugar in hot drinks etc? Even a little bit on my porridge gets me going.

TheOtherHotstepper · 29/11/2022 12:57

I feel your pain DH.

No dairy and very little alcohol has been transforming for my DH.

Olios · 29/11/2022 12:58

My first thought was to ask if he is vegetarian. Some people just don't digest veg very well. Does he have family with digestion issues or Crohn's disease? Could he try eating a meaty diet with much less veg and fruit for a couple months as an experiment?

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/11/2022 12:58

Has he tried probiotic tablets?

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/11/2022 12:59

(Poor man, btw. Must be bloody awful)

hotdiggetydog · 29/11/2022 12:59

BadNomad · 29/11/2022 03:57

Can he not go outside when he needs to pass wind? Or is it involuntary? I have IBS, but I can control when I poof, so I don't know if your DH can't help it or if he just doesn't care to go do it elsewhere. You say he eats healthfully. High fibre foods will cause excessive gas. But it's the green veg and animal protein that causes the foul-smelling wind. Try eating less meat.

"when I poof" 😂😂😂😂 hahahaha fucking hell

Someone on the ensuite bathrooms thread suggests striking a match to get rid of methane. Could be worth a try?

Yes, and keep candles burning.

I don't think some posters realise how awful the smell can be when someone is ill. My FIL has serious intestinal and stomach issues and his farts are nuclear. I have honestly never smelled anything so bad. My body wants to vomit but also freezes in a kind of shock. There's no joke that can be made because it's so seriously awful. He has his own loo in the house which I used once in an emergency. It was scrupulously clean but the stench was literally eye watering.

So OP I absolutely feel for you both. You for having to suffer it and him for not being able to stop. If there's nothing visually wrong in scans etc then I'd agree to look at diet changes. Elimination of dairy as a first point would be a good starting point and then the FODMAP. It may also be a reaction to more than one thing. Good luck to both of you.

My poor dad had bowel cancer and has had most of his large intestine removed, he is now faecally incontinent and farts all the time, the smell is vile, he's crippled with embarrassment and it has ruined his social life, it's just awful for him .

Thelnebriati · 29/11/2022 13:06

Its really unlikely that meat is causing this, its much more likely its something in his vegan diet. Some people lack the enzyme you need to digest beans, others are triggered by specific foods.
Would you consider trying an elimination diet that tests every item he normally eats? How will you react if it turns out a vegan diet isn't suitable for him?

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 29/11/2022 13:13

I have IBS and if im having a flair up i can empty a room with the smell, and no i cant always hold it in and i am embarrassed by it to the point i try not to leave the house 🫣😳

My triggers are raw veg, onions, garlic and stress. I can manage a small amount of gluten and dairy but its not part of my daily diet. A vegan diet would definitely make it worse.

Im lucky that my DP is understanding because if he was behaving like you are id be permanently stressed which would make it worse.

Febreeze air freshner is very affective at removing the smell.

BobDear · 29/11/2022 13:19

I would also say that it's possible that the Vegan diet doesn't suit his metabolism..

You have twice implied that you have imposed your feelings about what is eaten on your DH, and whilst he might be going along with it, you should be open to him changing his diet to whatever works for him. I know that animal fat can cause stinky farts, but so can excessive pulses and vegetables. Unless your DH feels strongly that he wants to continue to be vegan, you should encourage him to experiment with whatever diet works best for him.
