DH farting problem ruining relationship

So basically what it says on the tin. Married 4 years, everythings fine, really cant conplain at all except for the farting issue. And yes he's had all sorts of tests, diet changes, nothing helps 😣 he's massively self conscious of it, smell is putrid to the point of making me feel sick, and so embarrassing when visiting parents or with friends, I cant seem to get the stench out of the house.
Just to be clear he doesnt eat junk food as im not a fan, we eat healthy, weirdly it seems the more nervous he gets about his flatulence the worse it gets. The weekend was the last straw, I had to sleep downstairs as the smell in our room was disgusting.
He's had a colonoscopy, showed nothing, stool samples etc, theyre saying ibs as he's other wise healthy apart from the putrid farting which is ruining everything.

Maybe he should go outside to break wind.

Or at least go to another room. But I guess that's hard if he's asleep

ittakes2 · 29/11/2022 06:35

The antibiotics for guardia solved stinky wind problems in our family. Like tinidizole.

Badger1970 · 29/11/2022 06:37

Just out of interest, can he control this at work? Has it ever been mentioned to him?

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 29/11/2022 06:42

Lots of fruit & veg can make the smell worse, my DH goes on high veg diets and the smell could bring down a dinosaur.

I would suggest fodmap & go from there.

DaughterOfPsychiatrist · 29/11/2022 06:43

Could it be a food allergy/intolerance?

if so an elimination diet could help discover the problem foods?

a quick Google suggests that the most likely culprits are milk and wheat:

www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/fodmap-diet-what-you-need-to-know

(obvs seek proper advice, I’m just a rando on the internet who had to do an elimination diet many years ago when breastfeeding my daughter who was so affected that she was ‘failure to thrive’)

Amicompletelyinsane · 29/11/2022 06:50

My children are dairy intolerant and the Stench is so bad if that have any at all

Thighlengthboots · 29/11/2022 06:51

Its really not normal for farts to smell that bad. Its kinda like you know when an elderly person gets a UTI because their urine smells really bad . So something isnt right. He needs to look at his gut health. Bowels are so important because our immune system is there and it also makes most of our seratonin (the feel good neurotransmitter). I agree about food intolerances and trying to cut out dairy/gluten etc to see if that helps. I'd also be taking symprove which is a researched, proven by peer reviewed studies microbiome support liquid that you take once a day. You can get it on amazon.

DillDanding · 29/11/2022 06:56

It sounds simplistic, but why can he not hold them in?

I say that as someone who never farts. A life long holder-inner. Maybe it’s not as easy for some 🤔

it seems the more nervous he gets about his flatulence the worse it gets.

Would love to see if remedial hypnosis would help (it's a medically approved treatment for IBS).

Greyphoto · 29/11/2022 07:17

sounds like Ibs / intolerance to me to something. I have had the same issue and I have to go back to a really plain diet to reset my GI tract. Pre and pro biotics might also be useful as there sounds to be an in balance in his gut.

The FODMAP diet is good to follow, cut out everything for 5 days then for 3 days add in certain foods to test the effect.

Ladybug14 · 29/11/2022 07:18

Strong (20 billion multiple string) probiotic
Charcoal tablets
Cut out dairy and if that doesn't work, cut out gluten
Stop cruciferous veg

Remainiac · 29/11/2022 07:20

Onions and anything else in the allium family eg garlic. Cut those out of his diet entirely, works like magic.

rwalker · 29/11/2022 07:22

The fact he’s doing something about it speaks volumes he’s not doing it on purpose and if he could stop it he would

let hope u never get medical problems then he fucks off rather than supporting you

Forfrigz · 29/11/2022 07:29

Main things that cause this (in this order) are sugar, coeliac disease and crohn's. Sugar usually causes an issue but its not always extreme. Coeliac is extremely common and most people who have it aren't diagnosed and will never know because we don't screen for it which is bad since it involves autoimmunity where your immune system gradually destroys your small bowels, nervous system and joints. Crohn's is less common but also gairly common, doctors don't usually bother to test for it and just shout 'IBS' at you even though that isn't a properly described illness it's what they say when they can't be bothered. Crohn's is even more dangerous to the digestive system than coeliac and often results in resectioms of the large bowel which reduces your lifespan. What I mean to say is good luck, because there are certainly very few doctors who can be arsed to help you with any of these or other serious problems.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 29/11/2022 07:39

’Flatulence filtering underwear’ might help in the meantime whilst you try and find the underlying cause. Never tried the, mind you so I don’t know if they work.

Beentheretshirtwornout · 29/11/2022 07:50

My dd like this when younger, could tell which rooms she'd been in and it lingered!..long story short...coeliac disease. Not all gp's up to speed on this though. All the best.

Beentheretshirtwornout · 29/11/2022 07:53

Also, NICE Guidelines say patients should been tested for Coeliac if a diagnosis of IBS given...

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 29/11/2022 08:01

Also even if the test for coeliac is negative it doesn't mean that going gluten free won't help. Get the test first though as it only works if you are eating gluten.

These are my issue too - typical with IBS. I would really recommend plain organic kefir yoghurt, much better than the Yakult type ones that are full of sugar/sweetners. But he should definitely try the fodmap diet (alliums are a big no with that).

Suffrajitsu · 29/11/2022 08:43

Someone on the ensuite bathrooms thread suggests striking a match to get rid of methane. Could be worth a try?

bluelavender · 29/11/2022 08:55

There is specialist underwear for people with fluctuance difficulties that absorbs odours

ormaybenot · 29/11/2022 09:05

Buscopan is the best I've found for IBS. Also cutting out brown bread and broccoli.

SadButTheTruth · 29/11/2022 09:06

I have so much sympathy for you! I had exactly the same problem and during the day DH was great at going outside of making an effort to reduce the impact. However nighttime was a different story and I would be woken up by how bad the smell was and be unable to get back to sleep to the point of having to leave the room completely. I cannot recommend the Shreddies pants linked above highly enough. It felt like they saved my sanity and my marriage. They really work and if there are health issues that need investigating at the same time, they might be the lifesaver you need. I have a really sensitive nose (the running joke in the family is that I can smell a fart before it happens!) but the problem is that my gag reflex is triggered too, and I have ended up vomiting from my DH’s wind!!

superorganisms · 29/11/2022 09:08

A probiotic like Symprove (although very expensive) can have a very positive effect. Has he been on antibiotics a lot in his life? Get a food intolerance test done, too, and cut those out of his diet.
