What would you class "short" as when meeting a potential partner?

I have heard this phrase a lot and for some people short is someone the same height as them, for others it is someone shorter than them. I even heard for some people someone who is three inches taller than them is short.

What would you class as short and what would be a deal breaker for you?

For a man I’d say 5’6” and under is short.. but for me its never a deal breaker as long as i like the guy.. but then, I’m only 5’2” so not many are shorter than myself!

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/07/2022 09:15

I'm 6ft. So any guy smaller than me is short.

I have only ever dated 1 person smaller than me.

Svara · 08/07/2022 09:16

I'd say under 5ft 8 is short. I'm 5ft 5 and prefer 5ft 6 and taller.

Heroicallyl0st · 08/07/2022 09:17

Surely it depends how tall you are and your preferences? There’s no fixed definition.

Indoctro · 08/07/2022 09:17

5ft 8 and under for men and 5ft 6 and under for women is short

seaUrchinOne · 08/07/2022 09:18

Shorter than me 5'8 I would prefer a man over 6ft but if he was everything I was looking for then slightly shorter but definitely not shorter than me, that would make feel uncomfortable.

Nugg · 08/07/2022 09:19

I simply prefer men 5'10" and above. I am 5'3" but have always been attracted to much taller men 6'3" and above, but those appear to be quite rare 😂
As for "short" I would consider a man under 5'8" to be short.

Y7drama · 08/07/2022 09:19

I’d also say under 5’8 is short.

Imthedamnfoolwhoshothim · 08/07/2022 09:19

Shorter than me. I am 5"8 and couldn't date anyone shorter than me.

Y7drama · 08/07/2022 09:20

That’s interesting. I wouldn’t say 5’5/5’6 was short for a woman. I’d say average.

FlatBottomedGirl · 08/07/2022 09:20

I'd say 5'9" or under for a man is short.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/07/2022 09:22

I'm 5ft7, DH is 5ft8. I that perfect.

I'd say shorter than me, so under 5ft7.

Grumpsy · 08/07/2022 09:22

I’m 5”6 my shortest partner has been 5”11 - my husband is 6”3 - I like tall men 🤷🏻‍♀️

3peassuit · 08/07/2022 09:23

I’m 5’ 2” so anyone under 5’ 4” is short. I found tall men unattractive in my single days.

SleepDreamThinkHuge · 08/07/2022 09:27

Indoctro · 08/07/2022 09:17

5ft 8 and under for men and 5ft 6 and under for women is short

Really? 5 foot 6 is tall for women. I thought average height women is like 5 foot 4 in the UK

OP posts:
5128gap · 08/07/2022 09:28

My own height would be irrelevant. I'm 5' 4" so very few men ( and I date men) would be shorter or the same height as me. That wouldn't mean that they're not short though, which to me is an objective description, and means below average height for a man. I'm not attracted to men below average height.

takingmytimeonmyride · 08/07/2022 09:29

I'm 5ft 1, so everyone seems tall to me. I would class under 5ft 6 to be short for a man. I've fancied men not much taller than me, so it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

My ex is 5ft 8, my boyfriend is 6ft 1.

womaninatightspot · 08/07/2022 09:29

So subjective. I'm nearly 5 11" so anything under 6 ft is short for me. My type would be 6 3"+ ex rugby/ rower with big shoulders. Lots of them around during uni/ post uni days.

Seem very thin on the ground now I'm in my 40's

I meant 5 foot 6 is taller than average so it is not short.

I’m 5”2, so anyone my height or less

whydoesithurtsomuch · 08/07/2022 09:34

Until I met my husband I would have said I would never date a short man. All my boyfriends prior to him had been 5'9" or taller. (I'm 5'3"). My husband is 5'5" and I can honestly say it was never something I thought about. He's never been someone who has been concerned about his height, and it's just never been an issue. Our children are taller than both of us!

SillyDoriswithaDangler · 08/07/2022 09:34

I'm 5"8 so and my husband is 6" so anything under 6" feels short.

WindyGlowers · 08/07/2022 09:36

My height or less, so 5ft7. My dh is 6ft1 and that feels about right, although he is who I'm used to so it could be that.

Same here.

5128gap · 08/07/2022 09:40

I'm curious as to why you ask OP? This comes up a lot and I think, surely people know whether they find someone's height a turn off regardless of what other people think. Or are the threads started by short men who want to assess their desirability? Or as a way in to call women shallow (which is invariably where they end up)?
Not saying people can't post what they like, but the motivation interests me.
