What would you class "short" as when meeting a potential partner?

I have heard this phrase a lot and for some people short is someone the same height as them, for others it is someone shorter than them. I even heard for some people someone who is three inches taller than them is short.

What would you class as short and what would be a deal breaker for you?

According to google the average U.K. female height is 5ft 3

So 5ft 6 is definitely not short for a woman

virgospirit · 08/07/2022 09:41

Im 5’4” and my girlfriend is 5’1” so I guess we’re both short. Im simply not attracted to tall women one iota, I did got out with a woman at 5’6” for several months years ago, that’s the limit for me.

for reference the av.height for men & women in the UK is 5’9” & 5’3.5”

My bf is short. I'm 5ft5 and the bf is also 5ft5. He tends to stoop though. It's personality and character that are important, not height.

DecimatedDreams · 08/07/2022 09:49

There is 'short' and 'too short for me'. I'd say short for a man is 5'6 or under. Too short for me would be under 5'8.

5ft 8 and under for men and 5ft 6 and under for women is short

Don't know which country you are in, but the average height of UK women is 161.3 cm (5 ft 3 1⁄2 in).

In the Netherlands, the average height of women is 168.5 cm (5 ft 6 1⁄2 in).

Suzi888 · 08/07/2022 09:54

My height or less, but if I liked the guy then not a deal breaker.
I’m 5ft 6.
I’d prefer 5’ 11 and over in all honesty.

Inthesameboatatmo · 08/07/2022 09:57

I'm 5'7 so I think any guy under 5'10 is short .

TheVolturi · 08/07/2022 10:00

To be its more manly and attractive to be taller. But there are exceptions! Quite partial to Dr Melendez (From The Good Dr) and he's not tall.

JaninaDuszejko · 08/07/2022 10:02

The average height for a British woman is 5'3" and the average height for a British man is 5'9". Most of us will cluster around that and looking at the growth charts for boys at 18 the 9th percentile is 5'6" and for girls it's 5'1" so those seems like reasonable heights to call short in this country (i.e. the shortest ~10 %). I think though that most people of average or below height in this country are called 'short' regularly as we've already seen on this thread.

i think being short is sometimes considered unmanly, and that’s why we short bloke (5’6” here) can get dismissed purely on height

thats fine, it’s a preference.

what can get annoying is when it’s done in an insulting way. I’ve been called “not a real man”, a “shortarse” etc, by both men and women.

preference fine, something to laugh at, not fine

HappyHappyHermit · 08/07/2022 10:05

5ft5 for men and 5ft3 for women

I can't think why anyone would laugh at a short man?

AndStand · 08/07/2022 10:08

I'm 5ft 10. My husband is 5ft 8.

Strangely I've never dated any man taller than myself not for want of looking

I'd consider short for men is 5ft 7 and under.

JaninaDuszejko · 08/07/2022 10:09

Another thing I've noticed after going back to work after lockdown is how scarily big most men seem after spending 2 years in lockdown with just my family (DH is 5'5", I'm 5'2").

So subjective. I'm nearly 5 11" so anything under 6 ft is short for me. My type would be 6 3"+ ex rugby/ rower with big shoulders. Lots of them around during uni/ post uni days.

Seem very thin on the ground now I'm in my 40's

Same! To everything Grin
The guy I'm dating is 6ft and broad which suits me

AuntieMarys · 08/07/2022 10:12

5 feet 11.
I am 6 feet tall.
Dh is 5 feet 8 🤣

elliejjtiny · 08/07/2022 10:14

DH is 5ft 10in I think. I would class a man as short if they were less than about 5ft 4in but I wouldn't find a man unattractive purely because they were shorter than that. TBH as a mother of a son who is predicted to be around 5ft 4in as an adult I find this thread a bit depressing.

Imthedamnfoolwhoshothim · 08/07/2022 09:19

Shorter than me. I am 5"8 and couldn't date anyone shorter than me.

Why not? What would happen?

ChristinePerfect · 08/07/2022 10:21

I’m 5ft 4” and for a man I would say anything below 5 ft 6” is short. I’m attracted to 6 footers, but have dated a couple of blokes who were only fractionally taller than me, one was very athletic so you didn’t really notice his height so much as his physique.
I used to think Prince was sex on a stick and he was very petite, so ultimately height doesn’t put me off.

JaninaDuszejko · 08/07/2022 10:52

It is isn't it. I keep telling my kids there's no virtue or achievement in being big but if you are short people seem to feel happy to pass comment on it all the time and with children people like to boast about how much their large child eats, as if I'm starving my children and that's why they are petite.

CreatingHavoc · 08/07/2022 10:57

I'm 5'5 and so is my ex. He is short but his height didn't bother me if he was shorter than me it might have done. Went on a date once with a guy who said he was 5'5 in his OLD profile but he was actually about 5'3. Why lie?!?

Move up North,I'm always struck by how many taller men there are up there when we go!

5' 3" is the average height for a woman in the UK. I really don't think 5' 6" is short.

I think both of my grandsons are going to be quite short. One more than the other. They have above average height parents, but average height grandmothers and below average height grandfathers. I suppose the short gene won that particular battle. Hope they don't get too overlooked.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 08/07/2022 11:16

My DP and I are both 5'3", with me being ever so slightly taller. I like the fact we're the same height!
