What would you class "short" as when meeting a potential partner?

I have heard this phrase a lot and for some people short is someone the same height as them, for others it is someone shorter than them. I even heard for some people someone who is three inches taller than them is short.

What would you class as short and what would be a deal breaker for you?

It's almost easier to say what I'd consider to be an unremarkable height.

For women, any height between 5ft2 and 5ft9 is pretty unremarkable. And 'tall' and 'short' is a sliding scale either end.

For men any height between 5ft7 and 6ft2 is pretty unremarkable... and ditto.

Throwawaytoday · 08/07/2022 14:30

ps I don't actually remark upon people's heights, I come from a tall family and am married into a shorter family, I know better than to comment on the way someone looks.

DrDetriment · 08/07/2022 14:30

I'm 5 ft 1 and only find men of over around 5ft 10/11 attractive. My serious partners have all been at least 6 ft 3. I'd consider short to be under 5 ft 8 for a man and under 5 ft 3 for a woman.

Marineboy67 · 08/07/2022 15:40

My Girlfriends 5ft 9 and I'm 5ft 10 just. I'm definitely the shortest bloke she's been out with. That said I'd much rather be a nice guy at 5ft 10 than a twat at 6ft + like the some of the others!

GreyCarpet · 08/07/2022 15:49

Same height or taller than me (i'm 5'3 give or take half an inch) to about 5'9. My boyfriend is 5'11 which is way taller than I'd usually date but I like him so 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'd rather date a man of 5'3 than 6'3.

SmallThingsEverywhere · 08/07/2022 15:54

Anyone man under 6ft is short too short for me. I am 5’9 but prefer tall men. DH is a perfect 6’3.

Sunnytwobridges · 08/07/2022 16:47

I'd say under 5'8 for a man regardless if I'm dating them or not. I'm 5'6 and if see a man my height I feel like that's short.

For a woman under 5'2 is short to me. I don't feel that much taller than someone that is 5'3 or 5'4 although most of the women on my team at work are around that height and I feel like a giant next to them even though it's only a few inches difference.

5ft 8 and under for men and 5ft 6 and under for women is short

5ft 6 for a women is short???

CambsAlways · 08/07/2022 16:51

I think a man under 5ft 9 is short, I’m tall 5ft 8 my DH is 6ft 1

womaninatightspot · 08/07/2022 09:29

So subjective. I'm nearly 5 11" so anything under 6 ft is short for me. My type would be 6 3"+ ex rugby/ rower with big shoulders. Lots of them around during uni/ post uni days.

Seem very thin on the ground now I'm in my 40's

I'm also tall and like the tall, broad shouldered type.

I ended up marrying a 5'11 skinny cyclist Grin

FlatBottomedGirl · 08/07/2022 09:20

I'd say 5'9" or under for a man is short.

Doesn't really work statistically unless a majority of men are short.

SnowyLamb · 08/07/2022 17:09

I know it's ridiculous but it just all feels wrong if they're shorter than me, so they need to be 5'7". I don't mind being obliged to wear flats 😆

Glitterspy · 08/07/2022 17:09

5’10” and under is a short man.

Under 6ft would be too short for me, I don’t find men under 6ft attractive everyone has their preferences don’t see why people get annoyed about those that like tall men.

We all have preferences. About 86% of men are under 6 foot though and the ones that are over 6 foot you're competing against a lot of women for (if they're otherwise dateable).

Oblomov22 · 08/07/2022 17:12

It's not his tall you are. It's how tall the national average is.

HoppingPavlova · 08/07/2022 17:16

I’m just over 5’ and would consider anything under 6’ short. If I was young and dating I may go 5’10 if the guy was exceptional in every other way, but I don’t know.

Ombres · 08/07/2022 17:16

Indoctro · 08/07/2022 09:17

5ft 8 and under for men and 5ft 6 and under for women is short

I agree below 5ft 8 for men I'd consider short.

Though I'm 5ft 5 and consider myself average height (I think average for women is 5ft 4?) but I keep finding myself described as tall and finding myself amongst the taller people in groups of women - and no I'm not in heels or Lilliput 😅

Ombres · 08/07/2022 17:17

I prefer, and have preferred, over 5ft 10 for partners and husband.

TyneTortoise · 08/07/2022 17:20

Shorter than me (I'm 5 feet, barely). Never had to consider it as most men are taller!
I actually prefer shorter men but ended up with 6'2 Dfiancee who is v hard to kiss unless he bends down. Oh well....

TyneTortoise · 08/07/2022 17:23

*Fiance

SimonaRazowska · 08/07/2022 17:25

I think about 5ft7 and under is “short” for me, but honestly, at just over 6ft tall most men in the U.K. are shorter than me

as an older woman, I can say that the older you are, the less these things matter.

Though even in my 20s I once dated this French guy who was much shorter than me 😁 He came up to my shoulder.

I think couples that don’t adhere to societal mainstream norms can look very cool 😎💪

User0610134049 · 08/07/2022 17:29

Finding it very hard to believe average height for a woman is 5’3 as suggested upthread.
that’s what the petite range is aimed at (and under), I am that height and definitely feel short compared to friends

FuckingHateRats · 08/07/2022 17:32

DH is 6ft5 (I'm 5ft9, for reference). I've been with him since I was 17 so he's kind of ruined short men for me. I've got male pals that are 6ft and, sizing them up, I think it feels feasible but I'd not like to be with a man shorter than that? Obviously personality is more important and I'm sure if get past it for the right man, but if we're going shallow preferences, that's how the land lies.

Luckily I very much like my tall husband and plan on keeping him 😂

Arenanewbie · 08/07/2022 17:34

5ft6 and lower.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/07/2022 17:37

Under 6ft
