Men in their 40s

I am in my late 30s. I don't know why but men in their late 40s ask me out. This is in real life and not from dating sites. Why would they not date a woman their age? Some of these men have children so it's not like they want to start a family.

I think some of them listen to or read really bad advice on how to supposedly attract women on online dating.

Who the hell are Peter Cook and Carl Sagan? Why do older men always expect other people to be in thrall to their obscure teenage heroes from the 80s? Its like they haven't been able to adapt to modern times. But nevertheless, they expect some younger woman to be enthusiastic about this. Then undoubtedly then they say the line "How can you never have heard of Peter Cook/insert teenage hero?" in a mock paternal tone as if not being 48 like them is some sort of black mark . And they think this is attractive?

As I said, the definition of stupidity...

I've just seen this gem on OLD:

"I've been on my own for a while so you'll have to be pretty special to catch my interest"

Written by a moderately unattractive 50 year old man, who's longest relationship was 2 years, and also wants that special person to have an amazing kooky sense of humour, plus 'need to love' Peter Cook and Carl Sagan. All wrapped up in the body of a 30-40 year old.

And this is the kind of offering that causes women on this thread to vent here.

Unbelievably deluded.

The perfect comeback to the Peter Cook one is... yeah, my dad liked them too. Then ask them about an obscure up to date reference about something you enjoy.

There are a few older men in my hiking group who hit on younger women. It's quite entertaining to watch the eye rolls at the Benny Hill humour 🤣.

There are also some lovely older men in my hiking group but they don't hit on younger women.

OhLordyWhatNow · 08/05/2022 00:16

My dad did like Peter Cook too so not a lie, but my dad was 68 when he died over a decade ago.

Yes that’s the general attitude . I think a big part of what happened is the explosion of high speed constant extreme porn , giving men the impression women live to sexually serve men and that crusty old codgers are entitled to ‘hot bodied twenty somethings who can be switched out at a whim ‘

they are honestly deluded and quite sad

Should have bought him a pint of Best and told him you bought that because "I am".

Palmfrond · 08/05/2022 12:42

I obviously can’t compete with these stories of trying to be picked up by feeble minded chancers, but in the unlikely event that it makes anybody feel better, I am frequently mansplained to, and less frequently, treated as if everything I do (and perhaps everything I am) is commodifiable and open to faux-cheeky negotiation.
I think it’s a standard male reaction to feelings of intimidation? Which doesn’t make it any less twatty imo.
I'm a dude btw.

I hate to be one of those posters who reports back what DH said, but in the interests of research, I did put Percy's mansplaining comment about replacing the ERG valve instead of cleaning it to DH. He said:

"What does it have to with him? <delete potentially offensive sarcastic comment> he's probably the type who takes his car to the garage every time it needs a service and pays a fortune for it". Anyway, since Percy cannot work this out for himself, he is removing it because he finds it interesting, he may clean it and refit it to see if it works and if not then "obviously" he will get a new one (which he will fit himself). ERG valves for this make of car cost £300 and he "doesn't fancy a cheap Chinese rip off from ebay passed off as being manufactured here".

He isn't a mechanic, but an engineer.

Imagine needing all that explained to you! I know it and I'm not in the slightest bit interested in car mechanics.

OhLordyWhatNow · 08/05/2022 13:28

Oh AchatAVendre, you've forgotten! Percy is a man in 'middle age', of course we should be hanging on his every word 🙄

OhLordyWhatNow · 08/05/2022 13:29

Or we could just ignore the wittering

I think the man on man mansplaining is a bit different. It tends to be situation specific, and yes, probably rooted in a level of intimidation when the man percieves the other to have 'alpha' traits he lacks. Its the older man talking down to younger better looking men, the out of shape office guy sneering at the fit manual workers and calling them stupid. I think when men do it to women its less about feeling intimidated and more a genuine belief that their opinion and knowledge are superior to hers.

Palmfrond · 08/05/2022 14:23

@AchatAVendre no offence, but nothing shrieks withered penis like car talk, but that’s possibly because I haven’t the first clue as to what makes cars go and care even less
