This is an odd one.
I’ve been with DP ( we are in our early 60s ) for about ten years and we are mostly happy. We do have ups and downs and from time to time I think I’d be better on my own but that feeling never lasts long.

He is clean almost to a fault. Showers at least once a day and the washing machine is never off - he’s obsessed with washing his clothes and changes them after work and washes everything after half a day’s wear.

Recently he has developed a body odour that I can’t quite describe but it is giving me the ick.

It’s a sort of sour smell . Like washing that has been left in a washing machine for a week, or something like that. Like towels that have been used again and again without washing.

We have always been affectionate but not very sexual for the past few years which suits us both.

He scrubs himself from top to toe in the shower and goes through a ton of shower gel.

What’s going on ?

I'm having this problem with DH recently as well - musty old man smell, specifically. He's been diabetic for years but has never smelled this way, and it doesn't smell of ketones. It's no better after he washes. Can he really go to the GP about it, without the GP thinking we're both nuts?

I started a different blood pressure medication 2 weeks ago and have already noticed my sweat smells different despie daily showering. It's not listed as a side effect, but wonder if your DH may be taking something similar?

Have a smell of his shower gels. I couldn't understand why our bathroom was stinking of sweat and it was my sons grapefruit shower gel - yuk!

Has he had his prostate checked. Also diabetes. Plus bladder. Get him a full mot, drag him there if need be😂 some will avoid the doc like the plague.

It could be nonenal odour.

EarthSight · 03/08/2024 22:32

It could be stress and hormone related.

When men get stressed, their bodies can excrete a particular type of androgen, which can smell like slate urine. Maybe that process can happen without the stress due to age?

You: Dr, my husband smells like an old man.
Dr: That's because he is one.

I thought this had happened to DH recently, and was a bit worried there was something wrong with him. But it turned out to be a new pair of jeans that he'd bought. A really weird, strong smell that wasn't obviously chemical and seemed much more bodily/breath. Even though they've been washed quite a few times now there's still a bit of a smell when he wears them. Just in case it's worth checking it's not something as simple as that.

Black jeans? I had a pair that had a really weird smell. Had to soak them in the bath in a solution of bicarb, white vinegar and water for 24 hours to get rid of it. Apparently it’s caused by something in the dye process for black denim.
