Or women of course but I'm a heterosexual female so wouldn't know!

I'll start:

 • 6ft4 because apparently that matters.
 • doesn't take life too seriously so if you can't handle sarcasm swipe left
 • photos of themselves holding fish
 • not sure what to write here

Finding dating pretty uninspiring at the moment as you can probably tell so thought I'd at least get a laugh out of it!

Its usually the one who looks like gollum

😂😂

sillymoo64 · 06/04/2022 10:24

Photos not taken with fish are often taken in bathrooms often with unflushed toilets and damp towels
or taken posed on beds supposedly rumpled from lots of activity aka can't be arsed to change the bedding for weeks
no baggage charming way to refer to ex-wives/girlfriends or children
must be financially independent in other words I am so tight i expect you to pay for everything
discreet in other words married
sympathetic ie nosy

I’ve never been on OLD, but I’ve flicked through tinder on (male) friends’ phones, and it’s really grim.
Mostly what strikes me is the filters that women put on their faces, okay maybe one or two for fun, but not on ALL of them! How are you supposed to know what they actually look like?
And then the written content- either almost nothing, maybe something a bit sassy/porny, or otherwise a bit adversarial/passive aggressive, bitter, or just a bit beat-down and sad.
I’m sure these people aren’t like that in real life, it must be their idea of what’s desirable or maybe they haven’t considered how they come across. Or maybe there’s some protocol going on here that I don’t understand? Anyway, very weird.

Tippletopple · 06/04/2022 11:05

@QuantumWeatherButterfly

I haven't done any online dating in over 10 years, but this is all so familiar!

I cringed every time I saw 'I don't take myself too seriously' - which was pretty much every other profile. Inevitably, these people took themselves very seriously indeed.

I was then, and still remain today, mystified by why so many men online lie about their height. I am tall myself, I'm over 6ft if I wear heels. The number of men who claimed to be 6ft but so very clearly weren't when we met was ridiculous. It's not like you can hide it, it's immediately obvious you're lying! The only thing I could think of was that it was an ego thing - they were so mentally used to rounding up from 5'10" to 6' that they genuinely believed it.

I met DH online dating, so it was clearly worth persevering!

I’ve heard it said it’s a way of at least having a chance with some guys. They know a lot of women filter for over 6ft, so know they won’t even be seen if they don’t lie and at least have a chance of charming you with their personality if you meet, so you might overlook it. Not saying it’s right and I wouldn’t do it, but it comes from a place of “what have I got to lose?”

Threads like this make me want to sign up just for the laughs. I did OLD a few years ago and it was dire. The guy holding a live chicken in a basket in a pub was my favourite. Or maybe the naked guy who loved making love. Or the guy with the women's shoe fetish. I'm staying single.
@Hrpuffnstuff1
That woman who messaged you about being a ten. Honestly now...had you messaged her first and was she, objectively, out of your league?
Out of your/my league!
What does that mean contextually?
She looked like Mini Anden.
Well obviously not, because she swiped and messaged me. In fact, I matched with this person twice. The second time, she wasn't playing the ten-card.
Sometimes you just don't click despite liking the physical aspects of a person.
Most people don't look like their pics when you meet them.
Anyway, a friend was on Tinder at the same time as me and we used to laugh at the male profiles, everyone is either fisherman, kickboxer-MMA, or last saloon-broken-hearted twit.
One of the main issues she had was conversation, there was non.

Hi, gorgeous how's your day. Grin

Worryingly accurate in a fair percentage of profiles.

Not my experience, I'm getting a lot of chat.

GroovyGroovy · 06/04/2022 13:37

arethereanyleftatall. Background toilets and messy bedrooms for sure. Agree many profiles are so bad it made me depressed for the whole human race Sad. Though of course OLD not representative I guess Hmm. Maybe the womens are just as bad as Palmfrond suggests, I don't know.

A man smiling standing with a caught fish by a river would honestly be a charming breath of fresh air by comparison. And the height thing - the sexiest man I ever went out with was a short Hungarian so it doesn't bother me Smile.

I think it depends on the person, both my friend and my DP are very impatient when on talking-messaging. They just wanted to be asked out. When we first met DP showed me her inbox, it was creasingly funny. Some men fixate too much on looks and appearance, beautiful, gorgeous, etc, it's like hyper-sucking up. Personally, I just asked all the matches out in under 10-15 messages.

We both have a mutual friend who's on Tinder at the moment, he's sat on a motorbike that's too big for him, frowning, his bio is just miserable, bordering on aggressive.

I did have a pic of me in my hot tub at home, with the expansive field in the background. Everyone used to comment what a lovely view, where is it. My house.Grin Stuff like that was an intro to asking them out, invite them round.
I had quite a few asking about my height! Then disappointed when I told them...
If you set your profile on Tinder to international, you literally drown in matches from the East-Thai and East Europe-Russia, etc.

^ Is he like that in real life, thats the question I suppose? Presumably not?

Great thread!

Do the men not use filters at all?

Do many women use them? I'd guess it would be a confidence issue with the people using all filtered pictures. Some friends and acquaintances are the same on Facebook and Instagram. Personally I wouldn't dare use an unfiltered photo, the risk of disappointment or confusion if I ever met anyone on a date.

Though my niece showed me her Tinder profile photo and she's young and not lacking in confidence, but it's clearly filtered. Nothing animal filter or anything extreme, you can tell it's her, but slightly filtered nonetheless.

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 06/04/2022 14:31

He's an ex-marine, but he always seems a bit moody. I'm like chill-out and smile FFS. He's one of those moody boys, late 30's.
I suppose all men have a different style, I think being approachable and smiling goes a long way to making a good first impression.

Lots of women had those bunny ears for a bit and those big eyes.Wtf..

Sttoooooopppppp. Just no...

Shunter350 · 06/04/2022 14:41

Yup.. ladies.. why the filtered bunny ears, glitter and stars?

I spent maybe 30 minutes flicking through a friend’s (in his mid twenties) tinder last weekend and it seemed like at least 75% of the women on there had their photos filtered, maybe 15% had their photos filtered to the degree that you wouldn’t recognise them on the street, might not even recognise them as human (alien eyes, sex doll lips, animal ears & noses, covered in sparkles). I’m pulling these numbers out of my arse of course, but that was my impression. Another friend (late 30s) who’s tinder I’ve gone through (and made lots of suitable matches for, ho ho!) the filters were still intense but less, and the passive aggressive/fucked over by life vibe was much increased.
andpony · 06/04/2022 15:42

It might be a try at anonymity?

My niece doesn't need' to filter her photos as she looks just fine without, and doesn't care about being anonymous (she'd been showing me a mutual friend's profile she'd matched with). Apparently a few people her age use it to meet friends, if that has anything to do with it. They might not be taking it so seriously. Interesting anyway. Though I can understand it might be tempting to tweak a photo.

Cattenberg · 08/04/2022 23:33

Another cliche for women is those pouty duckface photos. I’m not a fan.

I find it really off-putting when a man my own age (40) wants to meet a woman aged 18-40. I know you’re sometimes advised to cast a wide net when internet dating, but I can’t imagine having much in common with a man who’s happy to date teenagers.

Men can't be choosy on dating sites, or they will receive 0 matches.

Well if they want a 20 year age range then they could go 30-50 couldn't they?

Another bug near of mine is when a 50 yr old puts 'wants kids'. It's just so entitled. 'I'm 50 but I expect a woman on childbearing age (so, what, 30) as a partner.' Left.

Funny how mens ‘’nets’ so often skew from a whole lot you just up to their age or even less huh It’s always the 40 yr old creep with wants woman 18-40 Never see 40 yr old men with nets from say 40-58
EBearhug · 09/04/2022 23:02

No, because even if they want an older woman, they lie about their age on their profile, because they know women in their late 40s aren't usually looking for men in their 20s and 30s. Although a 42 year-old did ask if I was interested in men wanting older women. I'm 49. I am technically older, but it's not like a different generation.

PurpleThursdays · 09/04/2022 23:21

I found my ex's daring profile on match today (awkward). He sounds even more boring on there than he is in real life.

To too it all he's put a pic on his profile with me in it. I've just text him asking him to remove it (double awkward) and he has replied back "is it the one on Facebook dating?". Well no, its the one on Match, where else have you being putting pictures of me and which ones?? Ffs.

Why do guys do this?
