Tape on the bedroom door

jesspaws · 20/11/2021 22:13

WTF? I've just found sellotape at the bottom of the bedroom door, I saw it out of the corner of my eye as I'm sat on the bed.

It was stuck on the door itself but long enough to reach the door frame if it was taped from the outside. Wtf?

DH and I together 18yrs no red flags, not really. He has recently started sleeping in the spare room since he caught Covid and decided to stay there. He's been enjoying late nights watching box sets while I sleep.

Why would anyone put tape over the bottom of the bedroom door?

If you're sitting on the bed, it must be on the inside of the door. Inside the room.

It would be on the outside if folks were trying to check up on you.
It just got walked in there and got stuck. Do you have kids who might have been using sellotape in the past 24 months ? Or even you. Have you used sellotape in the past several momths? To wrap stuff up?
What
Failing that, I'd just say "Here! Michael! Have you any idea why this sellotape is stuck to my door!?

TheGirlCat · 21/11/2021 02:20

His (spare room) bedroom door, or yours? And what do you mean? A line of tape? The actual entire roll stuck/lodged to it? Stuck vertical or diagonal? I don't understand.

CheeseMmmm · 21/11/2021 02:20

@LostThePot

I’m sure I had this in my spy book that I had when I was a kid. It was to see if someone had opened the door when you were out.
I had the same spy book.

But they'd be in and out all the time so wouldn't mean anything surely.

BrilliantBetty · 21/11/2021 02:29

Seeing if you came out the room during the night?

madisonbridges · 21/11/2021 02:36

If the tape wouldn't meet the doorframe, then it can't be for checking the door opening and closing. If you're thinking it could stretch down from the door to stick to the carpet, then I'd have to say carpet is poor material to engage with sellotape and would give an unreliable result.

BlueTouchPaper · 21/11/2021 02:50

Well it's not going to stop you going in or out. And it's not going to warn anyone if you do so. I think it got there by accident.

starrynight21 · 21/11/2021 03:16

Sounds like something James Bond would do to see if someone had been in his room. All you can do is ask DH.

MimiDaisy11 · 21/11/2021 03:39

Any photos? Maybe it does look like it was deliberate. Perhaps something to do with diy or is it an old door and it was to stop splinters

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/11/2021 04:39

This thread is hilarious.

Clearly he’s obsessed the flood is coming and he’s trying to save you. Silly you for breaking the seal.

As a teen - I used to hide tape on my bedroom door, cupboard and drawers, as it was a fantastic way to see if my sister had stolen from me. She would steal my clothes and any money I had. I would even fold my clothes in my drawers a certain way, so I could tell immediately if she'd been searching.

The tape helped me confidently accuse my sister of being in my room, opening my 3rd drawer, and stealing "x item of clothing". She was always shocked with how I knew but would deny deny deny!

If only digital cameras were around at that time, as I would have taken photos of how things looked before she disturbed the items, or better yet - I would love to have installed cameras!

I wouldn't have placed the tape in an obvious place - eg bottom of the door, as this is easily discovered as people tend to be looking down.
If you have kids - then I would think it was them that has placed it.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/11/2021 05:12

We need to know if you have young children. If you do then there is your answer. Children do weird shit.

Hydrate · 21/11/2021 05:27

Unlikely to be the only reasons I can think of, other than greeting whether the door is opened....
To keep COVID virus out
To keep smoke out if you are trapped inside and the house is on fire.
But probably stuck my mistake from someone who was using tape.

Yusanaim · 21/11/2021 06:00

Used to protect carpet when decorating, to protect door when glueing floor for carpet, to cover the metal join between rooms as sharp screw sticking up, other carpet related issues.

Is OP coming back or have her fingers been taped together?

Damnloginpopup · 21/11/2021 06:34

I do this.

I'm not saying why. It's forbidden.

WTF475878237NC · 21/11/2021 06:45

Assuming there has been one red flag in the past then I would disturb it then see if it gets replaced as PP said. That's the only way of knowing if he put it there to monitor you.

My flatmate used to do this all the time, not just on doors but also her laundry powder and cereal to catch out another flatmate who was breaking our agreements. (One of which was no partners coming to stay more than 50% of the time).

Your husband is having an affair. He has put the tape there to check if you ever come out of the bedroom at night, so he knows if he can safely sneak the other woman into the house.

But seriously, of all the things to get worked up and post on Mumsnet about instead of just talking to your husband?

Oftenithinkaboutit · 21/11/2021 06:52

Well, knock me down with a feather

Name changed or new to mumsnet as no history

AutumnAnn · 21/11/2021 07:03

I've done this before to stop a draft or cooking smells from seeping into a room when there's a big gap underneath the door, it works pretty well if you can't fit an actual draft excluder

Tiredalwaystired · 21/11/2021 07:10

So, assuming you ask this morning…why was it there?

Cos we ALL want to know…

HeronLanyon · 21/11/2021 07:15

Bloody hell what a thread fir a Sunday morning.
Tbh I don’t even understand the spy tape thing or how it would show entry. I can imagine tape somewhere along a hinge would show a crease if the door had been opened but at the bottom surely it will be dragged off (then obvious) or just stay there showing no signs of entry or not. I may even experiment. Will remove or dp may start to wonder at some future date.

GoodnightGrandma · 21/11/2021 07:18

I assumed he’d taped something to the door to spy on her, maybe getting changed.

Sauvignonandlemonade · 21/11/2021 07:20

False imprisonment. Call 101 and have it logged immediately.

Sakurami · 21/11/2021 07:27

If you have kids then you know that they go everywhere and play with lots of things. I find lots of weird stuff everywhere from things they've learned on social media and messing about.

I often wrap my presents in my bedroom and stick cello tape to door frames. If I'd seen cellotape stuck to the inside of a door that's what I would think.

If it is suck to the inside it wouldn't say anything about coming in or out. Or do you think that he stuck a hidden camera there? But surely there are better places to put it?

If my partner questioned me about cellotape I would think he was weird and mad tbh
