- strong hints or blatant talk of banking/finance occupation (uses it to wow/shag women)

Banking or finance is the single most used occupation on the fake profiles so i always dismiss immediately (probably limiting as I live in a city full of finance workers lol)

singlemum81 · 16/05/2020 11:21

Interestingly, though don’t you find that some people, even though they don’t immediately capture you with their pic, if they do send you a decent message your attitude changes?

I'm with you on this one

OP posts:
GinWithRosie · 16/05/2020 11:23

Oh I don’t know @midnightstar66. I think the Engineers could give the bankers a run for their money (no pun intended!) Especially the ‘humble, god fearing’ ones who are widowed and looking for a ‘humble, god fearing woman to marry’. Lots of engineers like this...usually with very obviously fake photos (catalogue men in tropical idylls!)

Maybe these are more often in my age bracket though, hence the ‘widowed’ addition to their spammy profile. I have developed a SpamDar of bio info and phrases now 🤦‍♀️

singlemum81 · 16/05/2020 11:28

Then there's the 'businessman' job title 😂

OP posts:
PrawnSacrifice · 16/05/2020 11:32

For those that do work in finance, who might now fear being viewed as a fake profile, what would you suggest they put as their career, without them lying?

Shouldbedoing · 16/05/2020 11:53

I met my exH through OLD in 2003. Most of those no nos were true then. My personal distaste is for the word 'tactile'.

singlemum81 · 16/05/2020 11:55

Not sure if it's just me but I don't like too many kisses xxx in messages. Seems too familiar and sleazy straightaway

OP posts:
singlemum81 · 16/05/2020 11:57

I met my exH online in 2008. The red flags that I now know of would've floored me. What a tool!

If only I knew then what I know now 🙈

OP posts:
midnightstar66 · 16/05/2020 11:58

I'm not sure @PrawnSacrifice maybe a more specific job role rather than the sector might seem more genuine - as @Gin said though the pictures usually back up the fake profile. The engineers round here mostly seem real - lots of off shore workers about, maybe it's a geographical thing?

Lampan · 16/05/2020 12:12

I cannot believe only one person so far has mentioned ‘banter’! Urgh. That to me suggests they are incapable of serious conversation.
Other things (long list coming up, many of which have been mentioned already!)

Any reference to sarcasm or being sarcastic
Bed selfies
‘Own house and car’ - yeah me too. So what?
Night in nights out
‘Just ask’
A long list of what they don’t want
Negativity in general
Anything suggesting they have been cheated on in the past - I know a lot of people have but to put it in your profile suggests trust issues
Cats in pictures
Fancy cars - yawn
Bad sunglasses
Wearing sunglasses in all pictures
Cropped cargo trousers (just a personal dislike 😄)
Pouting
Filters
The ‘photoshoot’ - multiple photos with different outfits but same hair and background
Profiles where all photos are selfies - don’t you have friends or go anywhere where someone might take a photo of you?
Same face in every photo (usually these are all selfies too)
Their kids being in every photo
Dodgy looking mates in photos
‘Quirky’ nonsense in-jokes in bios
Profiles that have been using the same photos for years - I have been on and off OLD and still seeing the same photos that have been there since the start! Some photos are even date stamped with ‘2007’ etc
All this ‘INTJ’ or whatever letters describe personality types - I don’t know what they mean and am not interested in someone who would define themselves in this way
Yes to messy backgrounds in photos - like a clothes airer laden with pants etc. One guy even had his curtains hanging back-to-front at the windows
GIVING THE FINGER - an instant no no matter what the rest of the photos/profile are like
‘None of your business’ in job title
Things that play into typical ‘pathetic female’ stereotypes - like men claiming they are good at ‘removing spiders’ - yeah I’m not scared of spiders thanks
Someone who on Bumble claims the person who holds him most accountable is the ‘speed enforcement officer’ - oh so you’re a wanker driver who thinks the rules don’t apply to you? How unattractive
‘Looking for a little spoon’ 🤮🤮🤮
Photos showing them staring at their phone - suggests it’s a habit
References to pineapple on pizza
Anyone who has no bio or writes ‘blah blah blah’ or similar - a lack of effort is not attractive
Photos where they have manipulated the image and have strangely huge eyes or something

I could go on...

mummillion · 16/05/2020 12:14

Obvious filters like bunny ears and dog faces

Overuse of emojis

One word sentences

Sounding aggressive / angry

'Don't know what to write just ask '

Photos with baseball caps and sunglasses so you basically can't see anything

Lampan · 16/05/2020 12:17

Oh and I forgot to add:
Anything suggesting they think they are ‘above’ OLD like ‘new here just seeing what it’s all about’ etc

singlemum81 · 16/05/2020 12:18

@Lampan 100% agree with your list. You had me howling 😂

OP posts:
famousforwrongreason · 16/05/2020 12:22

@Lampan your list made me laugh.
Cargo trousers Envy not envy, puke, normally worn by guys with sunburn.
Honestly it feels like the over 40s section is rammed with undesirables.
I like the bad profiles though because at least they warn me up front and I can give them a giant swerve. Rather that than build up something with someone who has misrepresented themselves hugely.

famousforwrongreason · 16/05/2020 12:24

just seeing what it's all about oh yeah because you've been living under a rock since personal ads and then online dating were invented

Lampan · 16/05/2020 12:36

Pleased I gave you a laugh @singlemum81 and @famousforwrongreason! Most of my prompts came from my WhatsApp where I send screenshots of awful profiles to my friend 😂
And this is the under-40s I’m talking about! So I think it’s just universally awful (but fun too haha)

JoysOfString · 16/05/2020 12:42

Oh I actually like men’s pics with their pets, unless it’s a show-off dangerous dog, snake or tarantula etc. Man with a cat is a big plus! Also, I don’t like chunky gold jewellery but I’m fine with earrings. My weird celeb crush (well kind of celeb!) Anand Menon has lovely earrings

Roffling at the fish, drugged tiger etc pics. I wonder what percentage of women would actually be impressed?

Longshotinthedark · 16/05/2020 12:43

Filters, filters, filters!
Pulling tongues
Vague distant group photos

GinWithRosie · 16/05/2020 12:43

ANY message referring to my job in a sleazy way...this actually makes me feel ill!

“Hey Teach (actually the ‘Teach’ thing annoys me no end before we even start!)...they didn’t have teachers like you at my school 😜”. Really? No overweight teachers in their 50s then? Lucky guy 👍

“Hey teach, I’d happily do detention with you 😜”

“Mmmmmmmmmm you can put me over your knee and spank me anytime babe 😜”

“I bet you look great in glasses, suspenders and stockings Teach 😜” (actually no, I wouldn’t, my legs are like trunks and my very generous arse would eat the suspenders! Don’t be a twat!)

These are actual messages I’ve received this week 🤦‍♀️

singlemum81 · 16/05/2020 12:44

Has anyone noticed a few more NHS uniform selfies?

OP posts:
GinWithRosie · 16/05/2020 12:45

I’ve actually been pretty generous here, ⏫ and corrected the spellings and added punctuation! ✅

JoysOfString · 16/05/2020 12:45

Oh Rosie bleugh!

singlemum81 · 16/05/2020 12:47

@GinWithRosie Or anything that insinuates that the students would find us sexy 🤢 I've had so many idiots ask the name of the school. Like I'd disclose that sort info 🙄

OP posts:
GinWithRosie · 16/05/2020 12:50

Yeah it’s really grim! I teach Year 1 and they are still inappropriately sleazy 🤢

inmyshoos · 16/05/2020 12:50

@GinWithRosie that made me laugh.

Why are there so many funny women on here yet funny men online dating are few and far between??
