I thought rather than pick up my old thread here if you want to read it, it's a bit epic I would start a new one to reflect the fact that I now have a new life with my DDs and without my alcoholic STBXH.

Last Wednesday was an anniversary - a year since I found an empty booze bottle in the bedroom, a year since I hit my rock bottom, a year since I told him to deal with his drink problem or we were over - and I meant it.

It's all in the old thread - the failed rehab, more drinking, more lying, more rehab, the police incident that finally got him shipped out.

But here we are a year on, my DDs and I together. Our lives are immeasurably better in every way. OK, we have less money - but we also have peace, happiness, safety and a bright future together.

So to all those people stuck in relationships with addicted partners - you don't have to stay. You are entitled to a happy, safe life. You do have to put your children first. And when you find your rock bottom, that's enough - you don't have to wait for our OH to find theirs. You will feel guilty for finally looking after yourself and not your OH - counselling helps with that.

And one day you will have the life you deserve - it may be a life without the person you thought was forever, but it will be better. You can have what I have. Reply or don't reply - but whoever you are, one day I hope to see you on the other side.

I hope it all goes as well as it can lass.

Thinking of you today OP.
I hope you get some relief at work.
Maybe come up with a plan for when you get home tonight so it doesn't all hit you at once as soon as you walk back through the door?

pointythings · 03/09/2018 19:45

Being back at work was definitely the right decision - work isn't supposed to make you feel energised, but this definitely did. Even interacting with the funeral director via email over lunch was OK.

No new paperwork through the post so I even had a reprieve at home - cooked chilli and am vegging out on MN.

My mum isn't coming to the funeral. Huge sigh of relief that she agrees it's too much for her.

Funeral is all sorted and I have had the paperwork through for the letter of administration for H's bank accounts. Will sign and book oathtaking tomorrow and then that can go to the courts. Everything else is awaiting a final death certificate and consular notification documents, which are in work. And we got DD1 a dress because she had nothing not black - cost a bit but is stunning and will also go for 6th form evening do next year. Tonight my auntie arrives, it will be lovely to have her around.

It sounds like everything is in hand.

Aussiebean · 06/09/2018 09:43

Sending lots of love to you and your daughters.

I was 15 when we buried my dad. Although it was cancer not alcoholism. It is a horrible situation to be in at such an age but I think you are handling it brilliantly.

pointythings · 07/09/2018 20:04

It was beautiful. Honestly a beautiful ceremony and a real goodbye to the man he used to be - the man he always wanted to be. DDs said their own thing and I said mine, the vicar really got what we had said to her, the music worked and we had a lovely wake after her with all the people who were closest to us and him.
