Dating Thread 137 – Sausage Party at the SUC

Dating thread rules:

  1. The first rule about the dating thread is you don't talk about it with people you're dating.
  2. Develop a thick skin.
  3. Do not invest emotionally too soon.
  4. It's all BS until it actually happens.
  5. Trust your gut instinct.
  6. People vanishing, lying & being generally weird is not your fault.
  7. You are the prize - they should be trying to impress you.
  8. If it's not fun, stop.
  9. Loo update is mandatory.
10. Do unto others as you would have them do to you.

And a reminder - you don't know them until you know them!

wishy I think it only showed those who had specified lesbian, bisexual or sexually open minded. I looked at a few profiles. Now I see why men tell me I'm one of the more normal people there!

Go to the globe icon, then settings on top right and change men to women

TomHardysBitontheside · 18/07/2018 16:10

Think I may have blown it with Mr Academic. I asked him out on Friday. He finally replied (not quick at replying, we're talking usually 24 hours!) and said he was busy but would try to reschedule. I said don't worry, I get more free time midweek in summer. Then I felt my reply had been a bit curt and so I sent a second message saying sorry I'd been a bit harsh and I really didn't expect him to change his plans for me and I was sure we'd catch up soon.
All very nice really, but now I'm sorry I look a) like a stroppy cow and b) high maintenance. And I'm neither!! Mid divorce right now and therefore on a short fuse. I think I'm overreacting. He's lovely but very laid back. And I wonder if whilst he clearly likes me, maybe he's not that bothered yet.

cool good luck for later.

kin I'm glad last night went well.

Kinunir · 18/07/2018 16:18

I look a) like a stroppy cow and b) high maintenance.

All very nice really

As you came across as the latter Tom, you'll be fine, especially as he is a laid back guy :)

I'd be interested in getting a man's point of view (sorry, I am pondering various things yet again!)
I always imagine loads of lovely, amazing ladies (like us lot on this threadWink) and that it must be pretty easy for a decent guy but for us ladies there are just an awful lot of unsuitable men.
So men of the thread, make me feel better, tell me there are loads of weird women out thereGrin

cake I have figured this out. OLD is like a box of liquorice allsorts. I am quite fussy and only like those bobbly ones, I really dislike the rest. But there are some people who like all of them, some people who don't liek the bobbly ones. You see where I am going with this one?

Someone you might find as odd, someone else might think they are delightful. Someone you like, someone else might think there is something not quite right about. If everyone was nice and attractive to everyone else, life would be dull. Yep there are lots of wierdos about, yep there are people I wouldn't touch with a barge pole. But someone might. It is a numbers game. In reality in all your life, how many people have you met and thought "yeah, this one, has load of potential, I find them attractive,, they are a keeper"? Not many in the grand scheme of things, its the same in OLD.

I think the whole superficialness of OLD means you feel there may be a lot of potential suitors on looks alone, but when it comes down to it, there aren't that many. You just have to find the one that clicks. I have made some good friends and contacts through online dating, I haven't met one guy yet who I feel has potential as my future partner.

Sorry, I know you asked for a male persepctive, but horses for courses and all that (is that the saying??) and you need to kiss a lot of frogs (and have fun doing it).

covermelads yeah!! good to see you back :)

pudding21 · 18/07/2018 16:53

Tom Mr Academic probably won't bat an eyelid at what you said, and in my experience it shows a bit of vulnerability (just a tiny smidge, don't worry) and some men (who are worth anything) might find that a little bit endearing :P

TomHardysBitontheside · 18/07/2018 17:00

Thanks pud and kin that's sort of what I was thinking/hoping. Just needed a second opinion!

cake you made me laugh!! I don't think I'm weird!! pud is right though. You just have to keep trying till you find the right one. And you will. When I think of friends I've made at work, there's only a handful I really click with. Less than 5, I'd say out of about 150! Then I think that puts OLD into perspective a bit.

wishywashy6 · 18/07/2018 17:02

Right gin is poured... I didn't have anything to mix it with so I've gone with Ribena Confused....time to get ready for date number one!

Tom from what you've said I'd say you're overthinking it, he probably hasn't even thought anything of it!

Have a lovely evening everyone, I'll update later Smile

Cakecrumbs · 18/07/2018 17:08

Good luck wishy loving the gin with RibenaGrin

Has anyone encountered people that they know pop up on the swipe-y apps? I've got the problem that a few people I work with are now blocking my progress on Bumble. What's the etiquette here? It seems like whichever way you swipe there's the potential for things to get awkward.

On the topic of which apps/sites are best, badoo and okcupid are useless for me - badoo has no-one in my area, and I've run out of people on okcupid after a day. Bumble has dried up as well really. I'm yet to install Tinder, as it appears to be one of my last hopes, but I feel I need better pictures before I do.

ValMc1 · 18/07/2018 18:25

Cover - don't worry about turning 50 - embrace it. I'm 61 in a few weeks and it doesn't worry me at all. There are some real benefits - no children to worry about (although at the mo I'm with 2 of my grandchildren watching them trampoline) but I get to choose all the good bits with them, well and truly past meno so no hassle there, free prescriptions and if I upset someone I can blame it on dementia lol

ValMc1 · 18/07/2018 18:29

Kin fingers crossed for date 3

HalfDutchGirl · 18/07/2018 18:46

How come there is so much to catch up on!!!

Cover 50 is great - I've discovered a whole new lease of life - and I've been in my 50s a few years now!!

Val Like you I'm embracing it!!

Dan yes, I've seen a couple of people who I recognise but can't figure out where from (they're probably at the checkout of my local supermarket or something!). Personally I'd swipe no for any people I know, they won't know (sorry, lot of no/knows in that sentence!!).

Daffo and Wishy Enjoy your dates tonight, looking forward to hearing all about them. And Kin - date three - woooo sounds promising!

MeTigger Excellent news Grin

Love Wow congratulations on the job - go you! Good news on the car too, today is a good day!

Tom Don't overthink your messages to Mr Academic - sure you'll be fine

Mr Disappear has well and truly reappeared and has rung me, he's a tad 'odd' but I quite like 'odd'.

Daytime date with Mr T tomorrow - oooeer, he suggested a walk in the forest which we will do but I'm making sure we have coffee first so I can suss him out before I go walking anywhere with him!

VetOnCall · 18/07/2018 18:48

Cover! Good to see you again Smile

Tom tbh I think Mr Academic should be the one making more effort with you. He's very much 'when it suits him' isn't he? It's not stroppy or high maintenance to expect someone you're dating to show a bit of enthusiasm.

Well done on the interview Love

I spent most of last weekend with Mr DM. Seeing him again tomorrow evening and then again at the weekend. All going really well still, I think I'm definitely installed on the smitten bench for the moment!

Kinunir · 18/07/2018 18:51

Thanks Val, Half, I believe date three is something of a landmark and should be celebrated with the sharing of something. I'm undecided on whether to go with the flowers or the poem though - any suggestions?

OP posts:
HalfDutchGirl · 18/07/2018 18:59

Vet Glad to hear the smitten bench is being used!

Kin Flowers always win with me.

Questions, is it just me but do you find that women seem to spend a lot more time and effort with their pics etc than some of the men do??

Do you think it's just because they are for more of the opinion 'this is me take it or leave it' whereas we tend to worry endlessly about the right angle, clothes, smile etc etc. I've just had the weirdest video sent to me (yep video!) and it really isn't the best by any stretch of the imagination but he obviously thinks it is??? Hmmm ....

Lovemusic33 · 18/07/2018 19:20

So, after my good day I am now threading because Mr Campervan has not messaged me, I messaged him but nothing back. I’m hoping he’s just busy, trying not to phone watch, staying cooooool 😐😐😐 nothings going to ruin my day.
