In short: was married to a man for years despite knowing I was gay from young age. Marriage ended amicably several years ago, but there's been too much going on in recent years for me to consider dating. Have NCed as I've posted so much on here that would identify me!

I have never dated. My relationships have evolved from close friendships.

A woman I've met a couple of times (and really like) has asked if I'd like to discuss a shared interest (let's say "upholstery" for the sake of anonymity) over wine. I've said yes. I know she's gay. She knows I'm gay. We've fixed a date. But is it a date, or is it just talking and drinking?

If I wanted to talk about 'upholstery' with someone and didn't want it to be misconstrued, I'd always say coffee, not wine.

Really, really hoping it's a date...

Any advice on how to read the signs, o wise and lovely MNers?

Also de-lurking to say, firstly, best of luck OP! I've never been so excited about a complete stranger's... Er... Upholstery.

Secondly, another vote for Guardian Soulmates. Amongst my friends two straight marriages and one gay marriage has resulted from meeting there. But I bet you won't need it!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 08/09/2014 12:51

All these filthy MNers with their filthy, filthy handcrafts... Grin

Sarah Watters would indeed have a field day with quilling. Though maybe not with jazz hands. Don't do jazz hands op. Do upholstery hands - strong, capable, yet sensitive enough to appreciate a nice twilling.

My roman blind is complete. I'm spent.

IngridCold · 08/09/2014 14:37

Ooh definitely a date!

How exciting! Have a wonderful time among the loose covers!

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 08/09/2014 16:23

Good luck with your date, yes it's definitely a date!

MrsRuffdiamond · 08/09/2014 16:46

A woman I've met a couple of times (and really like) has asked if I'd like to discuss a shared interest

Can you remember after all this what your shared interest actually is, op? Grin

Hope you have a lovely time amidst the hessian and scrim Smile

If a colleague tells me on Monday she did a bit of felting over the weekend, there's a real danger I'll give her a slow wink. "And how was your (ahem) 'felting'?"

I have just spat gin all over the screen - I'm loving your double entendres!
Not reached the end of the thread yet, but good luck, I hope that it's everything you hope it is, and if it isn't, then believe me, your mucky mind and way with words will have 'em lining up for you, Nearly

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 08/09/2014 19:23

Have you been on your date yet nearly

Nearlyteatime · 08/09/2014 20:08

I love the frozen reference - but maybe not to someone with no kids! Grin

Crafters. You have been, without exception, utterly brilliant in your cheerleading and have made me laugh every day since my OP. I'm not going to be laying out every detail because, (cue 'For the first time in forever') something good just might be happening and I want to hold it close and not lay it all out. I hope you understand!

There was no discussion of 'upholstery' (as defined in the OP) or any actual "upholstery" (as defined by filthy-minded MNers Grin) beyond a very lovely parting hug. (The keen eyed among you will note the shift in punctuation there. This is like sodding Inception, with levels of upholstery within upholstery. God knows what would be. Oh, hang on, we know that, don't we. A little red sofa. See upthread).

There was no need for emergency jazz hands (which is a blessing) because the conversation flowed freely and frankly.

It's not a done deal and I am not taking anything for granted, but...

We are meeting again.
We are meeting again soon.
We are both very enthusiastic about that.
I have woken in the middle of the night and am too excited to go back to sleep.

I'd love to be able to drop in a classy lyric now: maybe a line of Sondheim, maybe something I heard Cerys play on 6music from an Appalachian funk ensemble. Something other than what's actually in my head. "Two am. Eyes open. Ticking clocks and falling rain." (First one to name that tune wins Cake and a trip in the Tardis).

Wine, my friends, appears to be a sign. Wine

Oh Nearly - that's sounds like the best kind of date you could have had! I am so pleased for you. I am new to this thread but it been a thing of joy (& great amusement!) to read. Thank you for making me feel good (despite being awake half the night feeling ill) & giving me a happy ending - which is hopefully the start of a beautiful beginning for you!

Nearlyteatime · 09/09/2014 06:32

Sorry you're feeling unwell, toot. Hope you have a chance to catch up on sleep later and thanks for the lovely post. Smile

Awwwww only just read this but how lovely.

Nearlyteatime · 09/09/2014 07:25

Placeinthesun · 09/09/2014 11:03

Sooo pleased for you. What lovely update. Yay!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 09/09/2014 11:48

LOVE this. All of it. Excellent work op.

And even if this doesn't work out (and it will, I know it will) that's you on your way now. Your duck is broken. Your up is holstered.

And oh! The places you'll go
The sofas you'll squash
The throws you will throw....

So chuffed for you.

ninetynineonehundred · 09/09/2014 11:53

Just found this thread and you are all so rude! (fans herself in a shocked and prim manner)

But yay op. Am happy for you.
