No idea what to think

Simon forgot to answer your question regarding who benefits if he gives up his license.

I was mainly thinking of the people he could injure or kill and their families. Of course he could also injure or kill himself, or have to live with the consequences of having done severe damage to/killed someone else.

I also think it is of benefit for him to contemplate the idea that 'oh, I drove after drinking' isn't just a throwaway excuse, it is something that should have consequences and that he needs to think about and take action to avoid repeating.

I am sorry but if you need to drive for a living etc then it is on you to be a safe driver, not on the general public to accept unnecessary risk to accommodate your irresponsibility.

I think we should let the OP take back control of this thread as she needs it for support for many issues, not just this one.
